Police arrest driver attempting to escape with boss’ car

Lagos, June 29, 2024 (NAN) The Police Command in Lagos State has arrested a 36-year old man for allegedly attempting to run away with his boss’ car after dropping her off at the market.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.

Hundeyin said that the complainant, whose identity not disclosed, reported the theft of the car, a Lexus ES 350 with Reg. No., EXY 950 FZ, including her laptop, at the command at about 1.30 p.m. on Tuesday.

According to Hundeyin, the unnamed driver, allegedly drove away the boss’ car after dropping her off at Tejuosho Market, Yaba.

“On getting this report, police detectives trailed the suspect to shubiri road, Ojo where he was arrested and the car recovered.

“The suspect will be charged to court on the conclusion of the investigation,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Lagos, June 27, 2024 (NAN) The Certified Pension Institute of Nigeria (CPIN) has inducted the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Olukayode Egbetokun, as an Honorary Fellow of the institute.

Egbetokun’s induction took place during the institute’s 2024 Investiture/Induction Ceremony of new Fellows and Associates, which held on Thursday in Lagos.

The theme for the event was: “20 years of contributory pension scheme in Nigeria: Challenges and the way forward”.

The I-G, who was represented by the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, commended the institute for the honour, assuring of his commitment to improving the pension welfare of the force.

Egbetokun promised to contribute his quota to the development of the institute, while leveraging  the fellowship to improve the pension of  police personnel.

The President and Chairman, Council of CIPN, Alhaji Umaru Kwairanga, said they would continue to improve on  professionalism in order to meet the yearnings of Nigerians,as well as enhance and promote administration of pension in Nigeria.

Justice

Lagos, June 28, 2024 (NAN) The police in Lagos have  given assurance that justice will be served in the alleged  killing of a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Obalende Branch, by a policeman.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the auditor of NURTW, Obalende Branch, Toheeb Eniafe, was allegedly shot dead by  a policeman at an NNPC Filling Station at Obalende on May 1.

He was allegedly killed while attempting to buy fuel.

Fayoade gave the assurance of fairness and objective in investigation into the case, on Friday.

He reacted to an allegation,  by the bereaved  family, of a police cover-up.

According to the CP, the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Panti,  Yaba, is handling the case.

“All those involved will be prosecuted.

“The Homicide Department of the State CID is investigating the case. The police cannot cover up the suspects.

“Everyone involved in the shooting will be brought to book,” the commissioner said.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, had in a statement on May 2, said that the policeman, who allegedly shot the deceased, had been identified.

He said: “The person behind the shooting has been identified as a policeman serving at Special Protection Unit Base 17, Lion Building, Lagos.

“Investigation is still ongoing, and further findings will be made available.”

Eniafe’s family had earlier petitioned the inspector-general of police over alleged delay in concluding  investigation into the case as well as prosecution of suspects.

The family also addressed a news conference on Thursday alleging police cover-up.

Mr Muritala Eniafe, the elder brother of the deceased, who spoke on behalf of the family, said that though the police  promised justice,  alleged slow pace of investigation into the case suggested a cover-up.

According to him, he was invited to the CID and was assured that police were investigating the case.

The Chairman of  NURTW, Obalende Branch, Mr Wale Giwa,  said at the news conference that the union was in support of the family’s demand for timely justice. (NAN) wwww.nannews.ng

Police probe alleged killing of Inspector by Naval officers

Lagos, June 23, 2024 (NAN) The Police Command in Lagos State says it has begun investigation into the alleged killing of a police Inspector by some Naval officers at Okokomaiko area of Ojo.
The Spokesperson for the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.
Hundeyin said that report on the incident was received at the Okokomaiko police station around 4.30 p.m. on Saturday from some members of the public.
He said the report revealed that some policemen, who were on routine patrol along Igbo-Elerin, tried to impound a motorcycle riding against traffic at the Beno filling station.
The spokesperson said that two men on the motorcycle in mufti, who claimed to be Naval officers, resisted arrest and attacked the policemen.
“Other Naval personnel in uniform arrived at the scene and supported their colleagues in the attack.
“It was when one Inspector (name not given) slumped and was unconscious, that the Naval personnel escaped from the scene.
“The inspector was rescued and rushed to an hospital in the area, where he was confirmed dead.
“The body has been deposited at the Idi-Araba Mortuary, Yaba, for autopsy, while investigation is ongoing,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Police detain 2 officers over illegal duty, civilian’s death

Lagos, June 22, 2024 (NAN) The Lagos State Police Command has detained two police officers who went on an illegal duty, in which a civilian lost his life.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, made this known in a statement on Saturday.

Hundeyin said that the two officers, whose names and ranks were not given, were members of the State Taskforce.

He said that the officers went on the illegal operation on Wednesday, in the company of some civilians.

According to Hundeyin, the illegal team came under attack from motorcycle riders, resulting in the death of one of the civilians.

“While disciplinary actions have commenced on the already detained police officers, search is on for their civilian accomplices.

“Investigations have commenced to identify, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of this dastardly act,” he said. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

Traffic Law: Lagos CP warns commercial bus, tricycle operators

Lagos, June 21, 2024 (NAN) The Commissioner of Police (CP) in Lagos State, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, has vowed to prosecute commercial bus and tricycle operators caught violating traffic laws in the state.

Fayoade said this on Friday while declaring open a one-day train-the -trainers’ workshop for Area Traffic Officers.

The training was organised by the Global Transport Policy Training Academy (GTP), in collaboration with the Police Command in Lagos.

The theme of the training was: “Improving Traffic Policing: Leveraging on Emotional intelligence Skills”.

Fayoade, represented by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Area F Ikeja, Mr Paul Okafor, expressed concern about the lawlessness of commercial bus and tricycle operators on Lagos roads.

The CP advised road users to always obey and respect traffic officers, saying they were working for the good interest of all in Lagos state.

He commended the organisers of the training programme, pointing out that the theme was apt and showed their good thoughts towards people in Lagos State.

According to Fayoade, the training will go a long way in assisting the police in traffic management.

The Chairman/Chief Consultant, GTP, Mr Segun Musa, said the purpose of the training was to advance and reshape the traffic situation in Lagos State.

He said the theme: “Improving Traffic Policing: Leveraging on Emotional Intelligence Skills”, was pivotal to ensuring a wholesome engagement of the public.

“Beyond infrastructural deficit, we have the human element crucial to order and civility. This is where Emotional Intelligence is crucial.

“Experts have maintained that if order is not maintained in terms of traffic-related issues, by 2030, Lagos would be losing about $21 billion (about N31.5 trillion) monthly.

“Lagos needs a traffic system that is effective and efficient. As you all know, Lagos presently accommodates at least 40 per cent of the total registered vehicles in Nigeria, with an estimated population of 20 million people,” he said.

Musa said that the train-the-trainer format would enable Area Traffic Officers to train Divisional Traffic Officers for broader impact. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

Police arrest airport taxi passenger for attempted car snatching

Lagos, June 19, 2024 (NAN) The Police Command in Lagos State say it has arrested a 35-year old passenger, who attempted to snatch an airport taxi from it’s driver.

Mr  Benjamin Hundeyin, Spokesperson of the command confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

Hundeyin said that the case was reported to the Alausa Police Division on June 11 at about 1:40 a.m., by the taxi driver.

He explained  that the driver said that at about 1:20 a.m., on June 11, while on driving service at Chevron area of Ajah, he was stopped by the suspect, pretending to be a passenger.

He quoted the taxi driver as saying that the suspect requested that he  took him to the Shrine in Agidigbi, Alausa area of Ikeja, and on conclusion on the fare, they both started the journey to the destination.

“On getting to the Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, by 7UP Alausa Ikeja, the suspect, who was sitting beside him suddenly brought out a knife from his bag and attacked him in an attempt to snatch his Toyota Camry car.

“In the process, the driver sustained a deep knife cut on his hand while trying to struggle with the suspect.

“He quickly raised an alarm, where some good Nigerians came to his rescue, while the suspect took to his heels.

”However, after a hot chase, he was later arrested by Anti-Crime team of Alausa police division,” he  said.

Hundeyin said that the suspect was taken to the station with the car as exhibit, while investigation was ongoing.

He said in another development, a 28-year old man, who had been parading himself as military personnel with the uniform of his friend serving in Maiduguri, was arrested for impersonation.

Hundeyin said that the fake soldier was arrested last Friday at about 5:45 p.m., by operatives from Ilemba Hausa Division, while on Surveillance patrol at Jinadu Street, Ajangbadi.

He said that the suspect was fully dressed in complete army camouflage uniform riding a black unregistered motorcycle when he was arrested.

The spokesperson said that on sighting the policemen, the suspect abandoned the motorcycle and took to his heels but the officers gave him a chase and arrested him.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is not a soldier and the army camouflage uniform belongs to his friend, who is a military personnel serving in Maiduguri,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Altercation

Lagos, June 18, 2024 (NAN) The Police Command in Lagos, says, a private security guard, Yusuf Akadogo, has lost his life after being allegedly stabbed during a minor altercation.

Confirming the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that the deceased security guard was attacked by an Okada rider, currently at large.

Hundeyin stated that the incident occurred on Thursday at the Idi-Araba area of the state.

“On that fateful day, around 9:20 p.m., the police received a distress call from a concerned community member regarding a disturbance at Igbira Road, Idi-Araba,” Hundeyin said.

He also said that police operatives swiftly responded to the scene, where an eyewitness provided an account of the events.

According to a witness, the deceased security guard intervened in a minor altercation between the Okada rider and another individual.

“Unexpectedly, the motorcycle rider, whose identity is withheld, allegedly turned his aggression towards the security guard and stabbed him in the stomach with a knife.

“The victim was rushed to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, for urgent medical attention but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

“The suspect fled the scene immediately after the attack, and the area is currently under surveillance as efforts to apprehend him are ongoing,” he said.

In a separate incident, Hundeyin said that police had arrested four men who allegedly broke into a musical instrument warehouse in the Ikota area of the state.

The spokesperson said that the suspects were arrested on June 11, at about 4.30 p.m. following a reported case of theft by the owner of a warehouse.

Hundeyin said that the police had received a report from Idi-Oro Mushin, that two young men (names withheld), were caught with two big speakers allegedly stolen from the warehouse.

Hundeyin said that the businessman had reportedly said goods worth millions of Naira had been stolen from the warehouse.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that a man called Pastor, now at large, conspired with the suspects on June 10, at about 11.30 p.m.

“They had driven into a warehouse in the Okota area with a mini truck vehicle with which they carted away their loot.

“The 25-year-old security man and 33-year-old supervisor in possession of the warehouse keys were later arrested, ” he said.

Hundeyin, however, said that the suspected Pastor, who resides in Oshodi, fled before the arrival of the police.

He said that efforts were on to apprehend the suspect  and recover the stolen items, while investigations into both incidents continue. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

Lagos, June 14, 2024 (NAN) The Lagos State Government has demolished some street gates, security post and fences of houses constructed on drainage channels and canals in Okota area of the state.

The operation was carried out on Friday by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) and Ministry for Environment, led by Corps Marshall, Maj. Olaniyi Cole rtd.

A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who monitored the exercise reports that the operation was carried out at Liberty, Paris, Victory and Hosanna Goodness Estates, all located in Okota area.

NAN observed that some  street gates, house fences, including security post were allegedly built on drainage channels and canals.

It  was also observed that a security post’s toilet was constructed on a drainage, as well as many illegal structures, including Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) houses with their shrines built close to a major canal in the area.

Cole said that some residents of the estates petitioned the Commissioner for Environment on the incessant flooding they always faced once it rained  due to the blockage of the canals and drainages by the illegal structures.

Cole said they were given the order to pull down all illegal structures, stressing that the affected estates and houses were given 48 hours to remove the structures.

He said that for every land approved by the government, the construction of the fence must have 10 metres distance to/from the canal and drainage.

Mr Adekoya Adedeji, from the Drainage Office, Lagos State Ministry for Environment, linked the flooding situation in many parts of the state to human activities.

Adedeji said for the operation on Friday, some people deliberately blocked the waterways by building fences, shanties and houses on the way.

“People must have understanding that all that government is doing is for the interest of all.

“As government, we will not rest on our effort to ensure that all illegal structures on canals, drainages and other public ways responsible for flooding are cleared for a flood free Lagos,” he said.

Some residents of the estates who spoke with NAN commended the government for the bold step to clear the illegal structures.

Mr Austin Odinaka, a resident, said the street gate constructed around his street always caused flooding, causing them to take longer journey out of the estate.

Another resident, simply identified as Sunny, said they tried to intervene when they were constructing some street gates, but they were ignored by the initiators of the construction.

Sunny, however, blamed some Lagos State Government Officials and traditional ruler of the area, who collected money and allowed the illegal structures to be constructed.

A victim, whose illegal structure was marked for demolition along the canal, Mrs Nancy Okafor, said she purchased the land from one Mr Odo Chibuzor, at the sum of N536,000, with receipt given to the Corps Marshall as evidence. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

Lagos, June 14, 2024 (NAN) The wife of the Inspector-General of Police, Mrs Elizabeth Egbetokun, has presented scholarships and health insurance to 21 children and widows of late officers in Lagos State.

Egbetokun, who is also the President, Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), made the presentation on Thursday to the beneficiaries as part of her two-day working visit to the Lagos Police Command.

She commended the wife of the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mrs Adekemi Fayoade, the initiator of the scholarship and health insurance.

The POWA President said that the initiatives would go a long way to assist the children and widows of  late officers who died in the course of duty.

For Mrs Adekemi Fayoade, the initiatives were to empower the children and widows of late officers to continue their education, and for the growth and wellness of their families.

Fayoade, also the Chairperson of POWA in Lagos State, pointed out that, though she inherited the programme from the last Chairperson, Mrs Idowu Owohunwa, she decided to continue the project for the betterment of members.

She said POWA was committed to supporting the families of late officers and others in dire need of support.

“Health and wellness, which promote physical and mental wellness of police officers are of priority.

“The introduction of health insurance programme for widows will alleviate the difficulties encountered in having access to affordable health care

“The skills development workshop is to equip widows and police wives with assistance in their businesses. This will go a long way to assist the family,” she said.

Gov. Babatunde Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State commended POWA for the health insurance and scholarships for children of late police officers
