    Badagry NBA chairman promises to tackle association’s challenges

    Badagry (Lagos State), June 28, 2024 (NAN) Mr Latif Rasheed, the newly inaugurated chairman, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Badagry branch, Lagos State, on Friday promised to tackle challenges confronting his members in the town.
    Rasheed made the promise during the inauguration of new executive members of the association in Badagry.
    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that all the new members of the association were returned unopposed.
    The chairman said that he was aware of the enormous challenges ahead of the association.
    “But let me reiterate that in the next two years, we intend to pursue and achieve some challenges.
    “This includes creation of Ojo Magistrate District, ensuring the deployment of another judge to Badagry judicial division.
    “Improvement on the efficient performance of the Probate Registry that has just commenced operation.
    “Commencement of the appeal section, creation of the office of the Deputy Sheriff and procurement of land for the NBA Badagry Branch Bar centre,” Rasheed said.
    He also promised continuous legal education for members of the Heritage Bar, functional convenience for lawyers and liaising with NBA National Executive for quick processing of stamp and seal for members.
    Rasheed urged the new executive committee under his leadership for absolute cooperation to achieve the challenges.
    The chairman thanked the outgoing members of the association for a smooth transition.
    Earlier, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Mr Lateef  Arigbabuwo, congratulated all the elected members of the executive committee of the NBA branch.
    He urged them to lead actively from the front so as to continue to build and reinforce a culture of excellence in the  branch.

    Badagry (Lagos State), June 28, 2024 (NAN) A Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, on Friday, ordered the remand of a 25-year-old man, Rasheed Adisa, in a correctional centre, after pleading guilty to stealing.
    Adisa pleaded guilty to stealing motor spare parts worth N600,000.
    The Chief Magistrate, Mr A J. Aina, ordered that the defendant be remanded in Awhajigoh Correctional Centre, Badagry, and  adjourned the case until Sept.16, for facts and sentencing.
    The prosecutor, Clement Okuoimose, earlier told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 14, at about 5.00.p.m, at Mechanic workshop, No 111, Aka Road, Okokomaiko, Lagos.
     He said that defendant stole vehicle spare parts valued at N600,000, property of one Mustapha Taiwo, the complainant.
    Okuoimose said that the offence violated Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. (NAN)

  • Man docked for allegedly stealing N955,000

    Badagry (Lagos State), June 28, 2024 (NAN) The Police, on Friday arraigned a 19-year-old man, Qudus Balogun, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly stealing N955,000.
    The defendant, whose residential address was not provided, was charged with stealing punishable under section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.
    The prosecutor, ASP. Clément Okuoimose told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 5, at about 11.39.p.m, at Badagry Roundabout, Lagos.
    He alleged that the defendant obtained the sum of N955,000 from one Mrs Wuraola Alfred, to give one Iya Gift at Owode-Apa, but ran away with the money.
    “The defendant was later caught two weeks later after spending the money at the same Badagry Roundabout.
    “The offence, contravened sections 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015,” he said
    The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
    The Chief Magistrate, Mr A. J. Aina granted the defendant a bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.
    He ordered that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.
    Aina adjourned the case until Aug.19, for mention. (NAN)

  • Man, 49, docked for alleged N1.1m fraud

    Badagry (Lagos State), June 27, 2024 (NAN) A 49-year-old man, Ibrahim Yakubu, on Thursday appeared before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly obtaining the sum of N1,150,000 under false pretences.

    The defendant, whose residential address was not provided, is standing trial on a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.

    The prosecutor, ASP. Clement Okuoimose, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences on Dec.6, 2022, at about 3.90.p.m., at No 98 Timmy Jas Ajara Agelaso area of Badagry, Lagos.

    Okuoimose alleged that the defendant obtained the sum of N1,150,000 from the complainant, Mr Pam John, under the guise of wanting to help him purchase a Toyota Corolla car, which he never did.

    The prosecutor told the court that the defendant instead converted the sum to his personal use.

    The offences, according to him, contravene sections 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr A. J Aina, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Aina said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and must show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions.

  • Man, 21, docked for allegedly stealing compressors

    Badagry (Lagos State), June 27, 2024 (NAN) A 21-year-old man, Wasiu Ojulari, was on Thursday arraigned before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing refrigerator and air-conditioning compressors.
    The defendant, whose address was unknown, is standing trial on a two-count charge of stealing and unlawful entry.
    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
    The Prosecutor, Insp Edet Ekpo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June 12 at about 1 a.m. at Green Arcade Hotel, Ojeomo Str., Imeke, Badagry, Lagos.
    Ekpe said that the defendant stole 11 pieces of Panasonic refrigerator compressors and 10 pieces of split air-conditioning compressors, with value yet unknown, property of one Sogunro Olayinka, the complainant.
    “The defendant unlawfully entered the premises of the hotel which is the property of the complainant.
    “The offences contravene Sections 287and 306 of the Criminal Law of Lagos state, 2015,” he said.
    The Chief Magistrate, Mr N.A. Layeni, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum.
    Layeni said that one of the sureties must be a community leader, with three year tax clearance.

    Badagry (Lagos State), June 27, 2024 (NAN) The Police on Lagos on Thursday arraigned a 32-year-old bartender, Emmanuel Johnson for allegedly stealing his employer’s N2,3 million.
    Johnson is charged with theft and breach of peace, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court.
     He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
    The Prosecutor, Insp Edet Ekpo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on June 11 at  10.50.p.m, at No 2/4, Peter King Ilogbo, Badagry.
    Ekpo said that the defendant failed to pay the money  into his employer, Mr Collins Emeka’s account.
    He said that the defendant converted the money to his personal use.
    “All efforts made by the complainant to retrieve his money proved abortive,” the prosecutor said.
    Ekpo said that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace when he refused to pay back the money.
    The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 287 (7) and 168 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.
    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 (7) stipulates seven years jail term for stealing from one’s employer.
    The Chief Magistrate, Mr N À Layeni, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
    Layeni ordered that one of the sureties must be a cleric while the other surety should be a community leader.

  • NDLEA Special Command in Badagry arrests 194 suspects in 1 year

    Badagry (Lagos State), June 26, 2024 (NAN) The Special Command of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Seme, Badagry, says it arrested 194 suspects and also convicted 48 people in one year.
    Mr Owen Dinneys, Area Commander, disclosed this on Wednesday during a news conference to commemorate the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Badagry.

     

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the 2024 event is “The Evidence Is Clear: Invest in Prevention”.

     

    Dinneys stated that out of the 194 suspects, 149 were male and 45 female.

     

    “Several other cases are still ongoing at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.

     

    “A total of 159 drug users were counselled and discharged, while three referrals were made during the same period,” he said.

     

    The Area Commander noted that the command seized 10,974.12 kg of assorted drugs, equivalent to over 10 tonnes.

    The seized drug exhibits included: Cannabis: 10,967.5 kilogrammes;
    Methamphetamine: 0.98 kilogrammes; Tramadol: 3.576 kilogrammes; Diazepam: 2.06 kilogrammes; Rophynol: 0.3375 kilogrammes in the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA).

     

    NAN also reports that the command elevated its awareness campaigns in schools, churches, mosques, markets and government institutions.

     

    “We even carried our advocacy drive to traditional institutions and well-meaning community leaders/stakeholders,” Dinneys said.

     

    During the period under review, the WADA team visited 70 public and private schools, 16 mosques, 10 churches, and 54 public and private organisations, including markets, CDAs, and the Okada Riders Association, for awareness campaigns.

     

    “We intend to visit all the schools within our area of responsibility to ensure that no child is left uninformed on the dangers of drug abuse,” he added.

     

    NAN reports that officials of the agency, along with other security agencies, walked within the Badagry area, sensitising residents on the menace of drug abuse.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Badagry (Lagos State), June 26, 2024 (NAN) 15 Field Engineer Regiment of Nigerian Army, Topo, Badagry, Lagos on Wednesday organised a free medical outreach/services for the residents of the community.
    It was part of activities to enhance Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC).
    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme included blood pressure check, breast cancer awareness lectures and examination, medication for malaria and fever.
    The unit used the avenue to sensitise the residents on  how to prevent the outbreak of cholera within the community.
    The Commanding Officer of the Regiment, Lt Col Sagir Lawan, said that the outreach was to enhance CIMIC relations, improve cooperation and social collaboration as well as  responsibilities.
    “This is aimed at  creating cordial relationships between the Nigerian military, Para military agencies and the civilians of the community.
    “The military cares about the health and wellbeing of its people.
    “We are always ready to assist in terms of security and where else necessary,” he said.
    He said the outreach would surely sensitise the residents and further educate them  on the preventive measures against cholera disease.
    “Apart from that, we are also going to be testing them for B.P,, offer free medical consultations and thereafter administer some drugs to individuals,” he said.
    Lawan told the residents to cooperate and collaborate with the team so as to have a good outing.
    Dr Samuel Ayoola, the medical doctor with the Regiment, urged the residents to prevent cancer of the breast by conducting regular checks.
    He advised the gathering that early detection could save one with the disease.
    On the outbreak of cholera disease, Mrs Temitope Adedoja, a nurse in the regiment, urged the residents to wash their hands regularly with soap.
    She urged the residents of Badagry to also boil their water before drinking, and wash fruits and vegetables before cooking, as preventive measures.
    The Depegan of Badagry Kingdom, Chief Tunde Giro, who represented the Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi 1, in his remarks, said the medical outreach was first of its kind in the town.
    He promised that the residents of the town would continue to cooperate and collaborate with Nigerian Army to fulfill their mandates.
    Chief Giro commended the Commanding Officer for providing the free medical outreach for the residents.
    NAN reports that the free Medical Outreach/Services was done at the premises of Akran of Badagry, with the chiefs present.
    NAN also reports that residents, market men and women, old and young, received medical treatment from the officials of the Regiment. (NAN)

  • Customs intercepts 26,792 litres of petrol in Badagry

    Badagry (Lagos State), June 24, 2024 (NAN) The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Zone A Team of Operation Whirlwind Task Force, has intercepted over 26,792 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), known as petroleum, in Badagry.

    Comptroller Huseein Ejibunu, the Head, Operation Whirlwind, disclosed this at a news briefing on Monday in Seme, Lagos.

    “Our team, acting on credible intelligence reports, intercepted 43 kegs of petrol 30 litres each equivalent of 1,290 litres.

    “One Mark tanker truck with chassis no: IMIAD3840TWO03697 containing 15, 200 litres of petrol was also intercepted at Jubau filling station along Seme Badagry road.

    “On June 14, one Suzuki salon car with registration number SMK 83 Bk, used as means of conveyance was seized.

    “One Pathfinder Jeep with Reg no: ABJ 591 DC and one Toyota Avensis with Reg no: 1973 with both specially built Bunkers were loaded with petrol at Muse filling station were also intercepted.

    “Though, we are yet to ascertain the litres in each of the vehicles.

    “Another 124 kegs of petrol 30 litres each equivalent to 3,720 litres and 65 kegs of petrol of 40 litres each equivalent to 2,600 litres,” he said.

    He said that another 189 kegs of petrol was intercepted at Timi Boy Global Venture on June 19.

    “The total petrol intercepted is over 26, 792 litres of petrol,” he said.

    He said that since formation, Operation Whirlwind team had made tremendous impact in all the zones based on statistically verified records and value of PMS intercepted.

    “For clarity and record purposes, the team had intercepted 26, 950 litres of PMS worth NI9 million in our maiden edition news conference held at Customs Command Abeokuta barely two weeks after inauguration.

    “In a similar development, the teams’ efforts geared toward curtailing the menace of illegal smuggling of PMS product in zone ‘A’ axis, all resulted in the interception of 21, 810 Litres of PMS product.

    ‘The devastating effects of smuggling are numerous as it causes distortion in supply chain of petroleum products to designated states and filling stations revealed based on credible intelligence.

    “In most instances, petroleum products were diverted to neighboring countries.

    “However, this unwholesome practice contributes tremendously to insecurity as diverted petroleum products were to be used by bandits and other notorious groups undermining the integrity of our nation,” he said.

    Lagos, (NAN) June 23, 2024 (NAN) Mr Emmanuel Ahmadu, a Nigerian graduate who failed the West Africa School Certificate of Education (WASCE) 17 times, has  urged youths to remain resilient and never lose hope, regardless of challenges they face.
    Ahmadu, who was recently honoured with two doctorate degrees in the U.S., gave the advice in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.
    According to Ahmadu, who is also known as ‘Mr Voiceover’, dedication and a strong belief in oneself are crucial in overcoming adversity.
    “Seek out opportunities for growth, leverage available resources, and connect with mentors and supportive networks.
    “Remember, every setback is a setup for a greater comeback.
    “Keep pushing forward, and your efforts will eventually yield success,” he said.
    He said that his remarkable journey from overcoming significant personal and educational setbacks, to becoming a global advocate for mental health, underscores the power of resilience and the impact of unwavering determination.
    “My story is a beacon of hope for youths facing similar challenges, inspiring them to rise above their circumstances and make meaningful impacts in their communities and beyond,” he said.
    According  to him, his journey is nothing short of extraordinary, overcoming significant educational and personal challenges.
    “I first gained international attention in 2018 as the International Award for Student Brand of the Year in West Africa while studying at the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
    ‘My story of resilience, having attended 16 primary schools and 14 secondary schools due to family instability, and sitting for O’level examination 17 times over five years before passing, showcases unparalleled determination.”
    He said when he graduated in Mass Communication from the University of Benin in 2018, he received recognition from the vice-chancellor as an extraordinary student whose achievements were archived in the university’s main library to inspire hope in others.
    Ahmadu said that he was also recognised as the ‘Most Innovative Student in Nigeria’ and ‘Media Personality of the Year’, among other prestigious awards.
    In the USA, he has continued to make significant strides.
    He said that his impact earned him numerous awards, including “Distinguished Student Leader with a Big Heart” from the College and “Outstanding Mental Health Advocate of the Year” by the Active Minds.
    NAN recalls that Ahmadu,  on June 8, received an honorary Doctorate Degree in International Affairs (DIA) from Global Seminary University, New York, USA, in collaboration with GEPEA University, Portugal.
    This prestigious recognition acknowledges his significant contributions to promoting peace, sustainable mental wellness, and hope globally.
    NAN also reports that in addition, he was honoured as a Professional Doctoral Fellow by The Across Global Institute of Foreign Languages (AGIFL) for his outstanding leadership and global achievements in mental health advocacy. (NAN)
