Abuja, March 13, 2018 (NAN) A don, Prof. Mabel Evwierhoma , has advised women to participate actively in the electoral process to ensure gender parity in the 2019 general elections.

Evwierhoma, who is the immediate past Dean of Faculty of Arts, University of Abuja, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

She expressed concern over the low turnout of women in previous elections, which she said had contributed to the lack of gender in Nigeria.

“2019, I believe strongly that women should come together, form coalitions for different purposes; in support of those who want elective post, those who want appointive post.

“Form active voices against discriminatory practices that hem-line women in politics.

“Women should come together, we should form different critical masses that will affirm our different stand points.”

According to her, when women speak with a loud voice, it will not only help encourage more women to participate in the electoral process, but will also promote the growth of Nigeria’s nascent democracy.

She further urged stakeholders in the advocacy for women empowerment to carry out sensitisation on the need for female participation in politics.

“There is no way that we can close the gap in gender disparity, unless there is increased participation of women in future elections,” Evwierhoma added. (NAN)
