Rehabilitation

Gombe, March 1, 2017 (NAN) The Gombe State Government has lauded the Federal Government’s rehabilitation and reconstruction of federal roads in the country.
Alhaji Abdullahi Umar, the Secretary, Gombe State Transport Service, gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Wednesday.

“The ongoing construction of federal roads is highly commendable in the sense that it will drastically reduce the rate of accidents in the country because from experience, the road is one of the key ingredients of the transport business.
“Once you don’t have good roads, your transport business will collapse because whenever your vehicle moves out it will come back with a mechanical problem.’’

Umar described the quality of the ongoing reconstruction of the Gombe-Yola road as a massive improvement on the initial road.

“Take for example, the ongoing project from Gombe to Yola road it has now reached an advanced stage, from Gombe up to Kumo, you are going to be comfortable, why because the road have been smoothened.
“If you look at the thickness of the road, if you measure it, it is not like the one that was done before.
“It is very thick and it has quality everybody that ply the road will tell you that yes the roads are ok.’’

Umar further urged the Federal Government to ensure that road projects were funded in line with budgetary provisions.
He appealed to contractors to maintain high standards in the execution of road projects by adhering to due process.
Similarly, Ibrahim Bala, Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers, described the quality of the Gombe, Yola road as a commendable improvement that would bring relief to motorists and other road users in the area.
He further urged government to also consider rehabilitating the Gombe-Maiduguri road.
Bala stated that once the road is completed, there will be massive reduction both in the spate of accidents and security challenges being faced by motorists on the road. (NAN)
