  • NDLEA urges Nigerians to invest in hard drug prevention

    Sango-Ota (Ogun), June 28, 2024 (NAN) The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has advised Nigerians to invest in hard drug prevention measures to create a drug-free society.

    Mrs Ibinabo Archie-Abia, Assistant Commander General, Narcotics, Directorate of Operations and General Investigation, Lagos, made this call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Ota, Ogun.

    This appeal was made in commemoration of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, celebrated globally on June 26.

    Archie-Abia urged corporate organisations to collaborate with the agency in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking by providing more aid, logistics and policies for prevention.

    She explained that hard drugs contribute to crimes such as domestic violence, terrorism, rape, kidnapping and armed robbery.

    Archie-Abia stressed that many social vices in the country were influenced by drug abuse.

    Archie-Abia advised Nigerians, particularly the youth, to avoid consuming drugs, saying that ‘it not only destroys lives but also distorts the national economy’.

    “We are looking forward to a drug-free society and a Nigeria with zero tolerance to drugs.

    “NDLEA has reduced the volume of drugs in circulation through its activities, making it difficult for people to get supplies,” she said.

    According to her, the nation is making progress in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

    She noted that the NDLEA has effectively stopped the entry and exit of various drugs through airports, seaports, land borders, and inter-city routes.

    Archie-Abia also encouraged Nigerians to assist children already hooked on drugs by bringing them to the NDLEA for help and treatment, while noting that the agency had the cheapest rehabilitation centers provided by the federal government.

    She urged youths to focus on their studies and embrace skills acquisition to improve their lives without resorting to drugs. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Sango-Ota (Ogun), June 28, 2024 (NAN) The Ogun Command of  the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said that 17 persons died in 16 road crashes during Eid-el Kabir celebration in the state.

    Mr Anthony Uga, Sector Commander of FRSC, gave the figure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Ota, Ogun.

    Uga said that 45 persons also sustained various degrees of injuries from the crashes.

    The sector commander said that most of the accidents were caused by excessive speed, dangerous driving, night travel and tyre burst, among others.

    “We are appealing to motorists to adhere to traffic rules and regulations to prevent unnecessary loss of life, especially during this rainy season.

    “In addition, they should exercise patience and reduce their speed to reduce disaster on our highway,”he said.

    The sector commander said that the special patrol just concluded also helped to minimise road crashes, because the corps was able to check excesses of motorists.

    He said that FRSC would continue to sustain the special patrol, especially on Lagos-Ibadan expressway, and others part of the state to ensure that lives are safe on the road.(NAN)(www nannews.ng)

  • Man bags 2 years for collecting money under false pretence

    Sango-Ota (Ogun), June 26, 2024 (NAN) A Magistrates’ Court in Ota, Ogun has sentenced a 36-year-old man, Chukwuemzie Kingsley, to two years imprisonment for collecting N940,000 under false pretence.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.O.Fadairo, held on Wednesday that the prosecutor had proven the charges against the convict beyond all reasonable doubt.

    She, however, gave him an option of a fine of N100,000 to the two-year jail term.

    Fadairo also ordered the convict to return the sum of N940,000 to the complainant.

    The convict, whose address was not provided, had pleaded not guilty to the charges of stealing and obtaining money under false pretence.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp E.O.Adaraloye, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in February at Soji Fatuga Street, Temidire, Ota.

    Adaraloye said the convict collected N940,000 under the pretext of producing nylon for the complainant, Mr Collins Udeh.

    According to him, the defendant converted the money to his personal use, failing to deliver the consignment to the complainant as promised.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Avoid excessive speed, night travels to reduce crashes – FRSC

    Sango-Ota (Ogun), June 25, 2024 (NAN) The Ogun Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists to avoid excessive speed and night travels in order to reduce road crashes on the nation’s roads.

    The FRSC Sector Commander, Anthony Uga, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota on Tuesday.

    Uga was reacting to an accident that happened around 9.33 p.m. on Monday, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

    NAN recalls that seven of the 18 persons involved in the accident lost their lives, while the rest sustained injuries.

    The sector commander said the disaster could have been averted, if the driver of the Mazda bus had strictly adhered to an average speed limit.

    He attributed the cause of the incident to excessive speed as the bus driver rammed into a moving truck from the rear.

    “We are appealing to motorists to refrain from speeding and avoid night journeys because of poor visibility which sometimes leads to road crashes.

    “In addition, the passengers should not hesitate to report any erring driver found flouting traffic rules and regulations by calling 122 toll-free number,” Uga said.

    He also admonished motorists against reckless driving and wrongful overtaking, which often lead to crashes and loss of lives and propwrty. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Sango-Ota(Ogun), June 25,2024(NAN) A Magistrates’ Court in Oga, Ogun on Tuesday sentenced a 30-year-old woman,Motuntayo Obabiyi,to three years imprisonment for stealing N47,000 cash and  a wrist watch worth N16,000.
    Magistrate O.A.Onagoruwa, in his ruling, gave the woman  an option of N50,000 fine.
    Onagoruwa held that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt that Obabiyi was guilty of the charge preferred against her.
    The convict,whose address was not provided,had earlier pleaded not guilty to theft, ,assault and conspiracy.
    Earlier,the Prosecutor,Insp E.O.Adaraloye,told the court that the convict and others, at  large, committed the offences on July 22,2022, at about 3.00 a.m.at Plaza Phase 1,Ota.
    Adaraloye said that the Obabiyi and her accomplices, stole N47,000 cash and a wristwatch from the complainant, Victor Nnamezie.
    He said that the convict and her accomplice also assaulted the complainant.
     The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 338,351 and 516 of the Criminal Code,Laws of Ogun,2006.(NAN)

    Sango-Ota (Ogun), June 23, 2024 (NAN) The Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) on Sunday commenced palliative work at the Iyana-Ilogbo area on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

    Mr Aduroja Ariyo, Divisional Commander of TRACE in Owode-Ijako, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota that the palliative was to alleviate the suffering of the motorists.

    Ariyo said that the Corps Commander of TRACE, Prince Seni Ogunyemi, had directed the command to embark on the palliative work in order to reduce heavy traffic encountered by the road users.

    He explained that TRACE officers were filling the failed portion at Iyana-Ilogbo axis on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway with hard core gravel and stones.

    “We are here to do palliative work on the road to make sure it is motorable

    “This onerous task of making road passable for motorists was made possible through the assistance of Nigerian Founderies Limited Abestor, Dr Cynthia Abima, the Manager of the company.

    “Also, the Chairman, Tipper garage, Owode-Ijako, provided free trucks to transport gravel and stones provided by Nigerian Founderies Limited Abestor to Iyana-Ilogbo failed portion,” Ariyo said.

    He applauded the management of Nigerian Founderies Limited Abestor and leadership of Tipper Garage, Owode-Ijako, for the assistance toward ameliorating the sufferings of motorists.

    Ariyo appealed to other corporate organizations in providing such assistance, while urging the motoring public to abide by the traffic rules and regulations. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Prioritise production to stimulate economic growth – Economist advises FG

    Sango-Ota (Ogun) June 21, 2024(NAN) An economist, Prof. Evans Osabuohien, on Friday advised the Federal Government (FG) to prioritise production activities to step up the economic growth of the country.

    Osabuohien, Head of the Economics Department, Covenant University, Ota, speaking on likely solutions to the nation’s economic challenges, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

    NAN recalls that the Director-General, Debt Management Office (DMO), said on Thursday that the nation’s total public debt stock had hit N121.67 trillion in March.

    Osabuohien says as long as the country continues to borrow and buy without selling products, it will continue to incur more debts.

    According to him, if the country increasingly engages in expenditure without a corresponding increase in productive ventures, things will continue to go bad.

    “As long as we are not producing enough to sell, rather we keep buying and buying, our debt profile will continue to increase.

    “The FG needs to prioritise increased production and minimise expenditures, especially on imported materials not tied to production.

    “In addition, the country should reduce heavy dependency on imported goods to encourage production in the country,’’ he said.

    The economist urged the FG to address insecurity, banditry and the crisis between farmers and herders, adversely affecting farming activities.

    Osabuohien said farmers should be provided with cheaper inputs to boost farming activities in the country.

    He also emphasised the need to cut down on the cost of governance to improve capital projects. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Ex-ANAN president urges FG to stop fuel importation

    Sango-Ota (Ogun), June 20, 2024 (NAN) A financial expert, Dr Samuel Nzekwe, has advised the Federal Government to ensure that all government refineries are operational as a way of ending the importation of fuel into the country.

     

    Nzekwe, a former President of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ota.

     

    According to him, the importation of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly referred to as petrol, by the federal government is one of the major factors driving the nation’s inflation rate.

     

    “The federal government needs to redouble efforts to stop the exportation of crude oil and the importation of petrol by repairing all the refineries, as this is fueling hikes in the prices of goods and services.

     

    “If the country had not been importing petrol, we would have saved NPA charges, insurance costs, and the costs of producing petrol outside the country, ” he said.

     

    Nzekwe said that the cost of importing petrol into the country was on the high side since the Naira had been devalued.

     

    He added that petrol had a multiplier effect on the nation because virtually all sectors of the economy depend on it.

     

    The former ANAN president urged the government to tackle corruption to reduce sabotage in the petroleum sector.

     

    NAN reports that the country’s inflation rate increased from 33.69 per cent in April to 33.95 per cent in May. (NAN)

  • 2 docked for allegedly stealing cell phone valued N139,00

    Sango-Ota(Ogun), June 19, 2024(NAN) Two persons, Abdulateef Olasunkanmi and Sunday Morice, were on Wednesday, arraigned before an Ota Magistrates’ Court, Ogun, for allegedly stealing a cell phone valued N139,000.

    Olasunkanmi, 18 and Morice, 28, whose addresses were not given, are being charged with stealing, assault and conspiracy.

    The Prosecutor, Insp E.O. Adaraloye, told the court that the defendants and others now at large, committed the offences at about 11.05a.m on June 12, at Arobilaye, Ota.

    Adaraloye said that Olasunkanmi and Morice conspired to assault the complainant, Zinsu Joseph, by giving him fists of blows.

    He further said that during the assault, the defendants stole the complainant’s phone valued N139,000.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 390(9), 451 and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws, Ogun, 2006.

    The defendants, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Fadairo, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N100, 000 each, with two sureties each in like sum.

    Fadairo said that the sureties who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, should be gainfully employed and must  present evidence of tax payment to state government.

    He adjourned the case until June 20, for further hearing.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
