  • JGSG directs LG chairmen to handover as tenures expires

    Dutse, June 28, 2024 (NAN) The Jigawa Government has directed all the Directors, Administration and General Service (DAGS) in the 27 local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state to take over the affairs of their respective LGAs.

    This is contained in a statement in Dutse on Friday by Mr Najib Umar, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Ministry for Local Government and Community Development.

    Umar noted that the directive followed the expiration of the tenure of the local government elected officials.

    He added that all other appointed officials including; secretaries, supervisory councillors, special advisers and assistants of all the 27 LGAs, are equally relieved of their appointments.

    “Following the expiration of the tenure of Local Government elected officials, the Jigawa State Ministry for Local Government and Community Development has directed the Directors Administration and General Services (DAGs) of all the 27 LGAs to take over the affairs of administration of the Local Government from today, June 28, 2024.

    “Therefore, all appointed officials, including Secretaries, Supervisory Councillors, Special Advisers and Assistants of all the Local Government Councils are equally relieved of their appointments,” Umar said.

    He quoted the Commissioner for Local Government and Community Development, Mr Ahmad Garba, who spoke on behalf of Gov. Umar Namadi as congratulating the outgoing officials on the successful conduct of their tenures.

    The PRO added that the commissioner also thanked them for their immense contributions to the development of their respective areas and the state in general.

    According to him, the commissioner has directed them to hand over all governments’ belongings in their possession immediately.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC), had announced the postponement of the local government elections in the state earlier scheduled to hold in June 2024 to June 2025. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Dutse, June 28, 2024 (NAN)The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says no fewer than 19 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Jigawa state fall within the high and moderate flood risk areas.

    Hajiya Zaubaida Umar, the Director-General of the NEMA, stated this during the 2024 Downscaling and Sensitization of Flood Early Warning Strategies for Early Actions in Dutse.

    This, she said, is according to the Nigeria Hydrological Agency’s (NIHSA) 2024 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO).

    Umar, represented by Dr Nura Abdullahi, the Coordinator of NEMA Kano Territorial Office, listed the affected LGAs as Kaugama, Hadejia, Auyo, Ringim, Taura, Miga, Jahun, Guri, Kirikasamma, Malammadori, Gumel, Gwaram, Dutse, Birniwa, Kiyawa, Kafinhausa, Suletankarkar, Babura and Maigatari.

    “These LGAs are already listed  on the earlier NEMA communication to the government of Jigawa.

    “According, I call for support in this initiative of downscaling flood early warning and risk mitigation to the grassroots,” Umar said.

    She stressed that the management of disaster risk in contemporary times hinges on community wide participation.

    “As we always emphasise, disaster management is everybody’s business, therefore we must work together to safeguard communities at risk, protect critical infrastructure and support uninterrupted socio-economic activities in Jigawa state,” she added.

    Umar further expressed hope that the gesture will a long way in reducing the impact of annual recurring floods and safeguard the private and communal livelihoods of the people of the state.

    According to her, the gesture is also a guaranteed path of driving socio-economic growth and development, which is in line with the renewed hope agenda of the Federal Government.

    Responding, Gov. Umar Namadi, said the state government has already taken proactive measures to reduce the impact of the flood across the state.

    Namadi, represented by his Deputy, Mr Aminu Usman, assured of his administration’s commitment to continue to safeguard the lives and property of people of the state.

    In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr Aliyu Mairiga, noted that the event highlights the urgent need for effective and proactive measures to mitigate the risks and enhance resilience.

    “In the past, we’ve witnessed the devastating impacts of floods on our communities, infrastructure and economy. The flood of 2022 is still fresh in our memories.

    “NEMA’s implementation of the redefined 2024 early warning strategies is tailored to the needs and vulnerabilities of our state.

    “We recognise the privilege to have been picked from a larger group as a start point of this sensitization,” Mairiga said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Dutse, June 27, 2024 (NAN) National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Jigawa Command, says it has successfully secured 185 convictions in the last one year.
    NDLEA Commander in the state, Mr Musa Maina, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Thursday, in commemoration of the 2024 United Nations’ Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
    Maina said those convicted were among the 426 suspects arrested by the agency from across the state between July 2023 and June 2024.
    The commander said that a total of 526.29 kilograms of assorted illicit drugs, including cannabis and other psychotropic substances, were also seized by the agency during the period under review.
    The commander further stated that more than 200 drug users among the arrested suspects were counselled and rehabilitated by the Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) unit of the command.
    He commended traditional and religious institutions as well as the state government for their support and cooperation to the agency in its fight against drug abuse.
    Maina urged residents of the state to continue to join hands with the agency to fight the menace. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Dutse, June 27, 2024 (NAN) Three persons were confirmed injured when farmers and herders clashed around Baranda forest in Kiyawa Local Government Area of Jigawa, the state Police Command confirmed on Thursday.

    “We received the information about the incident on Tuesday, at about 2:15 pm,” DSP Lawal Shiisu, the Police Public Relations Officer(PPRO), said in a statement.

    “On receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Kiyawa Division, alongside his patrol team, rushed to the scene.

    The team included Kiyawa Local Government officials, Chairmen of Kautal Hore and Miyetti Allah, Association of Farmers of Nigeria (AFAN), and Village Heads of the four affected communities.

    “While dialogue was ongoing among the critical stakeholders, the Police team seized the opportunity to identify three injured victims and rescued six others who were about to be attacked,” he said.

    The PPRO added that the victims were rushed to the hospital where they were treated and discharged.

    According to him, no arrest was made in connection with the incident in order to avoid further chaos.

    Shiisu, however, said that two of the leaders of the herders were identified and would be invited by the Police.

    He said preliminary investigation had revealed that the herders acted on a misleading information which suggested that the state government had revoked farmlands within the forest reserve that were allocated for farming activities.

    The PPRO stated that normalcy had been restored in the affected villages, while patrol had been intensified to avert further breach of peace.

    NAN recalls that on May 27, five farmers were injured in a similar incident at Hayin Kogi forest in Birnin-Kudu Local Government Area. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Dutse, June 20, 2024 (NAN) Jigawa State House of Assembly has lifted the suspension of four  council chairmen and told them to resume their official duties.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the affected chairmen are Bappa Shinge of Auyo Local Government Area (LGA), Bala Usman-Chamo of Dutse LGA, Ahmed Rufa’i of Gumel LGA and Shehu Sule-Udi of Ringim LGA.

    The chairmen were suspended by the House on March 6, over alleged misconduct, negligence and injudicious use of public funds found by its Committee on Local Government during its oversight visit to the their respective LGAs.

    The House then set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the suspended council chairmen.

    Mr Aminu Zakari, the Acting Chairman of the  committee, while presenting its report, listed 11 findings/observations during its investigation.

    Zakari said that the committee carried out a careful review of documents before it, including a consultant’s report on each of the four local governments.

    He said it also considered the documents submitted by the suspended council chairmen in defence of the accusations against them and their pleas.

    Zakari said that the committee came up with 11 recommendations.

    He said that one of the recommendations was to issue a stern warning to the affected chairmen to desist from any act unethical or unbecoming of holder of the office in both administrative and financial dealings.

    “That this Honourable House should graciously consider the pleas of the suspended council chairmen.

    “That the suspension placed against the following council chairmen: Bappa Shinge -Auyo LG, Bala Usman-Chamo – Dutse LG, Ahmed Rufa’i – Gumel and Shehu Sule-Udi -Ringim LG, be lifted and that they should resume their duties as the chairmen of their respective LGs,” Zakari said.

    Consequent upon the resolution of the Assembly through voting, the Speaker, Mr Haruna Aliyu, recalled the four chairmen to resume office with immediate effect.

    Reacting on behalf of the chairmen, Usman-Chamo of Dutse LG commended the lawmakers for the gesture.

    He thanked their supporters and well wishers for their solidarity.

    Usman-Chamo, who was the state’s ALGON chairman before his suspension, added: “Not only four of us, but all 27 LGs will continue to do our best in serving our people”. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Police arrest man for car theft in Jigawa

    Dutse, June 18, 2024 (NAN) The Police in Jigawa have arrested a 43-year-old man for allegedly stealing a Honda CRV in Gwaram Local Government Area of the state.

    According to a statement by DSP Lawan Shiisu, the Police Public Relations Officer in Dutse on Tuesday, the suspect, whose name was not disclosed, was apprehended in Gwaram town after stealing the Honda CRV in Kano State.

    Shiisu said that the suspect, a resident of BUK quarters in Kumbotso LGA of Kano, was intercepted with the stolen Honda CRV bearing registration number DKD 10 AG while enroute to Maiduguri.

    “The arrest came after police received a report from Mr Abba Yahya of Gano town, Dawakin Kudu LGA, Kano State, regarding the theft of his vehicle,” Shiisu said.

    He further said, “Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Gwaram Division and a patrol team mounted a stop and search along Sara-Darazo road, leading to the interception of the vehicle and subsequent arrest of the 43-year-old suspect.”

    Shiisu noted that both the suspect and the stolen vehicle were taken into custody for preliminary investigation and would be transferred to the Kano Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Mr Ahmadu Abdullahi, commended the officers for their diligence in apprehending the suspect and urged them to sustain the effort,” Shiisu added.

    Abdullahi also appealed to residents to collaborate with the police by reporting any suspicious activities promptly to ensure the security of lives and property in the state. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Federal University, Dutse gets NUC’s accreditation for 10 programmes

    Dutse, June 18, 2024 (NAN) National Universities Commission (NUC) has given accreditation status to 10 programmes at Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa.
    This is contained in statement issued by the Spokesperson for the university, Alhaji Abdullahi Yahaya, on Tuesday in Dutse.
    Yahaya said that the accreditation approval for the programmes was communicated to the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulkarim Mohammed, in a letter signed by the NUC’s acting Director of Accreditation, Mr Abraham Chundusu.
    According to him, the programmes with full accreditation include: Master in Public Policy and Administration, Fisheries, English, Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Criminology and Security Studies and Political Science, while Cyber Security was given an interim accreditation.
    The vice-chancellor thanked the commission for the accreditation of the programmes.
    Mohammed also commended the management and staff members of the university for making the positive results possible.
    He said that all hands must be on the deck to ensure that the standard attained was maintained. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Sallah: FRSC warns against underage driving in Jigawa

    Dutse, June 15, 2024 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Command in Jigawa has advised parents not to allow their underage children to drive vehicles before, during and after Eid-el-Kabir period.

    The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mr Usman Ibrahim, gave the warning on Saturday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse.

    Ibrahim said the advice became necessary considering the accidents, destruction of lives and property associated with driving by underage children in the state.

    He said that the Corps would continue to educate the parents and put measures in place to reduce the rate of accidents usually recorded during festive period.

    “We’ve never encouraged underage driving because you must be above 18 years to be licensed to drive. So, If we apprehend anyone below that age, we shall apply the appropriate punishment.

    “I want to advise parents that there are proper ways to license their wards to enable them drive, and they must be 18 years of age, and through the normal processes, that’s driving school and licensing.

    “So, anyone who drives without the appropriate age and valid license will be dealt with accordingly,” he said.

    The sector commander assured the public that the command would ensure strict compliance with all traffic laws, adding that defaulters would be penalised.

    According to him, the command has taken all necessary measures to ensure an accident-free before, during and after sallah in the state. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Eid-el-Kabir: FRSC deploys 430 personnel, 9 vehicles in Jigawa

    Dutse, June 15, 2024 (NAN) The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Jigawa Command, has deployed 430 personnel and nine vehicles, including four ambulances to ensure crash-free Eid-el-Kabir celebration in the state.

    The FRCS Sector Commander in Jigawa, Mr Usman Ibrahim, made this known while announcing the commencement of a Special Salah Operations in Dutse on Saturday.

    Ibrahim told newsmen that deployment of both personnel and vehicles was part of the command’s proactive measures to reduce road crashes across the state throughout the Salah celebration.

    He explained that the objective of the special operations was to ensure significant reduction in the number of traffic crashes, fatalities, and injuries.

    “It is also to ensure prompt response to accident scenes to evacuate victims and provide the needed help among other things.

    “The command will also carry out aggressive enforcement of traffic laws and regulations, including Mobile Courts to prosecute violators of traffic laws.

    Ibrahim said that the FRSC would prosecute motorists for over-speeding, dangerous driving, wrongful overtaking, lane indiscipline, route violation, and road obstruction.

    Other offences, he said, would include loading of trailers with passengers and illegal use of spy number plates.

    He, therefore, called on drivers and other road users across the state to cooperate with the command towards a successful Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

    While wishing residents an accident-free celebration, Ibrahim assured motorists of FRSC’s commitment to entrenching sanity on all major roads and highways in the state. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Dutse, July 14, 2023 (NAN) The Jigawa Government has recruited 300 Community-Based Animal Health Workers (CAHWs) in the state.

    Speaking at the inauguration  in Dutse, Gov. Umar Namadi said the workers are expected to provide mobile veterinary clinic services across the nooks and crannies of the state.

    He explained that the gesture also fits with of his administration’s development agenda of achieving sustained agricultural transformation in the state.

    The governor added that the beneficiaries were trained to provide mobile veterinary services for the purpose of controlling and preventing the spread of animal diseases across the 287 wards in the state.

    “Each of the 300 personnel will be provided with a motorcycle fully fitted with a medical toolbox, vaccination kits, drug box and other accessories for routine and emergency veterinary services.

    “The youths have also been licensed as veterinary service providers to effectively respond to animal disease incidences even in the remote and hard to reach locations to control and contain preventable animal diseases,” the governor said.

    According to him, the initiative is a component of the state government’s J-Agro Agricultural Extension Agents Programme, under which some 1,440 youths were enlisted to provide quality agricultural extension services to farmers.

    “The competitive advantages enjoyed by Jigawa state in agricultural sector goes beyond crop production to encompass livestock development.

    “We’ve also built on this through the goat breeding microcredit programme which has empowered thousands of women in the state,” Namadi said.

    He further stated that 1,640 women were recently empowered with three goats each under the programme in four LGAs.

    The governor assured that the programme would be sustained to reach the remaining 11 LGAs in the state.

    “Therefore, today’s inauguration of 300 mobile veterinary service providers is also part of our efforts to protect and develop the livestock population in the state,” the governor added.

    In her remarks, the President of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), Dr Aishatu Abubakar, commended the governor for the gesture.

    Abubakar, represented by Dr Helen Ego, the VCN’s Deputy Register, said the gesture will enhance food/feed safety and security in the state, as well as control massive migration of Nigerians out of the country, popularly called “Jakpa”.

    “You’ve taken the lead in putting Jigawa state on the global stage by supporting, promoting and empowering indigenes of the state with this initiative. This move of yours will enhance food/feed safety and security in Jigawa state.

    “This will help control the massive migration of Nigerians out of the country, brain drain rocking the entire nation because of insecurities and lack of enabling environment for performance, unemployment and various issues plaguing our nation,” Abubakar said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
