Abuja, Aug. 8, 2017 (NAN) The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) on Tuesday in Abuja commended the Reproduction Copyright Society of Nigeria (REPRONIG) for initiating Copyright Licensing in Tertiary Institutions.

Malam Abudullahi Denja, the President of ANA gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Niger (NAN) on the sidelines of the inauguration of the National Working Group on Copyright Licensing in Tertiary Institution.

Denja said that when proper structures were put in place, it would compel institutions to pay for photocopying of materials and books of authors.

“This will be of benefit to authors and publishers; it will be possible for us to network with the vice chancellors of universities in order to collect money that have been expended in photocopying our books.

“I think some of these funds will get back to us. It is a way of opening up multiple streams of income for copyright owners in terms of literary works.

“Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) is already making wave in the music industry. It is collecting a lot of money for musicians through the playing of their works in radio stations, airport, hotels and public places.

“REPRONIG could also do same to encourage and motivate authors and publishers,’’ Denja said.

The ANA president maintained that licensing in tertiary institutions for photocopy of works of authors was a welcome development.

He reiterated that the authors and the literary industry would  benefit from the scheme.

NAN reports that the meeting of the National Working Group on Copyright Licensing in Tertiary Institutions was organised by REPRONIG with support from the Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigeria.

The objectives of the working group include imparting knowledge about the importance and working of reproduction rights organisation.

It is also to develop a practical and efficient system for the users to meet their obligations under collective management system.

Others are recommending appropriate strategies to ensure that tertiary authors and institutions maximise the benefit derivable from the system of collective management of rights.

The group will also consider the terms of a draft framework and tariffs for users.

This will go a long way to checkmate the reckless photocopy of authors’ works in tertiary institution across the country and put back money in the pockets of copyright owners. (NAN)
