Aba(Abia) June 22, 2024 (NAN) Enyimba International FC midfielder, Elijah Akanni, says his team must defeat visiting Plateau United on Sunday to stand a chance of playing in the 2024/2025 CAF Champions League.

Akanni spoke with newsmen after the team’s morning training on Saturday, describing the game as a must-win for Enyimba.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Enyimba will on Sunday, inside the Enyimba International Stadium Aba, host Plateau United in match day 38 of the NPFL 2023/2024 season.

Akanni, who acknowledged that the match would be a tough one, said that the players would go all out to give their best and ensure a convincing victory.

He said, “The game is going to be an important one for us, and being the last match of the season, it is a must-win against Plateau United for us.

“We are going to give our best to win and get back to the top where we belong, so that we can play next season champions league.

“Our target before the season was to retain the title, but due to the turn of events along the line, we had a setback after the match day 36 against Bayelsa United where we played out 1-1.

Akanni said that champions league position was not a bad one for the team and they were going to fight for it on Sunday in order not to lose out entirely.

“As a continental team, it will be beneficial to Enyimba, the state and country, if we still maintain our champions league status.

“Enyimba has been a regular customer of champions league and still needs to maintain its status at the global stage,”Akanni said.

NAN reports that Enyimba occupied third position on the league table with 60 points while Remo Stars of Ogun State occupied second position with 62 points after week 37 round of matches.

Plateau United, in the same period, stood at the fifth position with 58 points.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng.com)

  • NPFL: Bayelsa United draw 1-1 with Enyimba in Aba

    Draw
    By Nicholas Obisike
Aba (Abia) June 12, 2024 (NAN) Enyimba International FC of Aba on Wednesday suffered another setback in the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), when they drew 1-1 with visiting Bayelsa United.

In the Match Day 36 fixture of the NPFL, Enyimba’s Alade Balogun raised the hope of the teeming Aba fans when he finished off Chijioke Mbaoma’s pass in the 20th minute to give them an early lead.

However, the team’s celebration was shortlived as Ekeson Okorie’s close range shot beat Enyimba’s goalkeeper Ani Ozomena to level scores at 1-1 in the 35th minute.

In a post-match interview, Olanrewaju Yemi, the coach of Enyimba, said the frustration his players suffered following the Match Day 35 fixture against Rangers International FC of Enugu on Sunday affected their psyche.

According to him, the development caused them their dream against the visitors.

Yemi said: “I know that it is going to affect us because we were slow in the first half.

“After all the fight in Enugu, I had to motivate the players and let them know that it was not yet over.

“This is our worst performance so far in the league.

“Had it been that our play did not improve after the first 45 minutes, we would have lost the match.

“We were slow in the first half and improved our game in the second half.

“Our players were down when they learnt that their effort in Enugu was frustrated.

“The players never expected the deduction of three points and three goals and that caused a setback to the team,” Yemi said.

His Bayelsa United counterpart, Meremu Okara, praised his players for executing their game plan, describing the point as a good one for his team.

“I know that Enyimba have experienced players and have always been a good team but it is a good result for us to have picked a point against a good team like Enyimba.

“It would have been difficult for us to beat them, even though the chance came for us to wrap up the game. But a draw is still a good result for us,” Okara said.

He gave assurance that his team would do everything possible to escape relegation.

The coach said the result in Aba showed that his team had the capacity to retain their top league status.

“Let’s see how we get over Shooting Stars in our next match, because that may determine our fate of escaping relegation on the final day of the league,” Okara said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Enyimba occupy third position with 60 points, while Bayelsa United rose to the 16th position with 44 points after 36 matches.

Bayelsa could still be relegated to the Nigeria National League (NNL) as they are being trailed by Sporting Lagos and Doma United, who occupy the 17th and 18th positions respectively with 43 points apiece.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

WC Qualifier: Aba fans predict Super Eagles win over S’Africa

    Qualifier
    By Nicholas Obisike
Aba (Abia) June 6, 2024 (NAN) A cross-section of football enthusiasts in Aba has said that they expect a big win from the Super Eagles against the visiting Bafana Bafana of South Africans on Friday in the ongoing World Cup qualifier.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Super Eagles will on Friday, in group C, play host to South Africa’s national football team, inside the Godswill Akpabio Stadium Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

Speaking in an interview, Ikechukwu Okoro, an Enyimba International FC of Aba supporter, predicted “nothing less than 2-0” against the visitors.

Okoro said he was confident in the Eagles’ team, “due to the calibre of players invited to camp”.

According to him, the squad is made up of youths with experience and talents.

“This is the kind of selection we have been yearning for because all these things have a role to play in football as an action game.

“We need to give the young players a chance and to utilise the third force in a game of this nature and in that regard expose them to high profile matches,” he said.

Coach Godwin Uduma of United Academy FC of Aba said he was expecting nothing less than a win from the Eagles.

“I am expecting the Eagles to win the match to raise their hope of going to the Mundial because their position at the moment is not encouraging.

“I trust coach Finidi George and I believe that he has the capacity to deliver the needed result.

“My humble advise to the team is to play the match as if it was their final because there are no more pushover teams in African football,” Uduma said.

Also, Pius Ogadimma expressed satisfaction with the coach’s selection and urged him to give the home-based players a chance to play.

“Our first target should be to qualify for the World Cup but in doing that, we should also develop players who have long time to stay in the team,” he said

Another football enthusiast, Maureen Onyekwere, warned the players not to underestimate their opponent and recalled how Ghana denied Nigeria World Cup slot in the last edition.

She said that all that mattered in the match was a win, notwithstanding the scoreline.

He, however, urged the team to score as many goals as possible “because goals may count on the final day”.

NAN reports that Nigeria occupy third position in the group with two points, while South Africa occupy second position with three points, after two matches, respectively.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng.com)

  • Group implements early child learning programme to support education

    Education

    By Nicholas Obisike

Aba (Abia) June 4, 2024 (NAN) The Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA) has commenced the implementation of Early Child Learning Advancement Programme (E-CLAP) in support of primary education in Abia.

The Coordinator of the group for the South-East, Mrs Eunice Egbuna, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Aba on Tuesday.

She said that the programme was sponsored by Sterling Bank, through its Education Support outlet, Sterling One Foundation, which engaged CSACEFA to implement the programme in Abia.

Egbuna said that the programme, designed to last for eight months, would commence at Umuola Central School, Aba.

She said that the programme would focus on the education of children in their first three years in the primary school (Basic 1-3) with emphasis on the use of mother tongue in educating them.

“This is with the belief that mother tongue helps to impact lasting knowledge on the children and help them to learn faster.

“In addition, it focuses on employment of new techniques, well-tailored technology, application of non-formal education curriculum and innovative resource materials in the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy.

“The programme also promotes safe space application in the teaching and learning environments as well as recourse to the rights of the learner,” Egbuna said.

She said that the programme would be more beneficial to children in the rural areas and conflict-prone environments, who always lag behind academically for the lack of exposure and concentration.

“Because of that, their first three years in the primary school is punctuated by a lot of struggles to adjust to new environment, which often lead to the lack of concentration and difficulty in learning.

“This programme, therefore, aims at injecting the use of technologies, such as audio-visual materials, non-formal education curriculum and other innovations.

According to her, the programme also aims at the injection of resource materials to sustain their interest and improve their learning ability in literacy and numeracy,” Egbuna said.

She opined that by the end of the whole exercise, a good number of beneficiaries would have been impacted on to the level of being able to show mastery of reading and writing.

“They will all do better in calculation within their scope in basic four to six, and to achieve all these, teachers of the early grade pupils will be trained to adapt to this new trend.

“They will be monitored after the training to access how well or otherwise they are doing in the application of the learning, as the pupils’ learning outcome will also be monitored,” she said.

Egbuna said that Umuola Central School, Aba, had been chosen as the pilot school and that the outcome of the project would determine its extension to other schools in Abia.

She urged parents to support their children in learning the new learning technology and the juxtaposition of formal and non-formal curriculum in the school.

This, she said, would help the children to develop interest in skills of their choice.

NAN reports that an interactive session was also organised for the parents of the pupils, who commended the organisers and sponsors of the programme.

They described it as a laudable initiative. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
