Barber, 29, allegedly robbed commuter of phone, cash worth N118, 000

Ikeja, March 16, 2018 (NAN) A 29-year-old barber, Babatunde Shittu, who allegedly assaulted a commuter and robbed him of his phone and cash valued at N118,000, is facing trial at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The accused was arraigned before the Magistrate, Mrs F.F. George, on a two-count charge of assault and stealing.
Shittu, who resides at Mushin area of Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty and was admitted to a bail of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
George said the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
According to the Prosecutor, Police Sgt. Godwin Awase, the accused committed the offences on March 5 at Ojota, Lagos.
He said that the accused stole the phone and N45, 000 belonging to the complainant, Mr Michael Awofisoye.
“The accused stole the complainant’s Infinix phone valued at N73,000 and a cash of N45,000, totalling N118,000.
“The accused had removed the money and the phone from his pocket while boarding a bus.
“The accused had disembarked from the bus and confronted the accused to produce his phone and money.
“The accused assaulted him by giving him a butt on the mouth and took to his heels.
“The complainant fell down and while still in pains managed to raise alarm, shouting `thief, thief’, ” he told the court.
“Passersby pursued the accused, apprehended him and recovered the stolen items.”
The offences contravened Sections 173 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that both sections stipulate three years imprisonment for offenders.
The case was adjourned until March 22 for mention. (NAN)
