2 men docked over alleged N450, 000 cable theft

Lagos, June 28, 2024 (NAN) Two men, Prince Friday, 31; and Alex Kalu, 34; who allegedly  stole three Coleman rolls of cable worth N450, 000, on Friday appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The men, whose residential addresses were not given, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp Courage Ekhueorohan, told the court that the men and some others still at large committed the offences on June 14, at No 35, Dosunmu St., Obele, Surulere, Lagos.

Ekhueorohan alleged that the duo conspired to steal three Coleman rolls of cable worth N450,000, property of Megamound Investment Ltd.

He said that the defendants were caught before they carted the cable and were immediately taken to the police station.

The offences, Ekhueorohan said, contravene Sections 180 (a) (i) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.O Otitoju, granted the men bail in the sum of N200,000 with two responsible sureties each in like sum.

She said that the sureties must have a means of livelihood and their addresses verified by the court

Otitoju adjourned the matter until July 12, for substantive trial. (NAN)

Court remands handyman for stealing  ”Fila” sneakers

Lagos, June 28, 2024 (NAN) A Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos, on Friday remanded a 24-year-old handyman, Paul Kofi, for allegedlly stealing two bundles of Fila sneakers worth N1 million.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.O Otitoju ordered the remand  until July 12 for review of facts of the case and sentencing.

The defendant whose house address was not provided, had pleaded guilty to conspiracy and thegt.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Courage Ekhueorohan, told the court that Kofi and some others at large, committed the offence at No 21, Olajuwon st., off Ojuelegba Road.Yaba Lagos.

Ekhueorohan submitted that while Kofi was employed to fix the POP (Plaster Of Paris) in the building, he conspired with some others to steal two bundles of Fila sneakers worth N1 million.

He added that the stolen property belonged to Zealluck Resource Nigeria Ltd.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 287 (7) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 411 carries two years imprisonment for offenders. (NAN)

Lagos, June 25, 2024 (NAN) A 39-year-old man, Dike Chinedu, who stood surety for a friend, but failed to produce him in court as required, on Tuesday, appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Chinedu, whose house address was not given, entered a ‘not-guilty’ plea to a charge of perversion of justice.
The Prosecutor, Insp Courage Ekhueorohan, told the court that Chinedu committed the offence on Aug. 11, 2023 at Itire Divisional Police Headquarters in the Lagos magisterial district.
Ekhueorohan said that the defendant conspired with one other person to obstruct and pervert the course of justice.
“The defendant stood as a surety for one Henry Ajih, a friend who was involved in a case of obtaining by false pretences reported at the station.
“Ajih was granted bail and released to the defendant who promised to produce him at the station on Aug. 13, 2023 and other subsequent days until the case is finally disposed of.
“The accused is hereby called upon to show cause why the sum of N200,000 bond executed by him should not be forfeited,” the prosecutor said.
According to him, the offence contravenes Section 97(3) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 97 provides seven years imprisonment for perversion of justice, while sub-section three provides for two years imprisonment.
The Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Otitoju, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, with two responsible sureties in like sum.

Man in court over alleged N1.6m fraud

Lagos, June 25, 2024 (NAN) One Simon Udokanma, 39, on Tuesday, appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos State, charged with using a fake N1.6 million bank alert to purchase gym equipment.

Udokanma, who resides at No. 90, Shola Martins Olaniyi St., Abule-Egba, Lagos, is facing trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining by false pretences, forgery and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp Courage Ekhueorohan, told the court that Udokanma and some others still at large committed the offences between April 25 and May 21, at Alawode St., Ikate, Surulere, Lagos. 

Ekhueorohan alleged that Udokanma fraudulently obtained three units of massaging machines, two exercise bicycles, three sets of royal weight plates and three vibrating iron, all valued at N1.6 million.

He said that Udokanma forged and sent Zenith bank transaction alert receipt as payment evidence for the gym equipments to the shop owner, one Fortunate Chidera.

Ekhueorohan said the offences committed contravened sections 287, 314, 363 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Udokanma, however, pleaded not guilty to the offences when the charges were read to him.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 314 stipulates 15 years for obtaining under false pretences.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Otitoju, admitted Udokanma to bail in the sum of N500,000, with two responsible sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must provide evidence of a means of livelihood and their addresses should be verified by the court.

Lagos, June 24, 2024 (NAN) A 39-year-old estate agent, Moses Ayere, on Monday, appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly defrauding an accommodation seeker of N500,000.

Ayere, who resides at No 17, Ekololu St., Surulere, Lagos, is facing a two count charge of obtaining money by false pretences and stealing.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Courage Ekhueorohan, told the court that the defendant allegedly committed the offences sometime in May, at No 24, Falolu St., Surulere, Lagos.

Ekhueorohan alleged that Ayere obtained the sum of N500,000 from the complainant, one Abiodun Moshood, on the pretext that he would rent out a three-bedroom apartment to her.

He told the court that the defendant knowing his presentation was false, allegedly converted the money to his personal use and failed to provide the complainant with the said desired accommodation.

According to Ekhueorohan, the offences contravene Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 314 attracts 15 years for obtaining under false pretenses.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. O. Otitoju, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N250,000, with two responsible sureties in like sum.
