POS operator docked for allegedly stealing customer’s phone

Kaduna, June 27, 2024 ( NAN) A 22-year-old Point of Sale (POS) operator, Garbriel Timothy, was docked on Thursday in a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna for allegedly stealing a customer ‘s cellphone worth N215,000.

The police charged Timothy with theft.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June at the Mahuta Junction in Kaduna.

He alleged that the accused stole a Samsung  galaxy A14 belonging to one Janet Simon when she went to his stand to withdraw money.

“When she returned to get the phone, the accused denied seeing the phone but another customer told her he saw when the accused put the phone in his bag,” he stated.

He further said that the accused was handed over to the police after the phone was discovered in his possession.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State 2017, which stipulates 4 year jail term if found guilty.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case until July 29, for trial. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Teenager docked for allegedly stealing 2 dozens of plastic chairs, TV set

Kaduna, June 27, 2024 (NAN)A teenager , Matthew Dogo, was on Thursday docked in Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduba for allegedly stealing two dozens of plastic chairs, a TV set and a generator.

The police charged Dogo, who resides in Barnawa area of Kaduna with criminal conspiracy, burglary and theft.

The Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on June. 18 at about 6:00 a.m at a Shopping Complex in Barnawa.

Leo said that the accused and two others, ar large broke into a shops belonging to one Adams John and stole a two dozens of plastic chairs, a TV set and generator all worth N379, 900.

According to him, the accused and his accomplices entered into the shop through the ceiling and stole the items.

Leo further explained that the accused was arrested by members of the community vigilance group while the others escaped.

The prosecutor told the court that the accused confessed to the crime .

He said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 57, 217 and 306 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, admitted Dogo to bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

Emmanuel ordered that the surety must be gainfully employed and should reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

He further ordered the surety to furnish the court with evidence of tax payment to Kaduna State Government.

He adjourned the case until July 18, for hearing. (NAN)

Travel agent jailed 18 months for N4.2m visa fraud

Kaduna, June 26, 2024 (NAN) A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a 40-year-old travel agent, Olalekan Yusuf, to 18 months imprisonment for N4.2m visa fraud.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced Yusuf after he pleaded guilty to the offence and begged for leniency.

He, however, gave him an option of N200, 000 fine and ordered him to restitute N4.1m to the complainants, Sarah Thomas and Christian Gabriel.

Emmanuel further ordered that on the event the convict failed to restitute the complainants, he shall serve additional one year prison term.

Yusuf, a resident of Malali, Kaduna, is standing trial for fraud.

The prosecutor told the court that the matter was reported at the Gabasawa Police Station Kaduna on June 16.

He said that sometime in Jan. 24, the defendant obtained N2.1million each from the complainants, on the pretext of being a travel agent and could assist them in securing a travel visa to the U.S.and Dubai.

“The defendant approached the complainants claiming he was a travel agent when he heard that they needed an agent to help them process a U.S. and Dubai visa.

“After collecting the money from the complainants, he absconded to an unknown destination.

“Efforts made by the complainants to get the visa or retrieve his money from the defendant proved unsuccessful as the defendant refused to pick calls from the complainant’s cell phone,” Leo said.

He added that the defendant was arrested on June 16, at his house after the complainants got his address from his friend.

The prosecutor said that the offences violated the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Tailor docked for allegedly stealing friend’s sewing machine

Kaduna, June 19, 2024(NAN) A 27-year-old tailor, Samson Godwin, was on Wednesday docked in a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing his friend’s sewing machine worth N146, 000.

The defendant, who lives in Barnawa area of Kaduna, is charged with theft.

He, however, pleaded not gulty to the charge.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence in a shop located at Barnawa Market Kaduna belonging to his friend, Raymond Francis.

Leo alleged that the defendant and two others now at large, broke into the shop of the complainant and stole a sewing machine worth N146, 000.

He said that the complainant however saw the stolen sewing machine in his friend’s apartment when he paid him an unscheduled visit.

Leo said the offence contravened the provisions of Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel admitted the defendant to a bail of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

He directed that the sureties should be gainfully employed and must also show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.

He adjourned the matter until July 22, for hearing. (NAN)

Kaduna, June 19, 2024 (NAN) A 44-year commercial driver, Salisu Adamu, was on Wednesday, arraigned before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a passenger.

Adamu, whose address was not given, is being charged with assault.

The Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence at NDA Junction, Kaduna.

He said that Adamu gave the complainant, Haruna Gambo, several fist-blows that caused him severe injuries on his face following a disagreement over N200.

He said that Gambo was rescued by onlookers before the defendant was arrested by a policeman on duty at the bus stop.

Leo said that the offence contravened Section 224 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 224 of the code prescribes a three-year jail term for offenders.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

Kaduna, June 13, 2024 (NAN) A Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna, on Friday sentenced a 27-year old man, Williams David, to two years imprisonment for being in possession of illicit drugs.

David was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) over alleged possession of illicit drugs.

David pleaded guilty to the charge, begged for leniency and pledged to turn a new leaf.

In his judgment, Justice Hadiza Shagari, sentenced David to a two-year jail term without an option of fine.

“This is to serve as a deterrent to others, it is done in consideration of your age and indulgence in notorious crimes,” he said.

Shagari ordered that the illicit drugs tendered as exhibits should be burnt by the NDLEA after 30 days of the judgment.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr T. J. Atserhegh, told the court that the convicts was arrested by officials of NDLEA at about 8.00p.m on June 2, at Kinkinau, Kaduna.

He said that 4kg of marijuana, 49.3g of tramadol and 8g of Exol-5 were found in his possession.

Atserhegh said that the offence contravened the NDLEA Act, Cap 30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Kaduna, June 11, 2024 (NAN) A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday sentenced a 38-year-old mechanic, Samson Dogo, to eight months imprisonment for stealing his customer’s vehicle parts.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, jailed Dogo, of Malali, Kaduna, without an option of fine.

Emmanuel said that the sentence followed the convict’s guilty plea to the two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

He said that the punishment would have been more severe if he had not pleaded guilty and saved the court the pains of prolonged prosecution.

The magistrate warned the convict against taking to crimes again and ordered him to restitute the sum of N503,000 to the complainant, Michal Edward.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, said that the defendant committed the offences on June 4 at Malali, Kaduna.

Leo said that the defendant collected the sum of N398,000 from the complainant and promised that he would buy a new engine for his Toyota Camry car and fix it, a representation he knew to be false.

The prosecutor said that the defendant did not buy the engine or fix it but converted the money to his personal use and stole some parts of the car.

“The defendant also stole two of the car tyres, valued at N83,000 and the front bumper, valued at N22,000.

“All efforts made by the complainant to get his money back failed,’’ Leo said.

Guard docked for allegedly stealing employer’s  gold jewelry worth N1.9m

Kaduna, June 11, 2024(NAN) A 30-year-old security guard, Mustapha Ahmed, was on Tuesday docked in a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing his employer’s gold jewelly worth N1.9 million.

Ahmed, who resides in  Kawo area of Kaduna is charged with three counts of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust and theft..

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant and two others at large, on June 4 committed the offence at the Ungwan Sarki, Kaduna.

According to Leo, the defendant and his accomplices also N450, 000 cash from his employer .

“Other items stolen are: a Iphone valued at N430,000 and one HP Laptop worth N200,000, laptop adaptor and one webcam worth N17, 500.

The prosecutor further stated that the defendant was caught on CCTV committing the crime.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, admitted Ahmed to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

He further ordered the sureties to provide evidence of tax payment to Kaduna State Government.
