“The project of this Opebi link bridge is not something that is common; so, it is very good for our young engineers to have this experience.

“It is a massive project that will bring relief to residents of Lagos trying to connect the airport, Ojota, Ikorodu.”

Omotosho said that in spite of the rains, contractors were committed to meeting deadlines.

Squash: PSA ranked tournament helps elevate rankings, Falase says

    Squash

    By Aderonke Ojediran

Lagos, June 27, 2024 (NAN) Tomi Falase, Lagos State Squash Association (LSSA), said that the third edition of Prime Atlantic Squash Open would improve the world ranking of participating players.

Falase said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, on Friday.

PSA is the world governing body of squash saddled with the responsibility of ranking players based on their performance at PSA approved tournaments.

NAN reports that the third edition of the Prime Atlantic Senior and U-16 championships will serve-off at the Teslim Balogun Stadium from July 15 to July 20.

“Organising regular tournament is good for the players, but making it a PSA approved championship is the icing on the cake..

“What this will do is to improve the rankings of our players internationally; it will put them on the same pedestal to make their mark like their foreign counterparts.

“This third edition promises to be an exciting one. The players are in good form, I see some of them train. So, it’s going to be the battle of the fittest,” Falase said.

NAN reports that both male and female players will play in the senior and U-16 categories. Interested players are expected to register for the tournament online @nigeriasquashfed.com/event.

The Tournament Director, Wasiu Sanni, said equal prize money will be given to both men and women.

He further said that the essence of the tournament was to avail players the opportunity to be competitive.

” We believe that our female players put in as much work as their male counterparts, so the cash prize will be equal.

“Training without putting what you have learnt into practice is effort in futility, and we as the custodians of these players, need to observe them and know where they need improvement.

“I’m excited about what’s to come. Prime Atlantic has been a great partner in progress and I hope these players make the best of this opportunity,” he said.

NAN reports that Onaopemipo Adegoke had maintained dominance in the two previous editions while Rofiat Abdulazeez and Busayo Olatunji have taken turns to win.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Hajj: Lagos wants NAHCON address challenges ahead of 2025 pilgrimage

    Hajj

    By Aderonke Ojediran

Lagos, June 27, 2024 (NAN) Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr Ibrahim Layode, has called on the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to meet with stakeholders to find solutions to pilgrims’ challenges.

Layode made the call during a press conference  in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, according to a statement by an Assistant Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Welfare Pilgrims Board, Mr Taofeek Lawal.

The commissioner said that most of the challenges encountered during 2024 Hajj were from  inadequacies of the commission.

He said that the South West  was not pleased with food service at Mina as well as accommodation provided in Makkah.

“We had a lot of challenges, and most of them are from NAHCON.

“The caterer selected to provide meals for the state’s pilgrims was using his own discretion to select menu that was not favourable to the people of the South West.

“Pilgrims almost protested at Mina, and many of them rejected the meals served and chose to go and buy food from vendors.

“Even the accommodation provided for Lagos pilgrims in Makkah was not up to standards,” he said.

The official said that NAHCON admitted that there were challenges during the Hajj.

He, however, said that in spite of the challenges, ‘you can’t throw away the baby with the bath water’.

The commissioner  called on stakeholders to join hands with NAHCON to address the challenges  ahead of 2025 Hajj.

He thanked pilgrims from Lagos State for patience and praised  the state  Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu,  and his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, for huge support.

He said that the state government provided the shortfall of the Basic Travel Allowance to the pilgrims and offset the cost of rams, amongst other kind gestures.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 926 of 1,869 Muslim pilgrims from Lagos State  have so far returned from the 2024 Hajj. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

“Our government cannot do this alone and we still have a lot more to do. Community involvement is  very vital,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He called on education, religious and traditional institutions to enlighten their followers about safety measures especially during dry season and harmattan.

” Religious organisations, educational institutions, traditional institutions all have pivotal roles in knowledge sharing.

” Stop storing petrol in your shops. Don’t refill generator tanks when it is on. It will not only affect you. Everyone within that parameter has been endangered by you.

” We need more advocacy, we need to sentise residents of the state. These fire incidents are avoidable,” he said.

    By Aderonke Ojediran
Lagos, June 25, 2024 (NAN) Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Mr Gboyega Akosile, has described the governor as a leader who recognises the needs of the citizens in the state.

He made the statement at governor’s 59th birthday in Lagos on Tuesday.

“He recognises the importance of food security in the state and he initiated the widely acclaimed subsidised food market and the Ounje Eko food palliatives to cushion the effects of the economic downturn for the vulnerable people in the state,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that children with special needs were selected from Wesley School of deaf, Addo Inclusive Unit, Ayeteju Inclusive Unit and Army Children Inclusive Unit, among others, to felicitate the governor at the Lagos State House Ikeja.

“Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the 15th Governor of Lagos State is a good example of Godsend and a perfect description of God-does-not- make mistakes.

“Calm, humane, urbane, visionary and exemplary in many ways, governor Sanwo-Olu personifies character, giving credence to what we describe as Omoluabi (gentleman)in Yoruba.

“I remember one of his election slogans — when Lagos speaks, Sanwo-Olu listens — which attracted some criticism from naysayers who believed at the time that no leader would fulfill such a promise,” he said.

Akosile said that there were several other areas such as the environment, technology and tourism that had stood the governor out.

“I consider most of these as the real deal because they provide the basis for the future of Lagos and her residents.

“Lagos State has grown increasingly in global livability index, using some of the above factors as parameters.

“In Lagos, Sanwo-Olu has risen up to the challenge and has provided leadership,” he said.

    Water

    By Aderonke Ojediran

Lagos, June 25, 2024 (NAN) Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has solicited partnerships from  stakeholders in the public and private sectors in tackling water resource management challenges.

Sanwo-Olu made the appeal on Tuesday at the Fifth  Lagos International Water Conference in Lagos.

The conference had the theme: ” Financing Water and Sanitation for a Greater Lagos”.

The governor expressed dissatisfaction that  Lagos State Water Corporation had not been  innovative enough to create solutions to water resourcecmanagement challenges in the state in spite of international trainings of its staff.

“We have had several World Bank best trainers.

“They have been trained in best institutions but that has not put solutions on the table for us, that has not resolved the challenges that we have.

“Water, as Fela said, has no enemy, but it has got a lot of enemies because we are all not sincere or serious and true to ourselves.

“We all need to ask ourselves how well we are playing these roles. How well are we moving from lip service to being able to resolve the issues?” Sanwo-Olu asked.

Sanwo-Olu said that water remained important to the government and people of Lagos State.

“In the last five years, this administration has been dedicated to financing this conference with discussions as to how to straighten water resource management.

“Our focus includes regulating the water sector, promoting public/ private partnerships; we believe this will fill the gaps and foster operational efficiency of Lagos State Water Corporation.

“We want to move away from talk to action, we want to move to action.  It is the fifth year we are coming for the water conference. I want to see the outcomes and the outputs.

“We have increased our spending in this sector, we appreciate how Denmark and the Netherlands have collaborated with us.”

He said that if the state government had not been proactive, the recent outbreak of cholera  in the state would have become a pandemic.

The Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, also called for more public/private partnerships in order to find permanent solutions to water resource management problems.

” I am proud of Lagos and its strides.

“We need more collaborations between the private and public sectors, we need each other to find solutions,” he said.

    Agreement

    By Aderonke Ojediran

Lagos, June 18, 2024 (NAN) Lagos State Government has signed a concession agreement for Smart Health Information Platform (SHIP).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that SHIP was created to transform data transmission and management across all state-owned healthcare facilities.

It is aimed at creating a backbone for seamless movement of patients’ data and to enhance digital transformation in the state’s healthcare system.

It was designed by the state government in collaboration with eClat, a health technology company, and Interswitch Ltd.

The signing ceremony held at the Lagos House,  Marina, on Tuesday.

Digital Health Platform Ltd. — a special purpose vehicle  comprising Lagos State Ministry of Health, Interswitch and eClat  –  will drive SHIP operations.

Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu supervised the signing of the concession agreement between the state’s Office of Public Private Partnership and Digital Health Platform Ltd. ahead of the full deployment of SHIP in the state’s health sector.

Sanwo-Olu said at the event that SHIP was a transformational step in simplifying data collection and usage in the state’s health sector.

“We made a bold move in leveraging technology to enable efficient health delivery.

” This will enable proper allocation of resources and empower decision makers to analyse and evaluate the impact of interventions in the sector.

“We have seen  a global trend in using technology as a backbone to manage healthcare delivery and to assess changes in lifestyle of the population.

“We have seen the transformation technology has brought to banking, transportation and education,” the governor said.

He said that SHIP was a bold step of the government to transform healthcare and ease  cumbersome data processing in public  hospitals.

“This transition has taken us about two to three years of building a robust platform that will secure and protect patients’ data.

” During this journey, we were able to identify best partners that will deliver and help us realise our vision for the transformation of services in our hospitals.

“This is the beginning of full information technology reform in our healthcare system,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu assured the public of full protection of the database, adding that there would be  maintenance of privacy of the data collected through the platform.

“As the technology is being rolled out, I believe the state will see the benefits of the decision we are making today.

“We hope to see how this will strengthen and enhance access to healthcare, enable us to analyse the health needs of the people, and guide our interventions in the sector,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said that  general hospitals alone generated seven million contact data.

The commissioner said that managing the data required a robust digital infrastructure that would enable elimination of  repetitions and errors.

Abayomi said that SHIP would  empower the state government to plan and coordinate health services across all levels.

” We can use the data for policy formulation and use the data to apply resources to certain places.

“The platform is not only for the care of  patients, it is also for policymaking,” Abayomi said.

The Group Managing Director of Interswitch, Mr Mitchell Elegbe, said that SHIP would not only allow free flow of data from one health institution to another, but would also provide seamless payment options for patients.

He gave the assurance that the platform would not compromise patients’ data and other information stored in it.

“This partnership is something we won’t take with levity,” he said.

The agreement signing was also witnessed by the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Lawal Pedro.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

LASG wants pupils to maintain good hygiene as schools resume

    Hygiene

    By Aderonke Ojediran

Lagos, June 18, 2024 (NAN) Ahead of schools’ resumption from mid-term and Eid-el Kabir breaks, the Lagos State Government has called on public and private school administrators to ensure pupils’ hygiene in order to curb  cholera outbreak.

The state Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, made the call at a press briefing at the Lagos House, Marina.

” The children are resuming school, universities too are resuming; so, we are working very closely with our two commissioners in education, to  make sure that we sensitise  teachers and school clinics.

“When there is severe vomiting, it is crucial to start the first aid.

“We are still on high alert, we are not relaxing in anyway so that we protect our children.

” Don’t  collect treatments on streets, don’t go and take antibiotics, you may not need to, you may just need rehydration,” he said.

Abayomi disclosed that since the cholera outbreak in the state, not less than 15 persons had died  because they started treatment late.

“We lost not less than 15 persons within five days, which is sad. Most of those people were brought in dead or died soon after arrival because they left it too late,” he said.

According to the commissioner,   cholera is associated with diarrhoea and vomiting.

“When you have diarrhoea, you can revive yourself by drinking water, but with vomiting you dehydrate easily and the system shuts down.

” It is a contagious disease; so, the same principle applies: good sanitation and  use of water.

“Be sure of the water you are drinking and the source of food you are eating,” the commissioner said.

He also advised residents of the state to go to general hospitals and primary health centres to access free treatment, if they suspected the disease, to avoid more fatal cases.

” If you develop symptoms, come quickly so we can address it.

“Also, bear in mind that during a public health crisis, all treatment is provided free by the government. That is the only way we can bring people in quickly.

” We are still anticipating the problem because the bacteria is still in the community.

“It is either in the water or people are still recovering from cholera and they are potentially contagious,” he added.

Abayomi,  however, said that there had been progressive decline in the number of cases.

“The numbers have come down. We actually have not recorded any case of cholera since yesterday,” Abayomi said.

The professor said that there was need to nip it in the bud by collecting environmental samples.

“We are working with the ministry of environment and water resources by collecting environmental samples.

“The moment we picked up, through our surveillance, the increasing number of cases of severe gastroenteritis and vomiting, we realised that there was a sudden spike.

” On the 10th of June, we saw about 140 cases in Lagos Island, Lekki and Kosofe.

“We realised that something was happening. We activated what we call  emergency operation centre, which has multiple pillars, to investigate what was happening across the state,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
