    Kano, June 11,2024( NAN) No fewer than 5,000 traders around Idi mosque area of Kano would lose their shops following quit notice served them by Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA).

    The chairman of the traders association, Yakubu Muhammad, said this on Tuesday during a news conference.

    KNUPDA had issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the traders at the mosque located on IBB Way in the Kano metropolis to vacate the area or face the wrath of the law.

    Muhammad recalled that the place was allocated to them over 18 years ago by the late Galadima of Kano, Alhaji Tijjani Hashim, through the Emirate Council.

    “The place was allocated to our members to check the various criminal activities such phone snatching and other immortal activities being perpetrated at the places’’, he said.

    He said previous administrations in the state had found it necessary to allow the traders to continue to operate in the area.

    “We are many here, mostly youths, how can you attempt to separate these guys from their businesses, you know this will portend danger for the state,” he said.

    Muhammad said traders did not understand why the government was sending packing even has they were law abiding and contributed to the state’s internally generated revenue.

    “We are still trying to come to terms with the exact offense we committed that prompted KNUPDA to chase us from where we run our lawful businesses to fend for our family.

    “We supported this government. We voted for it during the 2023 election. The best empowerment this government can give us is to allow us to continue with our businesses at the Masallacin Idi,” he said.

    He urged Governor Abba Yusuf to intervene and save their businesses from looming ruins.

    When contacted a source at the KNUPDA who pleaded anonymity confirmed that the agency has ordered the traders to vacate the place because they were illegally occupying the space.

    “KNUPDA feels that the traders did not seek permission from it before starting business there. That is why the authority issued the quit notice. They are illegally operating at the place.” said the source. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Kano, June 11,2024 ( NAN) Some residents of Kano metropolis have decried hike in prices of rams and other livestock as Muslim faithful prepare for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

    A  News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who visited some  markets in the metropolis, observed that there were many animals for sale but buyers were nowhere.

    At the Kofar Na’isa livestock market, a camel is sold for between N900, 000 and N1.7 million while a ram is sold for between N450, 000 and N810, 000.

    Malam Balarabe Abdulkadir, a livestock dealer attributed the low turnout of buyers to the current economic hardship in the country.

    “Residents are nowhere to be found and I haven’t sold anything yet. The livestock are too expensive and buyers are scarce,” he said.

    Alhaji Mohammad Ishayaku, a resident of Charanchi quarters, said that the high cost of livestock will prevent many residents from celebrating the sallah this year.

    ” I can’t afford N400,000 for a ram, so I’ll have to contribute money with my neighbours to buy one,”he said.

    Malam Bala Sani, another resident who visited the market, said that the prices were not affordable.

    “The hike in livestock prices is unbearable. Honestly, I can’t afford it. A medium-sized ram is selling for N340, 000,” he said.

    Malam Abubakar Hamisu, leader of the Goron Dutse livestock market, acknowledged the low patronage but remained hopeful sales will increase in the coming days.

    In spite of the abundance of livestock in the markets, sales have declined due to the high prices, causing concern among the dealers.

    Malam Balarabe Abdulkadir, another dealer in livestock said  that the low turnout of buyers might be due to economic hardship.

    Alhaji Mohammad Yakubu of Hotoro quarters, expressed fears that high prices of livestock would prevent residents from observing the sacrifice this year.

    Malam Sunusi Ahmed, who visited the market to purchase a ram for the Sallah, said the hike in prices was unbearable and he cannot afford it.

    He said that a medium sized ram goes for N340, 000.

    NAN reports that in spite of the abundance of livestock in the markets, patronage has been very poor due to the high prices, causing concern among livestock dealers. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Kano, June 11, 2024 (NAN) The Police Command in Kano State said that its community engagement strategy and preventive measures have reduced the level of criminal activities in the state.

    The Commissioner of Police, Mr Usaini Gumel, stated this at the Ungogo Local Government Area chapter Law Week held on Monday in Kano.

    “Our community engagement and preventive measures have not only reduced crime rates but also fostered a sense of security and trust among the populace.

    “Kano known worldwide for its political consciousness and proactivity provides an environment where policing efforts are always under public scrutiny, both locally and internationally.

    “Rather than seeing this situation as a hindrance, I viewed it as a catalyst for us to excel in our duties.

    “From the onset, I emphasised the importance of collective effort and community collaboration in promoting our policing activities,“he said.

    “Our strategy has been straightforward: engaging with the communities we serve, listening to their concerns, and working together to overcome emerging security challenges.

    Gumel  said the approach has enabled the police to effectively address socio-economic crime dynamics and create a safer environment for all residents of the state.

    He said that armed robbery, cell phone snatching, theft and sale of minors, inter and intra-communal thuggery and illicit drug dealings had reduced in the state.

    The commissioner said the  successes were  the result of a robust synergy with allied security agencies and the support of the larger community, including the state Government, traditional institutions, religious organisations and the NGOs.

    “A notable initiative under my watch has been the integration of repentant notorious youths back into the society. This non-kinetic approach has proven to be highly effective.

    “Over 718 influential youths have renounced their involvement in crime and surrendered their weapons.

    “I am aware that the State Government, under the leadership of Gov. Abba Yusuf, is currently working assiduously to support these individuals through scholarship and skills acquisition,” he said.

    He said 50 of the repentant youths had joined the Police Special Constabulary, and are presently assisting in crime prevention efforts in their respective local communities.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Abuja, June 9, 2024 (NAN) Shammah Makpa, the Secretary General of Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), says the Federation`s target is to develop and set a world stage record for athletes.

    Makpa disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the ongoing International Tennis Federation ( ITF ) World Tennis Tour Junior J30 in Abuja on Sunday.

    He said the competition is a component of the federation’s plan for long-term growth of athletes.

    “ It serves as a means of providing a stage on which young athletes showcase their abilities before we choose the best among them.

     

    “ The selected  ones in the future would take over from  the aging ones.

     

    “ Prospective players  that excel exceptionally during this tournament will be eligible to compete in future competitions,” he said.

     

    Mapka said that having the competition in Nigeria  have saved the federation from sourcing for money  to transport  players abroad.

     

    “ By holding the tournament here, we were  able to accommodate more than 30 to 60 Nigerian players that chose to participate in the competition.

     

    “ This kind of competition  can only accept a maximum of six players if it is held outside  Nigeris,” he said

     

    NAN reports that Junior International Tennis Federation ( ITF) event is a flagship tournament to help junior players gain global rankings and points.

    Kano, June 10,2024( NAN) Gov Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has accused the immediate past administration in Kano State of neglecting the education sector.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Yusuf spoke in Kano while declaring a State of Emergency in Education in Kano

    He alleged that the past administration sold some public schools and converted others to private shops.

    With the support of the National Union of Teachers (NUT), Gov. Yusuf has vowed to take bold and practical measures to revamp the education sector, recognizing that the quality of education shapes a society’s progress.

    He also expressed concern over the escalating problem of out-of-school children, with nearly a million youngsters currently denied access to educational opportunities.

    Gov. Yusuf said he is determined to restore the educational landscape, once a beacon of hope and a model to emulate, now overshadowed by neglect and decline.

    ”My administration is committed to making education a top priority and a lasting legacy for future generations.

    “Over 4.7 million pupils are forced to sit on bare floors to learn, while 400 schools have only one teacher for all classes and subjects,” he said.

    The governor said basic teaching tools were lacking, resources were inadequate, and teachers and students struggled with outdated equipment.

    “Teachers struggle with outdated and insufficient basic learning equipment, while clean water and sanitation are lacking in many schools,” he said.( NAN) ( www.nannews.ng)

    Kano, June 9, 2024 (NAN) Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has promised to reposition education in the state to make it deliver on expected targets.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Yusuf spoke in Kano while declaring a State of Emergency in Education on Saturday in Kano.
    He said it was unfortunate that the previous administration did not do much to provide a very conducive environment to teaching and learning in public schools in the state.
    Yusuf said such action left no fewer than 4.7 million students sitting on bare floors in primary schools across the state.
    The governor said there were deficiency of basic teaching tools, inadequate resources, and the struggles of teachers and students with outdated equipment.
    Yusuf said with the support of critical stakeholders such as National Union of Teachers his administration would achieve the delivery of quality education by its institutions.
    He said his administration would deploy enough resources to tackle the challenges of out of school children in the state.
    “My administration is committed to making education a top priority and a lasting legacy for future generations”, he said.

    Kano, June 9, 2024 (NAN) The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission says that it has commenced investigation into the alleged scam that characterised the recent disbursement of empowerment funds to street hawkers by governor Abba Yusuf.

    The Commission’s chairman, Muhuyi Rimin-Gado, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Kano that the commission was investing the matter to identify and bring those responsible to justice.

    “The commission is investigating the matter and anyone found involved would be brought to justice.

    “The commission is determined to prevent corruption from undermining the integrity of the empowerment initiative of the government and ensure that justice is served,” Rimin Gado’’, told NAN.

    The probe follows a viral video showing where some officials allegedly coerced beneficiaries into surrendering a significant portion of the N50, 000 grants each of them received during the disbursement ceremony.

    NAN reports that Yusuf had recently presented N50,000 each to 465 street hawkers to boost their businesses.

    However, in a 60-second video, one of the beneficiaries, Malam Nura Isa, alleged that he was coerced by officials to return N45, 000 from the N50,000 cash given to him.

    Isa alleged that he was part of about 100 beneficiaries cornered by officials, who demanded that they must comply “in their own interest.”

    It was also gathered that most of those shortlisted to benefit from the scheme were denied access to the venue of the event while their benefits were handed over to impostors. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Wudil (Kano State), June 9, 2024 (NAN) Alhaji Bashir Aliyu, Councillor representing Achika ward in Wudil Local Government Area of Kano State, has sponsored 120 out-of-school children to further studies.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Aliyu, while presenting the educational materials to the beneficiaries at Achika on Sunday, said the beneficiaries were orphans.

    He said the gesture was meant to improve their educational standard and secure their future.

    Bashir said the beneficiaries would be enrolled at the Government Junior Secondary School, Achika, and Government Arabic Junior Secondary School, Achika.

    He promised that the beneficiaries would be sponsored to study from junior secondary school level up to the senior level.

    “This will be continued even after I am no longer in office,” he said.

    The councillor said that the gesture was part of his contribution toward the development of the state.

    “I am focusing on empowering the vulnerable and the downtrodden,” he said.

    According to him, the initiative will secure the future of the children, especially orphans, who nowadays find it difficult to realise their educational dreams.

    Bashir said the beneficiaries included 65 girls and 54 boys, adding that about 50 of them were drop-outs.

    “I will continue to look after these children until they graduate from secondary school. Empowering children like these, all of them orphans, is a great service to humanity.

    “They need the society’s support in order to be good and productive members of the society. Abandoning them would be dangerous.

    “That is why I decided to sponsor their education from junior up to senior secondary school level even if I am no longer holding a political appointment,” he said.

    Items distributed to the beneficiaries included 1,200 exercise books, 120 school bags, 240 sets of uniform and 120 pairs of shoes.

    Others included 120 socks, 240 pens and 240 pieces of pencils.( NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Kano, June 8, 2024( NAN) The  Kano State Government says  it has employed 5,000 teachers into the state civil service to revitalise the education sector.
    Gov. Abba Yusuf stated this while declaring a state of emergency on  education on Saturday in Kano.
    He emphasised the need for quality  personnel to manage public schools in the state.
    Yusuf said the initiative is  aimed at providing the required manpower for  public schools in the state to provide quality education.
    The governor  said that the era of pupils receiving lectures under harsh conditions was  over.
    He  pledged to ensure a total rehabilitation and provision of furniture for public schools in the state.
    “The declaration of a state of emergency in education is a bold step towards addressing the challenges facing the sector.
    “The government’s commitment to providing basic learning materials and infrastructure will go a long way in improving the quality of education in the state,” he said.
    Yusuf said the  move was  to ensure that every child in the state  had access to a conducive learning environment.
    He used the opportunity to highlight the crisis facing the state’s education sector, painting a stark picture of a system in dire need of reform.

    Yusuf   alleged that the immediate past administration closed down schools while  those vandalised were converted to commercial premises.

    The governor accused the past administration of profiting from school lands over investing in education, leaving a legacy of neglect.
    He promised to tackle the multi-faceted problems facing public  education in the state head on.
    These, he said, include  the  shortage of qualified teachers, inadequate training programmes and socio-economic challenges faced by students.

    Kano, June 6,2024( NAN) Kano State Government has earmarked about  N11 billion on the constricting of  70 kilometer access roads  networks in semi-urban areas in different parts of the state.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov. Abba Yusuf, said this on Thursday in Kano during the inauguration of  road projects in Rijiyar Gwangwan and Mil Goma in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of  the state.

    He said the projects would be executed in partnership with Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and Lives & Livelihood Fund (LLF).

    This would be done through the Kano State Agro-pastoral Development Project(KSADP) under Kano State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KNARDA).

    He said his administration was determined to execute life-changing infrastructure for rural communities in the state.

    Yusuf said the state government would carefully monitor the execution of the projects to ensure strict adherence to contract specifications.

    He called on the host communities to cooperate with the contractors to ensure the successful completion of the projects.

    The governor is emphasising the importance of community cooperation to ensure the successful execution of the projects, which are expected to bring significant benefits to rural communities in the state. (NAN) ( www.nannews.ng)
