    Lokoja, June 28, 2024 (NAN) Gov. Usman Ododo of Kogi says the choice of the state as a special agro-industrial processing zone by the Federal Government is a step in right direction.

    Ododo said this  when he hosted a delegation from the Africa Development Bank (AfDB) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security on  Friday in Lokoja.

    He explained that his administration was ready to meet all requirements for the establishment of a Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) in the state.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the project ,which is an initiative of the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the Kogi government, is expected to attract significant foreign and domestic private sector investment into the state.

    The Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone is expected to process maize, cassava, rice, palm oil, cashew, sugarcane and fish, in line with the commitment of Gov Ododo to transform Kogi into an agro-industrial hub.

    The governor said: “We have already allocated 254 hectares of land in Ukpake, AjaoKuta Local Government Area for the purpose of the special agro-industrial processing zone.

    “Our decision to establish the agro-industrial processing zone in Ukpake was due to its strategic location and proximity to essential resources such as water supply, electricity, gas, a railway line linking Kogi and a number of states and the proposed international cargo airport in Adogo ,which is a few kilometers from the proposed site of the agro-industrial facility.

    “We wish to assure you that Kogi  government will do everything possible to provide the enabling environment for the selection of the state for the phase II of the project and its eventual take off.

    “This is because it is  in line with my administration’s policy on industrialisation and the strong will to guarantee food security in the state through investment in agriculture.

    “We are also aware that such investment in agricultural value chain will increase productivity, provide access to market for farmers and provide job opportunities for the teeming population of the state.”

    Ododo commended the African Development Bank for the initiative, which he said would enhance job creation and guarantee food security in Kogi and Nigeria ,at large.

    In his remarks, Dr. Bashir Ibrahim-Gaya, who led the AfDB delegation, said the assessment tour was intended to verify the readiness of states to be selected in the phase II for the establishment of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone.

    Ibrahim-Gaya explained that the SAPZs were being implemented in 18 countries across Africa, including Nigeria.

    According to him, the phase I in Nigeria, covering seven states ,including the Federal Capital Territory, has commenced.

    “Our team is here in Kogi to assess the state’s readiness as a possible beneficiary in the phase II of the project, ” he said.

    In their separate remarks, the State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Asiwaju Ashiru Idris and Commissioner for Agriculture,Mr  Timothy Ojomah, assured of the political will by the state government to see to the realisation of the project in the state.

    Ojomah said the proposed agro-industrial processing facility would  be supported by adequate and reliable supply of raw materials and semi-processed agricultural produce from the state Agricultural Transformation Centres in Alape, Anyigba and Osara. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Lokoja, June 28, 2024 (NAN) The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted accreditation to 42 academic programmes run by the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) in Kogi.

    The FUL Vice Chancellor, Prof Olayemi Akinwumi, made this known while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja on Friday.

    Akinwumi said that the good news was conveyed to the university via a letter signed by the acting Director of Accreditation, Engr. Abraham Chundusu on behalf of the Acting NUC Executive Secretary, Mr Chris Maiyaki.

    The VC noted that accreditation was sequel to the October/November 2023 accreditation exercise which has now been released to the University.

    He thanked the NUC, a supervisory agency of the Federal Government, saddled with the statutory mandate of accrediting academic programmes in all Nigerian Universities, for the accreditation of the 42 programmes.

    “We are glad that all the 42 programmes assessed by NUC (most for the first time) in the last year’s exercise have been accredited.

    “This is because upon my assumption of office in 2021, I inherited most of these new programmes established by my predecessor which were not resource verified by NUC or recognized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

    “I then took it upon myself to ensure that these programmes undergo resource verification by the supervisory bodies as the first step and prerequisite before presenting them also for subsequent accreditation as government is a continuum.

    “This was in spite of the daunting challenges of sourcing for the huge financial resources needed to ensure a smooth and successful resource verification of such a large number of new programmes inherited.

    “Indeed, this is a milestone received with great joy by members of the University community, particularly the 400L students whose hope and chances of graduating this year and mobilized for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme were uncertain before now, ” he said.

    He said that the university had earlier secured the re-accreditation of the existing programmes in the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, while the administration, in line with its five-year vision plan, went ahead to also establish new programmes including Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory, Engineering, Law, Agriculture, Educational Management and Planning, among others.

    Akinwumi  expressed profound appreciation to the NUC, members of Senate, Staff and Students of the University for their cooperation and tireless efforts that led to thw remarkable achievement.

    He gave the list of the newly accredited programmes which cut across different Departments and Faculties to include: administration, accounting, banking and finance, business administration and public administration.

    Others are arts, arabic, archaeology, christian religious studies, islamic religious studies, linguistics, music, philosophy, theatre arts, communication and media studies.

    Others are mass communication, computing, computer science, business education, education Biology, . Education Chemistry, Education Computer,  Education Economics, Education English Language, Education Geography and  Education History.

    He said the others are  Education Mathematics, Education Physics. Education Political Science. Guidance and Counseling, Integrated Science, Library and Information Science. Social Studies, Science, Biochemistry, Biology and  Biotechnolog.

    Others are Botany, Chemistry, Geolog, Industrial Chemistry, Mathematics, Microbiology. Physics,   Statistics, Zoology, Social Science and. Sociology. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • NUC accredits 5 more courses at Salem University Lokoja

    Lokoja, June 28, 2024 (NAN) The National Universities Commission (NUC), has accreditated five additional academic programmes at Salem University Lokoja, Kogi.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Alewo Johnson-Akubo, made the disclosure while speaking with newsmen in Lokoja on Friday.

    He said the approval was conveyed to the institution via a letter dated June 6, and signed by the Acting Director, Accreditation, Abraham Chindusu on behalf of the NUC Acting Executive Secretary, Mr Chris Maiyaki.

    Johnson-Akubo said the development was sequel to the NUC’s earlier accreditation of seven other programmes being run by the university in 2022.

    The vice-chancellor listed the courses to include BSc Computer Science; BSc Information Technology, BSc Geology, BSc Microbiology, BSc Biochemistry, and MSc/MBA Business Administration.

    While the five recently accredited courses in the University’s College of Education, include Business Education, Education Computer Science, Education English, Educational Management and Social Studies.

    He said: “Only last year we got the NUC’s approval to run PhD programmes for the teaming Nigerian citizens and foreigners alike to boost education globally.

    “This accreditation is a cheering news to us as a university, which is out to train the youths to become global leaders and change agents that will bring about the needed growth and development in nations across the globe.

    “Today, virtually all the courses being run by Salem University Lokoja are fully accredited, notwithstanding the rush for our courses by candidates desiring to study with us.

    “Again, with the kind of infrastructural development we have in place in Salem University, we have what it takes to admit more students into our various departments”.

    Johnson-Akubo expressed gratitude to God and the Chancellor, Archbishop Sam Amaga, for making it possible for all the university programmes in the seven colleges to be fully accredited. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Kogi APC chieftain says leaders should be prayed for, not cursed

    Lokoja, June 27, 2024 (NAN) A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi, Mr  Nathaniel Taiwo, says leaders should be prayed for, and not cursed, by the people they lead.

    The APC stalwart, who gave the advice while speaking with newsmen in Lokoja on Thursday, said that leaders were God’s chosen, deserving support and cooperation of their subjects to succeed.

    Taiwo, a former member of the Kogi House of Assembly, was reacting to the recent verbal attacks on Sen. Sunday Karemi of Kogi West Senatorial District, by some individuals in the state.

    “I think constructive criticisms of leaders is not bad, but to attack and curse them is not right nor the best for us as a state or country.

    “Rather than cursing, we should offer prayers for them to lead us well and succeed as leaders chosen by God over us for the desired growth and development,” he said.

    The former legislator, also a former Chairman of Kabba/Bunu Local Government, lauded the efforts of Karemi that ensured the award of a contract for the reconstruction of Kabba-Egbe-Ilorin Palliative Road.

    “Our President, Bola Tinubu, Governors, Legislators, Council chairmen, traditional rulers, religious and community leaders deserve our prayers to lead us well,” he said.

    According to him, for over a decade, the federal road was in a bad shape until the reconstruction that brought relief to motorists and travellers.

    He also praised Gov. Usman Ododo’s administration for the laudable achievements recorded “in so short a time”.

    “The calmness and peace being enjoyed in Kogi is due to the security architecture brought to bear by Ododo’s administration.

    “The timely rescue of the abducted students of Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), by security agencies operating in the state, is worth commending  by all and sundry.

    “This administration is also doing well in the area of education, health and agriculture in consolidation of what ex-gov. Yahaya Bello’s did to the people of Kogi,” he said.

    He was full of praises for Bello who established the Kogi State University (KSU), Kabba which, he said, had given room for youths in the district to gain admission into tertiary school. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Psychiatrist wants drastic measures to curb illicit drugs

    Lokoja, June 26, 2024 (NAN) Dr Collins Egbeola, Consultant Psychiatrist, Federal University, Lokoja Teaching Hospital, has advised parents and government to take drastic measures against illicit drug abuse and trafficking to save Nigerian youths.

    Egbeola gave the advice on Wednesday in Lokoja in a paper he presented at the celebration of this year’s Day Against Substance Use.

    The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN), reports that the celebration was organised by the NDLEA, Kogi Command, in  onjunction with the state government,

    In the paper titled: “Prevention of substance use disorders: An approach in perspective”, Egbeola emphasised the need to promote healthy living, delay initiation into drug use, prevent development of a disorder and delay of relapse.

    He said that the dearth of trained manpower, brain drain syndrome, funding challenge, lack of political will to control access to legal substances due to economic interests, were some of the challenges to drug control in Nigeria.

    “Some drug-related realities include adverse effect of substance abuse on individuals, family and society.

    “Traditional approach to fighting drug abuse involves supply interruption – reducing opportunity for use – and demand reduction via awareness campaigns.

    He said that prevention was cost-effective and could not be compared to the disease burden.

    “Prevention should go beyond primary prevention; there is the need for interventions through the whole spectrum.

    “Prevention reduces burden of the problem. Government must change theory to focus on individual factors like the risk associated with drugs.

    “There is the need to enlist buy-in of all stakeholders like politicians, families, communities, dispensers and prescribers,” he said.

    In her remarks, Hajiya Safinat Ododo, wife of Gov. Usman Ododo, represented by the wife of the deputy Governor, Mrs Margaret Oyibo, pledged government’s support to NDLEA in the fight against illicit drugs abuse/trafficking in Kogi.

    Safinat called on parents and guardians to watch over their wards to ensure that they did not engage in illicit drugs consumption.

    “The youths are the hope of the survival of the country; they must be given good counseling to be responsible and hardworking so as to pilot the affairs of the country in the near future,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Lokoja, June 24, 2024 (NAN) The Kogi Government on Wednesday,  urged stakeholders and government at all levels to invest massively in prevention and treatment programmes to stem the tide of drug abuse in the country.

    The Youths and Sports Commissioner, Mr Monday Anyebe, made the call during the celebration of the World Drug Day held at the Government House, Lokoja.

    Anyebe, who spoke on the world drug Day theme:  “The evidence is clear, invest in prevention,” said the state government was ready to carry serious preventive measures to save the residents from destruction.

    “As we commemorate the world drug day, the message is the same; which is laying emphasis on the need for us to begin to invest in prevention, rather than cure and rehabilitation.

    “Our theme resonates deeply. We have seen firsthand,  the impact of drug abuse on our communities.

    “Unfortunately, we have lost talented young people, seen families torn apart, and witnessed the devastating consequences of addiction.

    “But we can also witness the power of prevention which can lead to  transformation of young lives, ignite hope in their eyes, and revive the resilience of their spirits.

    “In Kogi today, we have a Sheriff in Gov. Usman Ododo, who believes in the well-being of every resident and who is committed to prioritising
    prevention and ensuring that our youths have access to  resources required to thrive, ” he said.

    The commissioner said the government, through the ministry of youth and sports, and in collaboration with relevant stockholders, would continue with the advocacy, “to ensure that our people are adequately sensitised about the dangers of drug abuse.”

    In his remarks, the  National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Commander in  Kogi,  Mr Umar Yahuza, said there was need for urgent steps to be taken for all and sundry to safeguard teaming youths from illicit drugs destructive tendencies.

    Yahuza noted that the implication of drugs on security, economic and  general wellbeing was severe and worrisome to the society.

    “Statistics have indicated clearly that drug problem is mutating into a colossal social dimension and has become an issue linked beyond doubt the escalation of insecurity and its attendant effects on peace and economy across the country.

    “The command has discovered and destroyed cannabis farms in Igalamela-Odolu, Ofu, Omala, Idah, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Areas of the state.

    “Assets of drug dealers are also being seized as a way of crippling them of their illegal wealth and have been tendered in court for forfeiture, ” he said.

    The commander urged traditional institutions, Religious and opinion Leaders, NGOs etc to give a helping hand to ensure  drug free Kogi and Nigeria as a whole. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Lokoja, June 26, 2024 ( NAN) The wife of Kogi Governor,  Hajiya Safinat Ododo, is to has build a rehabilitation centre for drug addicts in the state

    Ms Eunice Achimugu, Special Adviser (SA) to the Governor on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, made this known while addressing newsmen in Lokoja on Wednesday.

    Achimugu said that the governor’s wife also promised to build a skill acquisition centre, where youths, including drugs addicts under rehabilitation, could be trained for various skills to be useful to the society.

    She explained that the measures taken were part of the state government collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kogi Command to fight illicit drug abuse and trafficking in the state.

    “It’ll be wrong if we just sit and watch our youths being destroyed by illicit drugs. The youths are the leaders of tomorrow and must be protected.

    “Drastic measures have to be taken to save our youths, who are ignorant of the Inherent danger in those illicit drugs, ” she said.

    The SA said that part of the plan in waging was against drug abuse, was just showing video clips but visiting schools to sensitise the pupils/students against the danger of Illicit drugs.

    According to her, this government would keep the collaboration with NDLEA to fight the menace and rescue the youths from destruction.

    Lokoja, June 25, 2024 (NAN) Kogi State Government on Tuesday tasked youths on accountability, transparency in all their dealings, so as to be responsible future leaders of the country.

    The Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Monday Anyebe, gave the charge while declaring open, a two-day Youth Social Accountability Lab Training for Young Changemakers in Lokoja.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training was organised by Youth Development and Empowerment Initiative (LYDEI).

    NAN also reports that LYDEI is under the auspices of the Youth Upright Accountability Project (YUA-P), with support from LEAP Africa and Nigeria Youth Futures Fund.

    Anyebe said that the state government was committed to fostering a culture of accountability, transparency, and civic engagement among the youths.

    “As youths, accountability and transparency are so fundamental to your socio-political engagement, in all facets of life and the society.

    “Gov. Usman Ododo’s administration has taken due recognition of the fact that development of the state remained intrinsically linked to the engagement and empowerment of the young people.

    “It is based on this that the youth ministry is actively seeking to cultivate a vibrant youth sector in Kogi, and promote collaboration among youth organisations, foster collective action and building a network of young changemakers across the state.

    “That is why we are delighted to support the Youth Upright Accountability Project (YUA-P), being implemented by the Youth Development and Empowerment Initiative (LYDEI),” he said.

    Anyebe explained that the training was a crucial step at ensuring that the youths were not just passive beneficiaries of government programmes but active participants in shaping policies and holding leaders accountable.

    In his remarks, Asema Haruna, member representing Adavi Constituency at the State House of Assembly, commended organisers of the training and urged the youths to be committed to doing things right.

    Haruna urged the youths to always critically plan towards attaining meaningful positions, to enable them lead.

    According to him, the State Assembly will always give priority to issues that concern youths, their lives and ambitions.

    Earlier in his welcome address, the Executive Director, LYDEI, Mr Aminu Okwutepa, said that the Youth Social Accountability Lab Training for Young Changemakers was a call for action and a beacon of hope.

    Okwutepa said that the training was designed to equip the young changemakers with the skills and knowledge needed for active participation in governance processes.

    He said that it was important to cultivate a culture of accountability and transparency among the youths, as these were essential for fostering ethical governance.

    Dr Funmilayo Oyefusi, a Consultant and Lead Facilitator for the training, said that the training would build the capacity of the youths to know how to be socially accountable and hold leaders to account.

    Oyefusi urged the youths to set manageable goals for themselves and as innovative leaders, improve on themselves, be willing to adapt to changes, not to be scared of failure and be persistent.

    “The training is about how youths can be strategic leaders in their own right, how they need to lead themselves first before leading others.

    “How they can make others to be accountable; and also how to become an innovative leader,” he said.

    In his goodwill message, Seidu Ademu, Chairman of Kogi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), said that LYDEI shared common mandate with the Union in holding leaders accountable.

    Ademu, therefore, urged the youths to, like the journalists, hold duty bearers accountable till the right things were done for the growth and development of the nation. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Kogi IGR hits N23.5bn — official

    Lokoja, June 25, 2024 (NAN) The Kogi State Internal Revenue Service says the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) profile has risen from N6 billion in 2016 to N23.5  billion per annum.

    Alhaji Sule Enehe, the chairman of the service, announced this in a stakeholders interactive session held in Lokoja on Tuesday.

    Enehe explained that when he came on board as chairman in 2016, the revenue of the state was just about N6 billion per annum.

    “But today, within eight years, the revenue profile has leaped to N 23. 5 billion annually helping the state government at providing the desired social amenities to the people.

    “the service had in the last eights years transitioned to digital systems for efficient tax processes with a tax guide to simplify tax payments.

    “This tax guide can enable tax players to make payments in the comfort of their homes.

    “These feats are attributed to the collective efforts and contributions of every stakeholder involved, highlighting the importance of teamwork and community support in achieving financial growth,” he said.

    The chairman said that the state government “is judiciously utilising the  monies being generated from tax in touching the lives of residents in the state.

    “It is obvious the government has provided infrastructure in area of Health, Agriculture, education and Road projects”.

    Enehe said that the stakeholders interactive meeting was aimed at collecting feedback from businesses regarding challenges being faced, with the goal of conveying the information to the state government.

    The chairman further said that the meeting was also intended to help in the design of policies that would foster a more business-friendly environment, showcase how state funds are utilised.

    Dr Olubunmi Ajayi, Director, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and Other Revenues, urged tax payers not to pay cash to revenue officials.

    “Your not paying cash to tax officials will greatly help in eradicating all forms of illegality within the system.

    “Our taxpayers remain our valued assets in generating the necessary funds for social and economic development of the state, as they perform their civic responsibility in paying their tax obligations,” he said.

    Lokoja, June 24, 2024 (NAN) The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 149 suspects with over 1.49 tonnes of illicit drugs between Jan. 1 and June 24 in Kogi.

    The Kogi NDLEA Commander, Umar Yahuza, made the disclosure on Monday, in Lokoja at a news conference heralding a week long United Nations Day against drug Abuse and trafficking in the state.

    Yahuza, who said that programme was organised by the agency in collaboration with Kogi Government, said 29 out of the 149 suspects arrested had been convicted, while cases against others were still pending at Federal High Court, Lokoja.

    “The drug menace in Kogi and Nigeria is so disturbing and demands urgent action to arrest it before it destroys our youths and future leaders.

    “This is because the ugly situation has serious implications on security, economics and the general wellbeing of the citizens.

    “We have made a series of arrests and seizures of assorted drugs such as codeine, Methamphetamine, Diazepam, tramadol, Cannabis sativa, Pentazocine among others.

    “In fact, statistics and empirical facts from the agency’s operations indicated clearly that the drug problem is mutating into a colossal social problem.

    “It has become an issue linked beyond doubt to the escalation of insecurity and its attendant effects on peace and economy across the country, ” he said.

    The commander attributed the effects of armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, rape and other violent crimes against humanity in the country to the use of illicit drugs.

    He said that illicit drugs were mostly the catalyst for these vices, adding “anywhere there is drug, there is crime and vice versa.”

    According to him, Kogi, being a microcosm of Nigeria, and a federating unit, cannot stand alone in the face of this ominous threat of drug abuse and trafficking.

    Yahuza further said that from Jan. 1 to date, the command had engaged in various operations, sensitisation, courtesy/advocacy visits in an effort to curtail the menace.

    He, however, called on government, corporate organisations and spirited individuals to collaborate with NDLEA to eradicate the menace of drugs in the society.

    The commander commended Gov. Usman Ododo’s administration for the enormous support offered to the agency in its discharge of duties in the state.

    Also speaking, the commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Monday Anyebe, commended NDLEA for its resilience in the fight against illicit drugs within the Kogi and the country at large.

    The commissioner said that Ododo had genuine interest in the wellbeing of Kogi youths and desired that the youth and the entire populace to be sensitised on the harmful effects of this killer habit, believed to be primarily practiced by the younger generations.

    “It’s evidently clear that investing in prevention is the most effective way to address drug abuse and addictions in society .
