  • REA advocates unified strategies to achieve Nigeria’s net zero goals

REA advocates unified strategies to achieve Nigeria’s net zero goals

    Goal

    By Philomina Attah
Abuja, June 27, 2024 (NAN) The Managing Director, Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Mr Abba Aliyu, has emphasised the need for aligning sector strategies to meet the country’s net-zero commitments.

Net zero means achieving a balance between the carbon emitted into the atmosphere and the carbon removed from it.

Aliyu made the call at a workshop organised by the Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) with the theme “Aligning Sector Strategies with Net Zero Commitments” in Abuja on Thursday.

Aliyu, who was represented by Ms Ngozi Chimdi-Ejiogu, an acting director in REA, stressed the critical importance of Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the Energy Transition Plan (ETP) in the country’s journey towards a sustainable future.

He noted that Nigeria was committed to significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under the Paris Agreement.

“In July 2021, the nation reaffirmed its pledge to reduce emissions by 20 per cent below business-as-usual levels by 2030, with plans to increase this reduction to 47 per cent contingent on international support.

“The Federal Ministry of Environment’s 2021 NDC update highlighted the energy sector as the largest emitter, responsible for 60 per cent of emissions, primarily from oil and gas activities, transport, electricity generation and residential and industrial energy consumption.

“Agriculture, forestry, waste, and industrial processes also contribute to the country’s overall emissions,” he said.

Aliyu outlined a multi-faceted strategy to bridge the gap between sectors and align with Nigeria’s NDCs and ETP.

This strategy, according to him, includes strengthening policy and regulatory frameworks by developing sector-specific roadmaps and incentivizing sustainable practices.

Reflecting on the REA’s achievements, Aliyu highlighted the success of programmes like the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP), which had demonstrated significant strides in providing energy access.

“The REA is now focused on scaling these solutions by developing large-scale clean energy projects, driving economic impact beyond energy access, creating innovative financing solutions and strategic partnerships, stimulating demand for reliable power, and providing avenues for local and blended financing.

“The REA has already made substantial progress, with over 160 MW of clean energy deployed, 1.8 million connections made, impacting over 7 million Nigerians, and reducing carbon emissions by 1.6 million tonnes.

“The upcoming Distributed Access to Renewable Energy Scale up (DARES) Project aligns with the Paris Agreement, ensuring that all financed activities are consistent with Nigeria’s climate commitments, he explained.

He further explained the importance of a collective effort to meet Nigeria’s conditional and unconditional contributions, recognising the vital role each sector played in maintaining the global 1.5°C pathway.

He, therefore, called for continuous collaborative efforts to align strategies with Nigeria’s net-zero commitments, urging active participation from all stakeholders.

Aliyu expressed confidence that the deliberations and collaborations from the dialogue would significantly contribute to the global effort to align sector strategies and build a more sustainable, equitable, and energy-secure future for Nigeria.

On his part, Mr Somkele Awa-Kalu from Sustainable Energy for All/Energy Transition Office, in an interview with newsmen on Nigeria’s energy transition, explained the nation’s progress towards a sustainable, low-carbon economy.

He added that the workshop aimed to assess Nigeria’s journey towards this goal and to delve into the implementation of the Energy Transition Plan by the Energy Transition Office.

Awa-Kalu underscored the importance of understanding recent developments in the energy transition and highlighted the long-standing collaboration with key stakeholders in the renewable energy landscape, including the Energy Transition Office.

He added that the workshop would address the need for enhanced partnerships within the renewable energy sector, which he described as both nascent and essential.

He called for stakeholders to support one another, align their objectives, and collaborate to facilitate and accelerate the energy transition.

In his presentation, Awa-Kalu stressed the necessity of improving access to low-cost financing for renewable energy projects.

He highlighted the importance of the Energy Transition Plan within the framework of the Renewed Hope Agenda, a key focus of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Awa-Kalu urged stakeholders to work together to ensure the availability of appropriate financing and an enabling environment, including supportive policies, to advance renewable energy objectives.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the workshop aims at significant step in Nigeria’s commitment to achieving a low-carbon economy, reinforcing the collaborative efforts required to meet the nation’s renewable energy goals. (NAN)

  • Agric ministry, NGO advocate sustainable action to tackle climate change

    Climate

    By Philomina Attah
Abuja, June 26, 2024 (NAN) The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has called on Nigerians, particularly the youth, to plant trees to combat the adverse effects of climate change.

Mr Oshadiya Olanipekun, Director of Agricultural Lands and Climate Change Management Services at the ministry, made the call on Wednesday, in Abuja.

Olanipekun, represented by Mrs Anna Kalu, said that the ministry was committed to the government’s renewed hope agenda, which included ensuring food security.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised by Caritas Nigeria, an NGO, with the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience”, to mark this year’s World Environment Day.

He outlined the severe impact of climate change on global food security, advocating that “when you cut one tree, ensure you plant two trees to replace that one”.

“Climate change is driven by human activities like deforestation and release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These exacerbate global warming.

“Deforestation, the act of cutting down trees which serve as carbon sinks by absorbing carbon dioxide, is identified as a major contributor to climate change,” he said.

He highlighted the environmental consequences such as land degradation and drought, especially in Nigeria’s northern regions.

“To address these challenges, the ministry, in collaboration with international donors and local communities, is implementing land restoration projects like Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACRESAL) in 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“In observance of World Environment Day, the ministry stressed the importance of individual actions in mitigating climate change.

“When we burn, we release potent greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.

“To counter this, we must engage in afforestation through planting trees to reduce carbon dioxide levels and lower global temperatures,” he said.

Earlier, the Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Rev. Fr Zachariah Samjumi, had emphasised the critical role of the environment in human survival.

He recalled the recent cholera outbreaks caused by environmental contamination, saying that it  underlined the need for a clean and healthy environment.

Fr Samjumi made reference to Pope Francis’s 2015 encyclical on the environment which had been globally recognised and discussed at high-level meetings like the G7.

He commended students and schools for their involvement in environmental initiatives and encouraged them to reflect their environmental knowledge in their daily lives.

On his part, Osi Braimah, a director in the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), said that the engagement of religious leaders and communities in climate change issues was critical in promoting sound environmental practices

Braimah, represented by Mr Ezekiel Oye-Ojo, further explained that together, humanity could foster a culture of sustainability and stewardship of the earth.

“I urge each of you to take action in protecting our environment. Simple actions, such as reducing waste, conserving water, and planting trees, can make a significant difference.

“Let us commit to promoting sustainable development and ensuring a healthy environment for future generations and ourselves,” he said.

Mr Udeaja Ikenna, Geographical information System’s (GIS) Consultant to Caritas Nigeria, in his presentation, urged the government to provide a central water board system that would supply water instead of individual sinking their boreholes

“Nigerians are so insensitive to the sinking of boreholes in the country. You discover each compound sinking their boreholes. Geologists tell us that in the near future, we are prone to earthquakes.

“Any slightest movement, an earthquake will happen. So what about the government having a central water board that will supply water instead of people sinking boreholes?

“Or better still, why not one or three houses use one borehole? Instead of each house having a private borehole?” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Abuja, June 25, 2024 (NAN) Mr Christopher Maikalangu, Chairman, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), says he is committed to providing an impactful governance to the citizens of the municipality.

Maikalangu made this pledge while performing the ground-breaking ceremony for the construction and rehabilitation of Lugbe Primary School and Lugbe Chief Palace Township roads on Tuesday in Abuja.

He highlighted the council’s achievements over the past two years, emphasising his commitment to enhancing social amenities across the 12 wards of AMAC.

“Today’s ceremony is a confirmation of my promises towards being responsive to the basic needs of our people.

“The vital role of infrastructure in boosting the economic conditions of the residents is important hence the need for this inauguration.’’

Maikalangu said that, as part of the council’s ongoing roads revolution, over 15 asphalt legacy roads across the council’s three zones were ready for commissioning.

According to him, the initiative aligns with the council’s broader vision to improve the quality of life for its residents through comprehensive infrastructure projects, including rural electrification, water supply, health services and educational development.

The chairman also urged residents to fulfill their civic duties by paying taxes and levies, stressing that such contributions were essential for sustaining and expanding public services.

“These projects will not have been possible if residents fail to pay their taxes and levies to government,’’ he said.

Maikalangu credited his achievements to the support and inspiration provided by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory,  Nyesom Wike, and the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He called on traditional rulers, property owners and other stakeholders to cooperate with contractors and ensure the quality of the work being carried out.

The chairman urged AMAC citizens to protect public infrastructure and report any sub-standard work, and also congratulated all involved and wished for the successful completion of the projects.

The Director of Works in AMAC, Mr Andrew Gaza, while giving overview of the project, expressed his delight and pride at the ground-breaking ceremony.

Gaza highlighted the significance of the developments and praised the efforts of the chairman.

“The project is particularly important to me as it directly impacts my ward,” he said.

He lauded the chairman’s commitment to fulfilling campaign promises and delivering numerous infrastructure projects, including electrification and water supply, within a short period of assuming office.

According to him, Maikalangu is truly a promise keeper and everyone is grateful for his large-hearted service to our community and the entire FCT.

Be patriotic, respect constituted authorities – Cleric urges Nigerians

    Cleric

    By Philomina Attah

Abuja, June 25, 2024 (NAN) Pastor Gabriel Aboderin, Regional Superintendent, Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Medaiyese Region in Abuja, has called on Nigerians to be patriotic to the nation and respect its constituted authorities.

Aboderin made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that in spite of the challenges facing the country, the citizens must celebrate together, be patriotic to the nation and continue to pray for its greatness.

He emphasised that the Amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914 was not a mistake

“It was an act of God for the country to be united as one indivisible entity destined to be great.

“Our being together is designed by God. And if we appreciate that, it will help us to be patriotic because without one another, we cannot survive.

“The Lord has brought us together. All that is expected from us is to be patriotic citizens.

“It is even written in the Bible, Psalm 137, that “if I forget you, Jerusalem, May my right hand forget its skill”.

“It is when we get to that level in Nigeria that we can think about our future. We need something that helps us to appreciate our togetherness.

“So, being a citizen of Nigeria should be a thing of pride to us. We are praying to God for that awareness,” he said.

Aboderin advised Nigerians to always respect constituted authorities, especially the office of the President.

While reacting to the allegations that President Bola Tinubu was snubbed by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, during his inauguration ceremony in Cape Town, the Cleric said the claim was a lie.

“It was just a false allegation made by some Nigerians on social media.

“It is even an aberration for anyone to rejoice over any form of perceived disrepute to the Office of the President, which is a symbol, and the highest position in the country.”

He said that such attitude should not be found among patriots.

“In America, the Presidency is worshipped like an idol. After each election, they forget all their differences and work towards a common goal to make America a great nation.

“Nigerians should be looking toward quality governance; it is a terrible thing to seek to rejoice when our President is disgraced somewhere. That is an aberration no one should be identified with,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Silence

    By Philomina Attah
Abuja, June 22, 2024 (NAN) John Cardinal Onaiyekan, Emeritus Archbishop of Abuja Catholic Archdiocese, has said that silence in the face of social injustice is a crime against the gospel of Christ and the nation.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports event also witnessed the graduation ceremony of the trainers of CST programme.

Onaiyekan said, beyond evangelism, the Church must inculcate communication on justice and peace, all encapsulated in its social teachings.

“This initiative has been made possible by the wisdom of the Bishops Conference, ensuring that the teaching and learning of CST by the staff of the bishops’ agencies takes place at the secretariat.

“The next stage is to go into action. We will divide the staffers here into various classes and assign them to teachers.

Over the next two weeks, we will conduct the programmes every Friday until they graduate,” he said.

Obodoechina, the Executive Secretary of the Catholic Caritas Foundation of Nigeria (CCFN), also emphasised the significance of social teachings.

He reiterated the commitment to continue the CST education programme, fostering a deeper understanding of social justice and the Church’s role in society.

“We are creating a ripple effect of knowledge and awareness that will extend far beyond the secretariat, impacting communities and society at large,” he added..
