    Schools

    By Rita Iliya

Minna, June 29, 2024 (NAN) Sen. Shehu Sani has decried the poor state of public schools in the north of Nigeria and expressed fears of an imminent collapse if the situation continued.

He spoke during the 40th anniversary of Government Science College, Kagara, organised by the Kagara Old Boys Association (KAGOBA), Class of 1984 in Minna on Saturday.

Sani recalled that public schools used to be the best as they had teachers and lecturers from within and outside of the country.

“It is unfortunate that today, some of the public schools that produced the best people in the history of this country, are not what they used to be.

“In our days in schools, we had teachers from Pakistan, Indian, Canada and Egypt. Those teachers produced the Professors, Doctors, Engineers, Senators, captains of industries and Army Generals, among others.

“What public schools have become today is a disaster. The north must take education seriously.”

The former lawmaker lamented that the activities of bandits and terrorists had destroyed all educational fabrics in northern Nigeria.

Sani expressed dismay that GSC Kagara that had produced some of the best professionals in the country was now desolate and deserted due to the bandits’ attack where students were abducted.

He, however, supported the relocation of the school to Minna for the meantime, adding that security has improved under the President Bola Tinubu led-administration.

The former senator said that there was evidence that many top terrorists’ commanders had been eliminated across the country.

Earlier in his welcome address, Alhaji Jafar Tukur, Chairman of KAGOBA, said the college, established 1968,  started operation in Minna between 1967 and 1968, and was later moved to Kagara in 1973.

Tukur, represented by Dr Philip Ibrahim, Vice Chairman, said the college was unique in the history of Niger.

Tukur described as ‘unfortunate’, the current condition of the school, adding that for 10 years,   KAGOBA’s executives were responsible for the procurement of furniture for the students to write WAEC in the school.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that gunmen had, in February, 2021 abducted 27 students, three staff and 12 family members from the college.

The then Governor, Sani Bello, thereafter directed that all boarding schools in Rafi, Shiroro and Munya Local Governments be closed down and, since then, the school has remained closed. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Minna, June 26, 2024 (NAN)  Mr Michael Ohiani, Director-General of Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC),  says Nigeria requires N348 trillion to address infrastructure deficit in the country.

He said this during a presentation at the 2nd Quarter 2024 Nigeria PublicPrivate Partnership Network (NPPN) meeting in Minna on Wednesday.

The theme of the meeting was ‘Using PPPs in Infrastructure Delivery in the States to ensure National Food Security and Economic Growth’.

Ohiani disclosed that going by the Medium-Term Development Plan, the country required over N348.1 trillion investment in infrastructure.

He said the private sector would be able to provide the chunk of this investment to the tune of about N298.3 trillion while the sub-national governments can provide N49.7 trillion.

“This goes to show the importance of the private sector in infrastructure development,”  Ohiani said.

He added that the revised National Infrastructure Investment Master Plan for the next 23 years envisaged that the country would require $2.2 trillion to bridge the infrastructure deficit in the country.

Ohiani said the various options available through which the government can raise funds were through borrowing, further repatriation of national funds and seeking further foreign intervention.

Other options, he added were to raise more bonds, Sukuk, tax credit schemes, Public-Private Partnership (PPP), both through solicited and unsolicited proposals.

In his keynote address, Sen. George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), commended state Governors for embracing the benefits and opportunities of PPP as an alternative procurement method.

Akume, represented by Simon Tyungu, a Director in his Office, said the meeting was timely given the infrastructure deficit in the country and government’s efforts to invest in renewal and modernisation.

In his remarks, Gov. Umaru Bago, said his administration was focusing on farming, thereby taking advantage of the vast arable land in the state.

Bago, represented by Alhaji Abubakar Salisu, Head of Service, added that the state would continue to partner with the Federal Government and international agencies in respect of agricultural development. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Niger: Stakeholders brainstorm on farmer-friendly insurance policies

    By Rita Iliya

Minna, June 13, 2024 (NAN) Stakeholders have come together to brainstorm on ways insurance firms can provide friendly insurance policies for farmers to avoid total losses after natural disasters.

Dr Ken Ukaoha, President, National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS), said this during the NANTS/AGRA stakeholders workshop on “Enhancing Agricultural Resilience through Farmer-centric Insurance Products’, in Minna on Thursday.
    .
The theme of the workshop was” Improving farmers’ Resilience and Upscaling Productivity, Incomes, and Livelihood in Rice, Maize, Soyabean, Cowpea and Vegetable Value Chain in Niger’.

Ukaoha explained that the ongoing agricultural revolution by the Niger government necessitated the critical stakeholders to come together to brainstorm on how to protect the government and farmers’ investment.

“Niger Governor has embarked on massive investments in agriculture with the cultivation of 10,000 hectares in each 25 local government areas.

“Therefore, for the government and farmers to reap from their investments, they must be insured against natural disasters, this will also bring about food security.

In his remarks, Dr Mattew Ahmed, Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Agriculture, described the workshop “as apt”, saying that the state government was investing about N50 billion in agriculture in the wet season.

Ahmed disclosed that only 2 per cent of the farmers in Niger were insuring their crops and called on them  to key into the insurance policy.

Similarly, Mr Godswill Agwuyi, representative of Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), said the organisation was working to improve the lives of smallholder farmers through access to credits and finance.

Also, Malam Idris Abini, the Chairman of Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN) in Niger, disclosed that its members benefited N16 million from an insurance firm in 2018 and 2019.
