Mutilation
By Grace Alegba
Lagos, Dec. 8, 2016 (NAN) A woman activist, Mrs Kehinde Adollo, has said that female genital mutilation cannot eliminate sexual promiscuity.
Adollo, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday, therefore, called for public and total condemnation of the practice, which she said, deprived the woman of what she was born with.
She added that “the primitive custom” would only alter the natural composition of the woman.

“I don’t agree with it, a baby was born whole; you should not deprive her of what she was born with.
“If it (clitoris) has its functions in cells in her body, we should not cut it short.
“I think it is unacceptable and society should speak more against it; I think you can educate your daughter from a young age, and talk to them about sex.
“Tell them the dos and the don’ts; I think it is just education, by you cutting off that urge, it doesn’t add up.
“You are causing a lot of pain because she would not feel like a woman; so I think proper education and sensitisation would go a long way.
“You don’t have to deprive a woman of what she was born with because you want to guard against something.
“I think it is wrong; talk to our young girls; let them know about sex from an early age; talk about abstinence from a young age.
“A lot of girls would imbibe if we can encourage them more, I think we would have the rates (promiscuity) reduced; but cutting it (clitoris) off would not help any further.
“I think education is key; right from the home, from the government, from the churches; let s talk about sex more’’.

Recent researches have indicated that a large percentage of prostitutes interviewed in brothels have had their female genital mutilated, stating that promiscuity among women is not definitely as a result of retention of the clitoris.(NAN)
