    Eid-el Kabir : Medical expert warns against excessive consumption of meat

    Bauchi, June 17, 2023 (NAN) Dr Sani Giade of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBTH), Bauchi, has advised Nigerians to avoid  excessive consumption of meat as it could increase the risk of gastroenteritis.

    Giade gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Bauchi.

    He said that eating excessive meat at celebrations can have negative impact on health, especially for those who tend to store meat for several months after the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. 

    “Each year, public and private healthcare facilities receive scores of cases of various stomach and other illnesses after Sallah  celebrations due to the high consumption of meat,” he added.

    According to him, excessive meat consumption is not advisable due to its potential link to hyperuricemia and arthritis. 

    He emphasised the importance of hygiene, proper processing, cleanliness of instruments, preservation methods, and moderation in the use of spices when preparing meat to avoid potential health issues. 

    “These precautions are aimed at maintaining good health and preventing diseases associated with meat consumption,” he said 

    Giade explained that inadequate hand washing, improper food handling, and lack of sanitation contribute significantly to the spread of diarrhea disease.

    “Diarrhea is often caused by infections from pathogens such as coli, Salmonella, and Norovirus, which can be transmitted through contaminated food, water, or surfaces, ” Giade said.

    The medical expert further advised the public not to consume meat from sick animals, warning that they might contain infectious diseases capable of causing serious health challenges.

    “Sick animals like ram, and cow could lead to disease spread including the transmission of zoonotic diseases such as beef tapeworm infections, bovine tuberculosis, and anthrax disease.

    “The Quran also warns against consumption of meat from sick animals, ” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Sallah: Bauchi CP tasks personnel on professionalism

    Bauchi, June 15, 2024 (NAN) Mr Auwal  Musa, the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State has urged personnel to display high sense of professionalism in the discharge of their duties during the Eid el-Adha celebration.

    Musa said this in a statement by the spokesman of the Command, SP Ahmed Wakil, on Friday in Bauchi.

    He charged the personnel to be courteous and assertive in carrying out their professional duties in the state, adding that the Command was collaborating with other security agencies to protect lives and properties during the festivities. 

    The Command, he said, deployed conventional and tactical teams as well as logistics to prayer grounds, event centres and other public places to facilitate peaceful celebrations in the state.

    “Strategic officers will reinforce visibility policing structure and conduct confidence-building patrols, particularly around residential areas, major highways, government and private infrastructure, to prevent and address any potential disruptions,” Musa was quoted as saying in the statement. 

    While emphasising the significance of maintaining peace, Musa warned that the command would not condone acts capable of disrupting relative peace in the state. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

    Bauchi, June 12, 2024 (NAN) The Community leaders of  Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area (LGA) of Bauchi, on Wednesday cautioned the community youth against indecent dressing to promote morality and uphold community values.

    Mr Dauda Ibrahim, Village head of Mingil Fada community, made this known in an interview with newsmen on the impact of indecent dressing on community values, in Bauchi.

    Ibrahim, who emphasised the growing concerns on the impact of indecent dressing on community values, added that the matter made the local community leaders to take proactive measures to address the issue.

    “By recognising the importance of upholding morality within the community, the leaders have embarked on campaigns to caution youth against engaging in indecent dressing practices,” he said.

    According to him, the community barred the youths from indulging in indecent dressing, as a way to give them a better future.

    “Our land will be peaceful and good, if youths dress decently.

    “Young men and women compete in the kind of clothes they put on because there is no difference between men and women wearing all clothes, believing all clothes are now unisex.

    “Some girls are wearing under size clothes, the clothes that are for their younger sisters, they wear and these always show their nakedness that lead to attraction, causing rape and crimes,” he said.

    Ibrahim, who advised the boys on proper haircut, urged them to shun drug abuse, which always leads to crime of stealing and fighting, among others.

    He also called on other communities to take a cue from them to reduce the level of Indecent dressing in their communities.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Eid el-Adha: Bauchi residents lament hike in ram prices

    Bauchi, June 9, 2024 (NAN) Some residents in Bauchi have expressed concern over hike in ram and sheep prices ahead of the Eid el-Adha celebration.

    Eid el-Adha or the “Fest of Sacrifice” is a significant holiday celebrated by Muslims to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) devotion to God.

    It is being observed on the 10th day of Dhul Hajj (the 12th month of the Islamic calendar).

    One of the central rituals on Eid el-Adha is the act of sacrificing a ram, sheep, goat or cow.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prices have skyrocketed by over 100 per cent in the past two weeks amid low demand of the animals.

    A NAN check at Kasuwan Shanu and railway livestock markets in Bauchi metripolis showed that traders were making lull businesses.

    A average ram was sold at N160,000 as against its old price of N80,000.

    A well bred bull was sold between N500,000 and N750,000 as against N250,000 and N450,000, it sold in the past weeks.

    Similarly, sheep and goat indicated similar increase in prices, as a medium size sheep sold for N100,00 and N45,000 as against N60,000 and N25,000, respectively.

    Mr Sani Ayuba, a resident, blamed traders for the unilateral hike in prices to exploit buyers.

    He said the traders jerked up the prices to make profit inview of the high demand of the animals for sacrifice during the festivities.

    Another resident, Ibrahim Usman, who bought a ram at N170,000, decried the exorbitant prices at the market.

    “I bought a ram at the Kasuwan Shanu at N170,000. This is much higher than the usual price.

    “Traders are taking advantage of the festive period to get more money from people needing the animals for sacrifice,” he said

    However, Musa Zanna, an animal dealer, attributed the hike in prices to high cost of transportation and animal feeds.

    He said that animal dealers spent much on transporting the animals from village markets to the state capital. 

    Zanna expressed optimism that prices would further drop in view of the increase in the supply of the animals. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Bauchi, June 6, 2024 (NAN) The Bauchi government has said that the ongoing demolition of illegal make shift structures would enhance security network in the state capital.

    Mr Abdulhamid Bununu, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs said this at a news conference on Thursday in Bauchi, 

    He said the exercise was prompted by credible intelligence on activities of criminal elements hibernating some of the structures on the road side and other strategic locations in the metropolis.

    “The government is not unaware of the consequences of such order on small business owners, but sees it as paramount to upheld the fabulous security enjoy by the state.

    “The security will rapidly increase while security operatives will work for the protection of peace without hindrances in the state,” he said. 

    Also speaking, Amina Katagum, the Commissioner for Land and Survey, said that Gov. Bala Mohammed had directed for the relocation of the affected businesses to a designated area to continue with their businesses. 

    “Where by each business owner will be allocated with a piece of land using a cluster system to enable them to continue with the bussinesses,” she said. 

    While soliciting support for government’s programmes, Katagum said the exercise would address security challenges in the state. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Minimum wage: Strike paralyses activities in Bauchi, Borno, Yobe

    Bauchi, May 3, 2024 (NAN) Workers in Bauchi, Borno and Yobe on Monday joined the nationwide strike embarked by the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

    The Correspondents of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who monitored the strike in Bauchi, Damaturu and Maiduguri report that government offices, schools and banks were closed in compliance with the industrial action.

    The unions directed their members to embarked on an indefinite strike following disagreement with the Federal Government over the implementation of the new minimum and down ward review of the electricity tariff.

    In Bauchi, workers had stayed from their offices at the Federal and State Government Secretariats, banks, schools and other public offices while the NLC officials were going round to enforce compliance with the strike.

    Mr Maikudi Ibrahim, Acting Chairman of the Congress, said the state chapter had fully complied with the strike.

    “We are monitoring departments and agencies to ensure total compliance with the strike. No going back, we are on it,” he said 

    Corroborating Ibrahim, Mr Ibrahim Tafida, the Vice Chairman of the TUC, described workers’ compliance to the strike as encouraging.

    “It is a success; all offices, organisations and agencies remained closed in compliance to the directives from the national secretariat”.

    However, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Yobe Stare Chapter, has dissociated itself from the ongoing strike by the labour unions.

    The Chairman of the association, Dr Abubakar Mala, said that they directed their members to continue providing medical services to the patients.

    “We are not joining the NLC strike. We are not part of their affiliate, and we are not joining the strike.

    “We are fully attending to patients as usual. All our clinics are open, and we have been in the theater and everywhere,” he said.

    The measure, he said, would facilitate uninterrupted medical and healthcare services to the people.

    Similarly, some residents of Maiduguri in Borno have urged the organised labour to show human face while enforcing the strike.

    Mr Ibrahim Musa, a resident, said that it was imperative for the unions not to disrupt provision of essential services to the people.

    He said that, “there should be power supply to hospitals and water plants to service the poor.

    “People on Band C who are placed on only four hours of power supply daily should also be allowed to enjoy it”.

    Commenting, Bulama Mustapha and Hadiza Ali called for government and the unions to resume negotiation to facilitate speedy resolution of the impasse.

    “There should be skeletal services in some areas. For instance, students of the University of Maiduguri are writing their examinations, and some candidates are writing WAEC. They should be allowed to continue.

    “The strike should bear a human face so that innocent Nigerians will not suffer,” Ali said.

    Also, an Islamic cleric, Usman Sadisu, expressed concern over the strike which might disrupt the transportation of pilgrims for Hajj exercise.

    “We hope the closure of the airports due to the strike will not affect the transportation of pilgrims in areas where the exercise has not been concluded.

    “The labour unions should be considerate to easy movement of intending pilgrims in any airport to be concluded”. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
