14 dies in auto crash in Kano

Kano, June 28, 2024(NAN) No fewer than 14 persons died in an auto-crash at Imawa town along the Zaria – Kano highway in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.

The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed the accident to newsmen on Friday in Kano.

He said that the accident occurred when a truck with registration number MKA 537 XN lost control and collided with pedestrians who had just concluded Friday prayers and killed 14 of them

Abdullahi said, “We received a distress call at about 01:50 p.m. on June 28, 2024, On receiving the information, we quickly dispatched our personnel and vehicle to the scene of the accident.

“The FRSC is committed to road safety and urges all road users to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent such avoidable tragedies.”

The sector commander extended  his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the  public that efforts were ongoing to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Kano, June 25, 2024 (NAN) Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) says it received 19 cases of various crimes perpetrated in Kano forests in May.

The Commander Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) Kano State Command, Abdullahi Al-ameen disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Kano.

According to him, out of the 19 complainants, 16 had been treated and done with, while three were pending.

“Most of the cases were on animal theft, child abuse, tricycle theft, kidnapping, phone snatching among others.

He said the service would do its best to leave up to its mandate, including prevention, detection of crimes and illegal activities perpetrated in the forests.

“We will continue to partner with relevant stakeholders on community policing,” he said.

He solicited the cooperation of the public to make the state a zero-free society. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Training

Kano, June 13, 2024 (NAN) The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Thursday, trained 25 journalists in Kano State in effective first aid treatment techniques.

Alhaji Musa Abdullahi, the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Kano branch, said at the opening of the training on Thursday that journalists should possess the skills to administer first aid treatments.

He said that as first line responders to emergency situations, journalists ought to be equipped to save lives.

“So this training will teach the participants how to administer first aid treatments effectively. I see the training as timely and well-intended.

“Emergencies happen almost every day. That is why it is necessary to assist and show compassion to the injured person.

“Wherever emergency happens, media people are usually the first to break the news, so having the skills to save life is very important,”  he said.

Also speaking, Aliyu Dawobe, ICRC’s Public Relations Officer, described the media as a cornerstone institution for public service and nation building.

He said that journalists are regularly exposed to accidents and emergency situations, saying: ” it is only critical to equip them with life-saving techniques”

Dawobe urged the media to support the activities of the Red Cross by indulging in more humanitarian services in support of the society.

He said that in 2023, the ICRC trained no fewer than 150 journalists across the northern region in first aiding.

“Our mandate is to assist and protect the dignity of people that are affected by armed conflicts, most especially in the North-East region.

“We support them with relief materials and other ways to improve their living conditions,” he said.

Mr Abba Salisu, a journalist from Radio Kano, who spoke on behalf of the participants, described the training as a good omen.

“It will enable us to support humanity, with this training, we are equipped to do our little parts to save lives while on duty,” he said.

Fire under control in School of Science, Tech in Kano – Fire Service

Kano, June 11, 2024(NAN) The Kano Fire Service has put out the fire in the Matan Fada,  School of Technology in Nassarawa Local Government Area of the state.

The Public Relations Officer of the service, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Kano.

Abdullahi said that the incident occurred on Monday night.

”We received a distress call at about 08:28 p.m., from Faisal Dauda that there was a fire incident at the School of Technology.

”Upon receiving the information, we quickly sent a fire vehicle to the scene at about 08:34 p.m., to bring the fire under control,’’ he said.

Abdullahi said that the building of 500 x 500ft dimension with nine classes and six offices, totaling 15 was completely razed down.

He also said that no life was lost and the cause of the fire is being investigated. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Complaints

Kano, June 6, 2024 (NAN) A Kano-Based NGO, Centre for Legal Orientation and Humanitarian Aid Initiative (CELOHA), says it received 121 complaints bothering on community disputes and human rights abuses in the state between January and May.

CELOHA’s Case Managing Officer, Alhaji Auwal Yunusa, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Kano.

Yunusa said that out of the total number of cases, the centre had already treated 110 while 11 were pending.

He further stated that 20 of the cases bothered on community disputes, 43 were about gender based violence while 22 of them centred on human trafficking.

“About 11 of the cases bothered on human rights violations, 15 on migration related issues, while 10 were on responsibility,” he said.

The CELOHA official said that the centre remained committed to upholding human rights and promoting access to justice.

“We provide legal assistance and support to individuals affected by human rights violations, we refer very complicated cases to the police and other agencies,” he said.

Yunusa urged members of the public to always exude tolerance and patience in the interest of cordiality and peaceful coexistence.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
