Lafia, March 6, 2017. (NAN) Mr Arton Emmanuel, Outgoing President, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Staff Co-operative Society in Nasarawa State, has advised civil servants to join cooperative and thrift societies in preparation for their retirement.
Emmanuel made the appeal at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the society in Lafia on Monday.
According to him, “it will be of immense benefit if we can as well increase our contributions in order to have a reasonable savings in preparation for retirement, since people retire from service without being paid their entitlements as at and when due”.
He explained that to cushion the effect of untold hardship experienced by civil servants after retirement, there is the need for workers to join multipurpose societies in their various ministries, parastatals, agencies and institutions.
According to him, “saving in cooperative societies helps civil servants to plan for their retirement days.”
Emmanuel regretted that workers often retired from service without getting their entitlements promptly, exposing them to very serious problems.
He noted that joining such societies was beneficial, because one could withdraw all savings the very day of leaving service.
Emmanuel, however, expressed gratitude to the congress that it had made tremendous progress, in spite of the present economic recession, adding that the co-operative business in 2016 was impressive.
According to him, there has been increase in cumulative capital contributions, cumulative special disbursement as well as interest on conventional and emergency loans as compared to 2015.
Emmanuel said some of the challenges facing the society included irregular auditing, movement of deduction to Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and recovery of debts owed deceased members.
I am urging the new EXCO to find possible solutions in that regard.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that at the end of the meeting, members of the new executive members emerged.
The election saw the emergence of Mr Abimiku Namo as the new president, while Daniel Ngagiwa, and Jacob Unuwugu emerged as Vice President and Secretary.
Namo, in his post election remark, promised to sustain the legacy of the past council and called on members to support the new leadership to succeed. (NAN)
