  • Move to recall me will fail, says Melaye

    NAN – H –44

    Melaye

    By Kola Adeyemi

Lokoja, June 11, 2017 ( NAN) Sen. Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi) has said that the ongoing move by the electorate in his constituency to recall him from the Senate will fail.

Melaye, who is representing the Kogi West Senatorial District in the Senate, made the statement in Kabba, Kogi, on Sunday when he addressed his supporters.

He said his achievements in the Senate were enormous and as such the people of the constituency were solidly behind him.

Melaye, who later led his supporters on a peaceful march round Kabba town, alleged that the state Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, was behind the move to recall him,

The electorate in the seven local government areas that make up Kogi West Senatorial District on Saturday besieged   polling units in the area to endorse the request for the recall of the senator.

They affixed the photocopy of their permanent voter cards to the recall form.

Melaye alleged that 30 supporters of his who refused to be part of the move were arrested on the order of the governor.

“Quote me, Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has released N200 million for each of the seven local government areas in my senatorial district to facilitate my recall from the Senate,” Melaye alleged.

In his reaction, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Petra Akinti-Onyegbule, described Melaye’s allegation as unfounded.

    Restoration
    By Kudirat Ogunyemi
Abuja, June 9, 2017 (NAN) Nigeria may officially export its first consignment of certified yams to the UK and U.S. by the end of June, Chief Audu Ogbeh, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development has disclosed.

The minister made this disclosure in a statement signed by Mr Olukayode Oyeleye, Special Media and Communication in the ministry in Abuja on Friday.

He said that the Federal Government was committed to restoring Nigeria’s place in agro-commodities export market, which had been lost for decades as a result of poor quality control.

According to Ogbeh, Nigeria would officially export its first consignment of certified yams to the UK and U.S. by the end of June.

‘‘This will mark a milestone in the efforts we are making to bring Nigeria back into reckoning in the agricultural export market.

‘‘We lost this, decades ago, as a result of poor quality control and subsequent rejection of our agricultural exports.

‘‘Among a number of initiatives to fast-track these interventions and solidify our base, the Federal Government has empowered the Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Services (NAQS), to make it more responsive to issues of safety and phytosanitary standards in food exports.

‘‘The NAQS reports will become acceptable globally and this will forestall the national embarrassment arising from the rejections of food exports on account of quality deficiency,’’ he said.

He said that the Federal Government had also established a standing inter-ministerial technical committee on zero-reject of agricultural commodities/produce and non-oil exports in Nigeria.

Ogbeh said that the committee is co-chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment and technically supported by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

He added that the committee consists of membership from critical and relevant agencies of the Federal Government.

These agencies are the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigerian Customs Service, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).

They include Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) are also part of the project.

He informed that the inter-ministerial committee had commenced work on an export control plan to target the country beans rejection and develop HS codes for other exportable commodities from Nigeria as recommended by the EU as part of the terms for lifting the ban on the beans export.

According to him, the Ministry of Agriculture plays a pivotal role since all productions start from the farms.

‘‘I affirm the commitment of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration to end the embarrassing rejection of Nigerian commodity and produce at the international market is irrevocable.

‘‘The health of Nigerians is also paramount and the populace needs good quality food as well.

‘‘There is nothing like Nigerian or local standards, but international standards to which we cannot but adhere in our local handling of food, consumption and export drive,’’ the minister said. (NAN)

    By Dapo Udom

Lagos, June 5, 2017 (NAN) Mr Chibueze Okereke, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON), has said that the organisation will honour late Chief MKO Abiola on June 12 at the new COSON House, Ikeja.

Okereke told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday that the honour would be in form of a lecture.

The title of the lecture will be: “June 12 and the Lessons of History.’’

He said that the Publisher of Ovation Magazine, Mr Dele Momodu, would deliver the lecture.

“Dele Momodu, who was a key figure in the June 12 Movement will give an historical account of that day.

“He will be speaking to a top selection of the media, artists, political and human rights activists and young people,’’ he said.

  • Administrator raises alarm over imminent collapse of Ajaokuta Steel Company

    NAN- H-19

    Steel

    By Kola Adeyemi

Lokoja, June 4, 2017 ( NAN) The Ajaokuta Steel Company Ltd. ( ASCOL) built at a cost $4.6 billion may eventually collapse unless the country quickly confronts foreign and local interests working against its completion.

The Sole Administrator of the company, Mr Joseph Onobere, disclosed this at the weekend while briefing a team of journalists at the company’s complex.

They were led by the President; Nigeria Union of Journalists ( NUJ), Alhaji Waheed Odusile, and the President of the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE), Mrs Funke Egbemode

The journalists were on tour of the steel complex as part of activities marking 2017 Democracy Day lecture organized by the Kogi State’s Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Onobere said that should the project collapse finally, Nigeria might never be in a position to build another one.

“Successive governments have been paying lip service to the project and, painfully, leave it the way they met it,” he said.

The Sole Administrator said that project had remained at the stage where it was abandoned by the Russians in 1994.

Onobere said that only $400 million was required to complete the project which the country had already spent $4.6 billion.

“The project is 98 per cent completed and the problem is not within Ajaokuta itself but external infrastructure.

“ Since 1994 when the plant was abandoned, nothing has been done,” he said.

As at 1994 when ASCOL was abandoned, Onobere explained that 40 units out of the 43 units of the integrated steel plant were 100 per cent completed.

“The main reason why the plant could not be inaugurated in 1994 was just the logistics that would be involved in the supply of imported raw materials, especially, the coking coal.

“ The rail bridge for the company was completed in 1983 by the Shehu Shagari-led administration, this ought to have been the costliest aspect of the plant.

“Between 1983 and today, not one metre has been added. After getting to that percentage of completion, the plant could not be inaugurated then because there was no way to bring the coking coal.

“That has been the main factor for 24 years and nothing has been done in that respect,” he said.

However, he said that the present administration had been taken steps to do something about the steel plant.

According to him, the gang up against the project has been so enormous but the luck Nigeria has is the type of dedicated and patriotic staff working in the company.

“ Otherwise, there would have been no place like Ajaokuta Steel Company anymore. All the steel plants are built on top of water because their water requirements are very much,’ he said.

He also described the equipment and other facilities at the plant as very durable but can deteriorate over time.

“So, in essence, for us to inaugurate this plant to produce liquid steel, the rail line must be inaugurated to service the plant.

` This has been the situation and up till now, the way forward has not been finalized,” he explained.

The Sole Administrator commended the journalists for seizing the initiative to visit the company, describing the action as patriotic.

He, however, appealed to them to be part of efforts to resuscitate the company, saying that journalists should be vigilant and guide against being used to kill the company.

The President of the NUJ, Mr Waheed Odusile, who responded on behalf of the team, described the state of things at the company as an embarrassment and an indictment of previous administrations.

He urged the present administration to write its name in gold by revamping the company which he said was critical to Nigeria’s quest for economic growth and self reliance.

Also on the tour are the Director -General, Kogi State Bureau of Information and Grassroots Development, the Chairman of the state council of the NUJ, Alhaji Adeiza Momoh Jimoh among others. ( NAN)

  • Thousands of farmers in Ondo State benefit from FADAMA project – Association

    NAN-AE-5
    Farmers
    By Kudirat Ogunyemi
Abuja, June 2, 2017 (NAN) Mr Boluwade Ogunbodede, Acting Chairman, Federated FADAMA Community Association (FFCA), Ondo State, says that thousands of farmers have benefited from the FADAMA project in the state.

Ogunbodede, who said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Friday, noted that the development had led to a significant increase in rice and cassava production.

He said that the grants were given to farmers in the last four years, adding that this had provoked an increase in the farmers’ agricultural production in all the 18 local government areas of the state.

He said that the production of rice had increased from 1.5 tonnes per hectare to 3.5 tonnes per hectare, while that of cassava had also increased from 12 to 18 tonnes per hectare.

Ogunbodede said that the achievement would not have been possible without the continuous support of the World Bank via the different intervention schemes of the FADAMA project in the state.

“This achievement has encouraged youths to start thinking of taking agriculture as a business in order to improve productivity and better their livelihood.

‘‘It may interest you to know that a lot of Nigerians are now consuming local rice, which our farmers are producing in large quantities.

“This has increased the standard of living of our farmers and created jobs for youths,’’ he said.

Ogunbodede commended the World Bank and FADAMA project for their landmark achievements across the state.

He, however, noted that the challenges facing the association included lack of access to credit facilities and non-availability of tractors that would enable farmers to till the land for crop growing.

He said that the efforts of the association to secure soft loans for its members to boost farming activities had not been easy to accomplish.

“We do not have enough tractors to achieve our production goals in the state.

“We have only 13 tractors in the state and most of them are in bad shape. It will take a lot of resources to put them into use again,’’ he added.

Also speaking, Mr Aminu Ringim, Jigawa Coordinator, FADAMA III project, said that the state cultivated about 300 hectares of rice farms during the last dry season farming.

He said that the FADAMA project was planning to redouble its rice production capacity in the state during the wet season farming.

“We just started FADAMA project in the state two years ago; we took off late but we have recorded a lot of success.

“We cultivated about 300 hectares of rice farms in the dry season farming.

‘‘For the rainy season, we are preparing to double our production; I can say confidently that over 5,000 farmers have benefited from the FADAMA programme in the state.

‘‘Women and youth agro-processors have benefited too; they were given rice milling machines, threshers, tricycles and other machines that would enhance their production,’’ Ringim said. (NAN)

    Scheme
By Kudirat Ogunyemi and Philomina Attah
Abuja, June 1, 2017 (NAN) Dr Adetunji Oredipe, ‎the World Bank Task Team Leader, says the Graduate Unemployment Youths Support Scheme (GUYSS) will enhance food production and create job opportunities in Nigeria.

Oredipe told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday that GUYSS was a new initiative of the World Bank-assisted FADAMA III Additional Financing (AF) programme.

He said that the World Bank, through FADAMA III AF programme, created GUYSS to empower more than 200 youths from various parts of the country via the creation of employment opportunities.

He said that the programme was conceptualised to engage the youths productively in different agricultural endeavours that would enhance their livelihoods.

“We are collaborating with the Federal Government to ensure the success of the programme.

“The programme is targeting job creation, building capacity of the youth and facilitating efforts to keep the foreign exchange rate of the nation’s currency low.

“We want to eliminate importation of rice and tomatoes in order to reduce the pressure on the naira and make the national economy strong‎,’’ he said.

Oredipe said that the programme would support all aspects of agricultural production as business ventures; right from crops to livestock production, inputs support and supply as well as advisory services.

He also said there would be extension services for the beneficiaries on post-harvest measures, including warehousing, marketing and products distribution.

The World Bank official said that the target beneficiaries of GUYSS would be secondary school certificate holders, undergraduates and graduates between the ages 18 and 35 years.

He pledged that the scheme would ensure transparency in the selection of beneficiaries.

Oredipe said that that the programme would start before July with a starter pack for the successful candidates.

NAN reports that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the World Bank’s FADAMA III AF Project, launched GUYSS in May.

The first phase of the scheme would cover 21 states and the FCT.

The states are Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Jigawa, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Sokoto and Taraba.

At the launch of the scheme, the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, said that GUYSS would facilitate the attainment of the goals of the Green Alternative Roadmap for the Federal Government’s Agriculture Promotion Policy (APP).

The minister said that the Green Alternative Roadmap recognised the key roles of smallholder farmers and large-scale farmers in maximising agricultural output and increasing efficiency in agricultural operations. (NAN)

  • Kogi APC Youth Leader accuses party leaders of `distracting’ Gov. Bello

    NAN-H-25

    Distraction

    Aledare Akinwale

Lokoja, June 1, 2017 (NAN)Mr Ohida Muhammed, APC Youth Leader in Kogi Central, has accused the party’s leaders of “distracting the governor with petty issues”.

“The APC leaders are making it difficult for the governor to do his work; they keep distracting him with very petty issues,” Muhammed told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lokoja.

He said that such distractions were unnecessary because the governor had not deviated from his resolve to serve the people.

According to him, “people, who are not relevant to the system, are the ones distracting Bello from focusing on the concerns of the poor”.

He accused unnamed national assembly members of “fabricating lies” against the governor, saying that such accusations were meant to make him lose focus.

“We have read some of these accusations and found that there is no truth in them. The Governor has done well in the area of health and agriculture and deserves an applause,” he said.

The youth leader rejected suggestions that the governor should be impeached over the double voter’s registration announced by INEC on Monday.

“The issue of double registration has been cleared by the electoral body. It said it had canceled one registration and therefore voided one card. That should settle it,” he said.

He urged the Kogi House of Assembly to ignore such calls.

Muhammed commended the governor for carrying out a successful staff verification exercise that had eliminated ghost names and reduced the workforce to a tolerable level, and urged Kogi residents to support government policies. (NAN)
