Yola, Aug. 17, 2017 (NAN) The Adamawa Government says it has stepped up support to hunters and vigilante groups in Madagali Local Government, in view of the rising spate of attacks in that area.
Its Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, told newsmen on Thursday in Yola that the measure was to boost their morale and empower them to tackle fleeing insurgents that were raiding villages.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that five attacks had been recorded in some rural settlements of the area in less than two weeks.
Scores were killed in the attacks that left many severely injured and assorted property destroyed.
Sajoh, who described the resurgence of attacks as “sad and unfortunate”, expressed government’s readiness to support civilian and military fighters to fish out the attackers and restore order to the villages.
He said that government was working closely with military authorities operating in the area to ensure adequate operational logistics.
“Government is also liaising with members of the National Assembly on the need to increase military presence in the rural areas of Madagali.
“Nothing will be taken for granted. Our job is to protect the poor and helpless masses and we shall not run away from that role,” he said.
He blamed the recent attacks on remnants of Boko Haram elements fleeing in various directions, after they were smoked out from hiding spots in Borno.
“The insurgents have been cut off from their main source of food supply and are raiding villages to loot food items,” he said. (NAN)
