Lagos, Feb. 1, 2018 (NAN) Mr Mohammed Fasasi, the President, Building and Construction Skilled Artisans Association of Nigeria (BACSAAN), on Thursday called for support of the Federal Government in the training of artisans in the industry.

Fasasi, who gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said there was need for occasional training of artisans to enhance their competencies.

He said the association had started a training programme for artisans, saying that the training would enhance capacity of local artisans to meet international standard.

He said that Nigerian artisans lacked adequate training to favourably compete with their international counterparts.

According to him, the association needs the support of government to enable it accomplish its mission on the training.

Fasasi said that the association lacked the financial capacity to make the training programme successful, adding that government could provide it’s support by providing training centres, equipment, vehicles, security and other requirements.

“The association is currently conducting ‘a Train and Retrain’ programme for artisans in the construction industry irrespective of area of specialisation.

“The training, which started in 2017, is aimed at improving competencies of Nigerian artisans.

“For now that the training has started, it is on annual basis, but as the programme progresses, it will develop to be quarterly or monthly training,” he said.

Fasasi said that the association would issue certificates to participants at the completion of the training.

The BACSAAN boss said the association was already partnering with the Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE) to ensure that the professional engineers engage services of certified artisans.

According to him, such arrangement will help to detect quacks in the industry.
