Lagos, Aug. 25, 2017 (NAN) Mr Kunle Awobodu, National President, Building Collapse Preventive Guild (BCPG), on Friday said respect of professionals involved in construction for standard requirements would help in preventing collapse of buildings.

Awobodu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that BCPG was focused on ensuring that buildings under construction do not have structural defects.

He said that building collapse, most times, was caused by errors from the foundation stage and failure to observe the construction standards/ethics due to the desire to cut costs.

“Adherence to standard requirements to erect a building is the only way to prevent building collapse.

“It is a known fact that any building with structural defects will eventually collapse,” Awobodu said.

He said that flaws by professionals, in addition to poor oversight of government in the past had compounded the problem of building collapse in the country.

Awobodu restated the commitment of the guild to ensuring effective monitoring of building constructions in the states, to help combat the incidence of building collapse.

“Any forward looking person will know that those past mistakes need to be corrected.

“The guild is in collaboration with Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development in all states and all stakeholders in this regard,” he said.

According to him, building collapse is a sad experience, which obedience to construction standards, codes and laws would go a long way in preventing. NAN)
