  • Nigerian pilgrim returns lost $800, other currencies in Makkah

    Pilgrim

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

Makkah (Saudi Arabia), June 19, 2024 (NAN) Malam Abba Limawa, 52, a Nigerian pilgrim from Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has returned 10,500 Russian rubles, 800 dollars and 690 Saudi Riyals, he found, to the authority in Makkah.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Limawa, handed over the different currencies to the Executive Chairman, National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Malam Jalal Arabi during the post-Afarat conference, held on Wednesday in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

The pilgrims explained that he found the money inside a waist bag, while on his way to pray at the Masjid Haram (Mosque).

” Initially, I wanted to ignore the waist bag and moved to the Mosque, but on a second thought, I said it might belong to a Nigerian, especially some of our old women.

“So, I decided to pick it, and I proceeded to the mosque. When I returned to my accommodation, I opened the bag and discovered that there is no Nigerian currency and no any sign that it belonged to a Nigerian.

” Immediately, I approached one of the officials of the Jigawa State Pilgrims Welfare Boards, narrated the story and presented the money to him.

” From there, he commended me for showing an exemplary character and honesty and told me that he will handover the money to the NAHCON, to ensure that the owner gets his or her money,” he said.

Responding, Arabi commended Limawa for being honest and projecting the image of Nigeria positively at the international arena.

Earlier, in his presentation on the outcome of the just concluded Hajj ritual, the NAHCON boss explained that the aim of the post-Afarat conference was to review what had transpired.

“This will enable us to have a sincere post-mortem of what we did at the battle field and improve on the success recorded.”

Arabi disclosed that Saudi government had released the time-table and timeline for the 2025 Hajj operation on Tuesday.

” Perhaps by Thursday we will have known what they allocate (Hajj slots allocation) to each nation of the world, how the visas will commence.

” But interestingly for the first time, they (Saudi authority) have opened the e-portal as from Tuesday.”

He, therefore, called on the States Pilgrims Welfare Boards, Tour Operators and all other stakeholders to take notes of the development.

Also, the Head of Aviation of NAHCON, Malam Goni Sanda, said that three flights carrying pilgrims from Kebbi, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will take off to Nigeria on June 22. (NAN)

  • Shettima reaffirms FG’s commitment to north east’s economic revival

    Development

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

Abuja, June 19, 2024 (NAN) Vice-President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to driving economic revival and development in the North East region of the country.

Shettima stated this while laying the foundation for the new headquarters building of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in Maiduguri.

A statement on the ceremony was made available to newsmen on Wednesday by Mr Stanley Nkwocha, the spokesperson of the Vice-President.

The Vice-President, in the statement, stressed that the only way to reclaim and shape the narrative of the North-East region was to bring everyone together.

According to him, the event was a demonstration of President Bola Tinubu’s promise, an assurance of his commitment, and a reminder of the importance of the region to the nation.

Shettima noted that it was a deep honour for him to be present to witness the commencement of a legacy of service that would outlast all those in attendance.

” NEDC is a product of the people, and it shall serve the interests of the nation. It is this foundational principle that guides the NEDC.

” This institution, therefore, embodies our collective resolve to transform the narrative of this region—from one marred by despair and devastation to one defined by renewal and triumph.

“Today is a demonstration of our promise, an assurance of our commitment, and a reminder of what this sub-region means to the nation,” he said.

He explained that the foundation-laying ceremony was a step towards fulfilling President Tinubu’s promise to prioritise initiatives that safeguard the interests of the North East region.

“This promise is not merely a political commitment but a moral obligation to the people who have endured so much and deserve nothing less than a future defined by peace, stability, and prosperity.”

Shettima stressed that the new head office surpasses mere infrastructure, embodying the strength of the nation’s collective will to rebuild, restore, and overcome the challenges that have hindered the region’s progress.

“This head office shall symbolise the strength of our shared aspirations as a people with shared objectives. As we lay this foundation, we do so with a vision of a North-East that is vibrant, resilient, and forward-looking.

“We do so imagining our contributions to building a nation where every child has access to quality education; healthcare is accessible to all; infrastructure supports thriving economies, and peace and security are the bedrock of daily life.”

The Vice-President also inspected progress on the first phase of construction on the 27km Jere Bowl Road Network in Mafa/Jere local government area, just as he also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the second phase of the project.

The projects, Shettima noted, reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to the development and prosperity of Borno State.

“This project symbolises our dedication to improving the lives of our people, enhancing security, and fostering economic growth.

” It is a testament to our unwavering resolve to build a Nigeria where every citizen, regardless of their location, has the opportunity to thrive.

” A robust road network accelerates the process of urbanization,” he said.

Shettima added: “As rural areas become more accessible, we will witness the development of new urban centers, leading to better access to education, healthcare, and other essential services.

“Each road we construct supports security, commerce, and agriculture. They enhance the standard of living for our people.

” Without a reliable network of roads, we cannot fulfil our promises to the people, nor can we sustain our democracy. The full participation of remote communities in our nation’s development depends on a dependable road network”.

The Vice-President further stated that the economic agenda of President Tinubu was rooted in supporting each state of the federation in achieving its objectives and fulfilling our promises to the nation.

“Borno State holds a pivotal role in our nation’s economy and will always remain a top priority in our efforts to stabilise and promote unity and peace across the nation,” he added

Earlier, Gov. Muhammad Inuwa of Gombe, who is also the Chairman of the Northern States Governors Forum, praised the Vice President for mobilising support for the smooth operations of the NEDC.

“We are very proud of what you are doing as our leader in the North East by ensuring the smooth take-off of this project as well as enhancing the operations of the NEDC,” Governor Yahaya stated.

He called on Governors and other stakeholders from the North East states to work towards achieving the goals of the NEDC.

He, however, lamented the devastating effect of the Boko Haram insurgency, which he said took the North East zone 50 years backwards.

“We therefore need to work hard to recover the lost grounds, and with Vice President Shettima’s motivation and support, we can achieve that,” he added.

The Deputy Governor of Borno, Usman Kadafur, applauded the good work so far done by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) in the six states of the region.

“The effort of the NEDC is adjudged a quite successful story and it is the pride of the various state governments across the North East region,” he said

The Chairman, Governing Board of NEDC, retired Maj.-Gen. Paul Tarfa, said the laying of the foundation for the construction of a befitting headquarters has opened a new chapter in the history of the commission and symbolizes growth.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the commission, Mohammed Alkali said the event was a milestone in the history of NEDC and the entire North East region.

He noted that the master plan for the North East is in tandem with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu.

He further sought for cooperation and synergy among stakeholders in order to realise its objectives. (NAN)

  • Nusuk card didn’t stop illegal migrants from accessing Hajj camp- NAHCON

    Card

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

Mina (Saudi Arabia), June 19, 2024 (NAN) The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) says the Nusuk card introduced by Saudi authorities to prevent illegal migrants from gaining access to pilgrims’ tents at the sites of hajj rituals didn’t achieve its essence totally.

Dr Aliyu Tanko, the Chairman, Committee on Movement of Pilgrims, said this in an interview with newsmen on Tuesday at Mina in Makkah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nusuk card is a crucial document introduced by Saudi authorities for identification of pilgrims to enable them again access to sites of hajj rituals.

The introduction of the card became necessary due to the increased incidence of fake pilgrims and illegal migrants during the core hajj rites period in the past.

Tanko said, “Unfortunately, even before the arrival of Nigerian pilgrims at the ritual sites, illegal migrants have already gained access to the area.

” To be frank with you, even before we left Makkah to Mina with our pilgrims, illegal migrants have gained access to the area, in spite of the introduction of the NUSUK card for easy identification of real pilgrims.

” And that has clearly shown that the NUSUK card introduced by the Saudi authority to prevent illegal people from gaining access to tents in Mina, Arafat and Muzzalifah has failed.

” Therefore, the essence of the card has not been achieved, even though it has worked to some extent but the objective of stopping fake pilgrims and illegal migrants has not been totally achieved.”

Tanko, however, said that with the support of the Saudi authorities, the commission was able to overcome most of the challenges anticipated during the hajj.

He said, ” To Allah be the glory, we have come to the end of the 2024 Hajj rites in Mina and the pilgrims have returned to Makkah, which signaled the conclusion of the exercise.

” The 2024 Hajj came with a lot of things and we have overcome all the challenges we anticipated.

” Therefore, we have recorded tremendous successes.”

NAN reports the NAHCON officials on Monday intercepted two illegal migrants of Nigerian descent, Muhammed Umar and Nazifi Tasi’u GARBA,. over infiltration of the pilgrims’ tents amidst concerns regarding overstretched accommodation and petty theft.

Consequently, the suspects were handed over to the Saudi Police, where their biometrics were obtained and a fine of 10,000 Saudi Riyals was imposed on each of them to be paid whenever they were leaving the country. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • 2024 Hajj: Egyptian President commends Saudi’s excellent management

    Hajj

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

Makkah (Saudi Arabia), June 16, 2024 (NAN) President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt has commended Saudi authorities for the excellent organisation of the ongoing 2024 Hajj rite.

El-Sisi, who is one of the pilgrims that performed the exercise, gave the commendation on his verified official social media account, on Sunday.

He also applauded the services provided to millions of pilgrims, catering to all their needs, security and safety.

“I extend my sincere thanks to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques – King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince – for the warm welcome in Saudi Arabia on the occasion of performing this year’s Hajj.”

A Nigerian pilgrim from Sokoto, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, 33, also commended Saudi Arabia for effective crowds control.

“Imagine a gathering of over 1.5 million people from around the world; the authority in Saudi was able to manage the movement of people peacefully, from one point to another.”

On the lesson he learned as a pilgrim, Abubakar said Hajj symbolises the equality of all Muslims, regardless of their personality and irrespective of their status.

“Just take a second look at this tent where we are, you will see high profile personalities that ordinarily in Nigeria, I can’t even think of going close to them.

“But here we are, sharing almost the same mattress and pillows without any social segregation or discrimination. This has truly affirmed that a Muslim is a brother of his fellow Muslim.

“May Allah continue to guide our leaders in Nigeria and give them the ability to deliver on their campaign promises.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that crowds of pilgrims are moving on foot to the stoning areas.

Some were seen pushing disabled pilgrims on wheelchairs on a multi-lane road leading to the complex housing the large pillars.
