    Trader jailed 2 years for stealing security safe

    Jos, June 14, 2024 ( NAN) A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Friday, sentenced a 19-year-old trader, Ahmad Umar to two years imprisonment for trespassing and stealing a security safe from a fuel station.

    The Magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, summarily tried and sentenced the defendant after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

    The magistrate, however, gave the convict an option to pay N100,000 .

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Ijuptil Thawal told the court that the case was reported on Jan. 7, at the “A” Police station Jos by one Cecilia Ali, the complaint.

    The prosecutor said the convict trespassed into the fuel station office and stole the safe containing N361,000 before he was caught.

    The offence, according to him, is punishable under the Plateau state Penal Code Law. (NAN)

    Commission appeals to religious, women leaders to fight GBV in Plateau

    Jos, June 13, 2024  (NAN) Mrs Olivia Dazyem,  Chairperson, Plateau Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission, has appealed to religious and women leaders to fight Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the state.
    Dazyem made the appeal during a stakeholders meeting with wives of heads of denominations, women leaders, and Muslim women organisations in Jos on Thursday .
    The chairperson said that the interface with the women was to make them know that they were critical and strategic stakeholders in changing the narrative of GBV in the state.
    She said people have the right to report when their rights were infringed upon and also get justice for it.
    “We want to say that perpetrators would be prosecuted and made to face the full wrath of the law,” Dazyem said.
    The chairperson said women must be prepared to stand against the culture of silence that would make them shield perpetrators of GBV.
    Speaking during the meeting, Mrs Sarah Dalut, Women leader of all Christian denominations, said the meeting was apt and timely.
    “To hear that parents are selling their children for money is strange and even give out their girls for prostitution is bad, “ said Dalut.
    Dalut said that clearly poverty was the root cause of this problem and the solution was to empower as many women as possible.
    Representative of Amirah, Federation of Muslim Women Association in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Plateau chapter, Mrs Simbiatu Sallawu, said that the association would sensitise women against GBV. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Jos, June 7, 2024 ( NAN) A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Friday, sentenced a 19-year-old trader, Aliyu Ibrahim to one  month imprisonment for stealing clothes worth N32, 000..

    Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos, summarily tried and sentenced the defendant after he pleaded guilty to theft.

    The magistrate, however, gave the convict an option to pay N10, 000.

    Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Ijuptil Thawal told the court that the case was reported on May 4, at the Railway Police station Jos by one Garba Mohammed, the complaint.

    The prosecutor said the convict trespassed into the railway quarter and stole seven pieces of clothing before he was caught.

    The offence, according to him, is punishable under the Plateau  Penal Code Law. (NAN)

  • Farmer jailed 1 month for stealing cell phone

    Jos, June 7, 2024 (NAN) A Plateau Magistrates’ Court sitting in Jos, on Friday, sentenced a 20-year old farmer, Mustapha Hamid to one month imprisonment for stealing a cell phone.

    The Magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, in a summary trial, sentenced the defendant after he pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing.

    The magistrate, however, gave the convict an option of fine of N10,000.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the case was reported at the Larato Police Station, Jos by some market leaders on May 6.

    Gokwat said that the convict stole the phone from a shop in the market before he was caught.

    He said that the offence contravened the Plateau State Penal Code Law.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
