  • Army to offer free medical services to 500 Auchi indigents

    Auchi (Edo), June. 28, 2024 (NAN) The Nigerian Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (NASEME) says no fewer than 500 people will benefit from its free healthcare services.

    The Commandant, NASEME, Maj.-Gen. Oladele Arogundade, stated this on Friday during the flag-off of the Maiden Medical Outreach in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo.

    Arogundade said the free medical outreach affirmed the Chief of Army Staff’s commitment to improve civil military relations and to give back to its host community.

    According to him, the programme is aimed at promoting the well-being of indigent persons at the grassroots by granting them easier access to free and quality healthcare.

    “The free medical outreach exercise organised by NASEME is for the benefit of the good people of Auchi in particular, and the entire Etsako West Local Government Area.

    “The Nigerian Army understands the importance of good health as it is necessary for improved productivity in all spheres of live,” he said.

    Arogundade underscored the importance of health to the well being, saying that as physical security is important, health security is also important.

    “We have realised that in as much as physical security is important, which we do our best to provide, health security is equally important for all round well being and productivity.

    “A man that is not well cannot go to farm or market to do business,” he said.

    The commandant disclosed that the school would partner with the council and the hospital management of Irrua Specialist Hospital for future medical outreach.

    A medical consultant, Dr Sebastian Oiwho, said that the outreach to indigent people in key areas included general consultation, free eye examination, checking of high blood pressure, diabetes, malaria test as well as the distribution of free drugs.

    “During the exercise, medical volunteers will carry out diagnosis, treatment and medical procedures while drugs and other medical consumables will also be given to patients free of charge.”

    He said that the school would also focus on sensitising the people toward handling threats posed by deadly viral diseases to complement government efforts in preventing diseases.

    He urged communities to imbibe personal hygiene and environmental cleanliness as preventive measures against an outbreak.

    The Chairman of Etsako Local Government, Marvelous Zibiri, thanked NASEME for the gesture and urged people in the community to come out en mass to benefit from the free medical services.

    Don tasks Nigerians on water treatment to prevent waterborne diseases

    Iyamoh (Edo State), June 27, 2024 (NAN) A Don, Prof. Anthony Ugbenyen, has challenged
    Nigerians to always subject domestic water to treatment before use to prevent waterborne diseases.

    He made the call while delivering the 16th Inaugural Lecture at the Edo State University, Uzairue, on Thursday.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecture has “Biopolymers as Eco-friendly Alternative in Water/Wastewater Purification: A Public Health Concern” as its theme.

    Ugbenyen, a professor in the Department of Biochemistry, said “water is an important natural resources for the survival of living organisms, production of food and for other purposes.”

    He added that water is prone to different contamination and pollution that makes it difficult for use without treatment.

    “There is need to educate Nigerians on water treatment and disinfection process before use.

    “Subjecting water to treatment and disinfection will reduce the risk of heavy metal toxicities and waterborne diseases.”

    Ugbenyen added that water related diseases are common in the country and spread by pathogenic micro-organisms that transmit bacteria or viral infections into rivers, wells and rain water.

    He explained that “waters obtained from boreholes and rivers are considered unsafe for domestic consumption without proper treatment and disinfection in spite of good physicochemical properties.

    “The unsafe nature of such water is due to the level of heavy metals in it, which is higher than the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended limits.”

    He urged government to set up an evaluation body to see to the periodic check of natural water bodies, as well as prevent excessive human anthropogenic activities that may result to contamination of the water.

    He added that “there is need for sensitisation on proper waste management and the consequence of anthropogenic activities that may result to water contamination.”

    Earlier, the acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Dawood Egbefo, said the lecture is to

  • Old students donate 3 laboratories to alma mater

    Agbede (Edo), June 25, 2024 (NAN) The Ansar-Ud-Deen Momodu College Old Students’ Association (AMCOSA), Agbede, Etsako West Local Government Area (LGA) of Edo, has handed over three laboratories to the school.

    At Tuesday’s handing-over, the association’s president, Mr Kabiru Musa, said the laboratories, for Chemistry, Physic and Biology practicals, were all equipped with modern facilities.

    Musa added that N10 million was spent on building and equipping the laboratories, including the school’s perimeter fencing.

    “The association re-established the laboratories to meet the immediate and mandatory needs of the school against the exaggerated expectations of people.

    “We are one big family, united by the enormous love of our alma mater and the urgent need to rewrite the once glorious history.

    “The ultimate goal of salvaging the ailing fortunes of the school is the need that ought to justify the means,” Musa said.

    While commending all the members for their financial and spiritual support, Musa called for more.

    He disclosed that the school urgently needed water and toilets, including renovating two classroom blocks.

    He, however, frowned at the inability of the school’s authority to protect some of the association’s projects in the school.

    In his remarks, the Chairman of Etsako West LGA, Marvelous Zibiri, said setting up such significant projects revealed the old students valued their roots.

    “Your positive impact in making teaching and learning meaningful and purposeful will make the present students in the school work hard.

    “It will be an inspiration to the students to learn to be greater achievers because you can only give what you have,” Zibiri said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • ICAN tasks accountants on accountability

    Auchi (Edo), June 24, 2024 (NAN) The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has called on accountants in the country to be accountable and work within the ethics of their profession.

    ICAN President, Davidson Alaribe, made the call on Monday at the Investiture of the 9th Chairman and Inauguration of the Executive Committee, Auchi and District Society, Auchi, Edo.

    Alaribe, who was represented by the 1st Deputy Vice President, Hajia Queensley Seghosime, urged accountants to work with a sense of probity and honesty.

    He said as the custodian of liquid assets in any organisation, accountants must possess high level of integrity and responsibility to ensure that these assets are well managed.

    “My professional colleagues are called upon to uphold the tenets of the profession.

    “Our motto is integrity and accuracy and I want to plead with you to stand by that motto.’’

    He urged accountants not to, in any way compromise the work that they do as ICAN members.

    “You should not get involved in things that are unbecoming of a chartered accountant.’’

    The ICAN president congratulated the new chairman as well as other executive members and encouraged them to be good leaders.

    “We congratulate the incoming executive team of Auchi district society.

    “We encourage the new executive to continue to sustain the commitment of ICAN to advancing the accounting profession in Auchi and its environs,” he said.

    Alaribe said ICAN had a total of 71 district societies and eight chapters which include five international districts in the U.S., UK, Canada, Malaysia, Cameroon and 66 others spread across 36 states of Nigeria.

    He, however, urged the new executive to ensure that the Auchi district and the executive committee were well mobilised to attend the 54th annual accountants conference scheduled for October 2024.

    In his remarks, Mr Abu Oseni, the immediate past chairman of the district society appreciated members for their support during his tenure.

    He wished the new chairman well and prayed God to give him wisdom along with his team to make positive impacts in the society.

    The new chairman, ICAN, Auchi, Dr Samuel Oshiole, thanked the branch for considering him worthy to be elected as the 9th chairman of the district.

    “Our noble profession is practiced in towns and cities where our members largely find employment or practice.

    “The increasing number of chartered accountants who work and reside within Auchi and its environs necessitated the formation of the district.

    “It is my intention to do my best to build on the legacy established by my predecessors so that the ICAN brand noted for accuracy and integrity will excel in the comity of professional bodies.”

    He promised to commence the building of the district secretariat.

    “In my chairmanship year, effort will be made to commence the building of the district office.

    “As the district that controls the whole of Edo North, the need to have a befitting secretariat cannot be over emphasised,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Auchi (Edo), June. 19, 2024 (NAN) The Deputy Governorship Candidate of Labour Party (LP), Yusuf Kadiri, SAN, has called on the electorate to vote for the party come September 21.

    Kadiri said, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Auchi, Edo, on Wednesday that their votes count because the party’s mission was to bring governance closer to the people.

    We are on a mission to rescue Edo State and to restore hope to our people.

    “I urge Edo people to vote the Labour Party into office to uplift the qualities of lives of the people.

    “We have good intention for the people of Edo.

    ” We have seen the pain, the anguish, the frustration that our people are going through.

    “Too much of poverty in the land, too much of deception from those who are piloting the affairs of the state and we have told ourselves enough is enough.
