Abuja, Jan. 27, 2017 (NAN) The FCT Handball Association says its main target now is to use secondary schools to popularise the sports at the grassroots in the territory.
Iyiola Ogundele, the Association’s Secretary, said on Thursday in Abuja that the focus on schools would be part of their programmes aimed at breeding future stars in the game.
“We are going to the schools. As part of our grassroots development programme, we are taking handball back to the schools.
“We want to popularise the game in schools with the view to discover some hidden talents,” he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Ogundele said handball and others sports had the potential to bring glory to Nigeria if they were funded the way football was being funded.
“Other sports should be given adequate attention and support.
“Every sport has the potential to bring this country glory and a very good image. We shouldn’t wait until football has a problem before we develop other sports, like handball.
“If 10 per cent of what is given to football is given to all other sports, sports will no longer be the same in the country.
“We have abundant talents in this country, but if the other sports are not developed the talented ones will not have avenues to express themselves.
“Therefore, government should support sports federations. That is the way forward,’’ he said.(NAN)
