Abuja, Sept. 29, 2017 (NAN) An author, Miss Chinwe Okoli, has called on students in the country to work hard toward earning better grades and become successful in life rather than relying on luck to get quick riches.
Okoli made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the launch of her two books in Abuja.
The two Books are: `A Daunting Odyssey’ and `The Ladder to Academic Excellence (A hand-on guide for Students and Entrepreneurs).’’
“I call on students to concentrate on their studies to genuinely make it in life instead of relying on luck, miracles, sports betting and other unholy ways to make quick money.
“Students in the Senior Secondary Schools and higher institutions of learning, these days, are distracted by things around them like social media, sports betting and other events that could make them derail.
“Most of them believe that with the high rate of unemployment, there is no point reading. They believe you can just go on stage and perform in musical concert and make serious money.
“They go with the trend of what they watch in movies and the social media.
By this, they shift from that traditional belief that through education, you can change your life, influence and develop your society.
“This belief has negatively contributed to the downward trend in our educational system with special regards to students’ performances.
On publishing, the first class graduate of Economics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka said the challenges were enormous, stressing that publishing books in the country was not easy.
Okoli explained that publishers in the country were not interested in the traditional type of publishing, adding,“they need you to raise the money and do most of the things involved.
“However, the essence of the two books is to instigate students’ consciousness to strive for academic excellence and know that when hard work is applied in the academics, success is assured’’. (NAN)
