Lagos, Dec. 24, 2018 (NAN) The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Yaba College of Technology Chapter, Lagos, on Monday honoured the Rector of the institution, Mr Obafemi Omokungbe and 15 others for their outstanding contributions to the union and the college.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that among the recipients were four retirees.

The union also presented N100, 000 cheque to each of the retirees.

Mr Nureni Yekini, Chairman of the union said that the awards and gifts to the awardees were to appreciate their services to the union.

Yekini said Omokungbe, a former chairman of ASUP, Yabatech, and two others were recognised for their steadfastness, consistency and doggedness to the union’s struggle.

He added that the officers, who were past leaders, had experienced victimisation.

According to him, Omokungbe later became the rector of the institution, a feat considered commendable.

He also presented an Ambassadorial Award to Dr Isaiah Oyeyinka, Rector, Gateway (ICT) Polytechnic, Saapade in Ogun, for transforming the institution in a short period.

“We need to thank God and appreciate Him for all he has done for us. We are celebrating our people; people who have laboured and contributed to our union and our great college.

“We are giving them this token to say thank you and appreciate them even as they retire,’’ the rector said.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, Omokungbe commended the union for the lofty initiative.

He said that any official who served the organisation meritoriously should be honoured by the management of the college.

The rector assured the union that the management would re-introduce the valedictory service and long service awards in 2019.

“Management will not fail in its duties as from 2019 to organise the awards.

“I don’t see why people will serve an organisation and not be celebrated.

“I want to thank the union for their initiative and donations. I want to thank them for their support and cooperation in the last nine months,’’ Omokungbe said. (NAN)
