Minna, May 22, 2018 (NAN) The Niger State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution seeking to investigate the cause of all abandoned projects awarded by the present administration in the state.

The House passed the resolution following a motion moved by Mr Malik Bosso, member representing Bosso constituency.

Bosso decried the abandonment of the projects by contractors despite about 75 per cent of the contract sum being paid by government.

“The Government awarded various contracts for construction, reconstruction or rehabilitation of some roads and buildings across the state.

“And these contracts were awarded more than two years ago and all of them have yet to be completed.

“Even after payment of the 75 per cent of the contract sums to the contractors, most of them have since abandoned their sites,” he added

According to him, the non-completion of some of the projects is causing untold hardship on residents of the state.

“Another raining season is fast approaching and yet the contractors are feeling unconcerned.

“The non-completion of these projects, particularly the drainage, causes serious erosion thereby allowing water flowing into many houses.

“And the condition in which these roads are now is worse than they were even before the ongoing projects,” he said.

Also speaking, member representing Agwarra, Mr Bello Ahmad, cited the Bida-Minna road rehabilitation, where a substantial amount of the contract sum had been paid without commensurate work on ground.

Ahmad maintained that it was important to find out why projects having direct bearing on the populace had been abandoned in order to forestall future reoccurrence.

The Speaker of the House, Alhaji Ahmed Marafa, thereafter set up a special 7-man committee led by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Husseini Ibrahim, to investigate the causes of the abandoned projects in the state.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that the committee is expected to submit its report before the House on June 28. (NAN)
