Akwanga (Nasarawa State), Nov.3, 2017 (NAN) Mr. Daniel Oga Ogazi, the Chairman, House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, on Friday directed the management of College of Education, Akwanga, to sanction any student found vandalising school property.
Ogazi (APC-Kokona East) gave the directive during an inspection visit by the committee to the school.
He said that sanctioning erring students would not only serve as a deterrent to others but would also save cost usually incurred in maintaining facilities as well as help improve the standard of education in the state .
He commended the management of the school for keying into projects that have direct bearing on the lives of lecturers and their students.
“This inspection visit is part of the committee’s oversight function to enable the committee members see things by themselves, with a view to addressing any challenge discovered.
“We are all aware that Gov. Tanko Al-Makura had done his best and is still doing his best in the education sector and other sectors towards bettering the standard of living of our people and we, as assembly members, will continue to ensure that the right thing is done.”
The chairman said that the provost had done well by improving the standard of education in the institution.
He said that as a way of safeguarding the school’s property, the provost was being directed to sanction erring students to serve as a deterrent to others.

The committee chairman restated the assembly’s commitment to ensuring law and order in the state by enacting relevant laws.
Earlier, Dr. Rebecca Isaac, the Provost of the College, had said that since her assumption of duty in November 2013, she had been able to construct a standard convocation square for the school and built perimeter fencing around the school.
In addition, she had also renovated the Administrative block, staff offices and students lecture hall, among others.
She also commended Al-Makura for his efforts in developing the education sector in the state and urged the sustenance of such efforts.
However, she appealed to the committee to look into some of the challenges facing the school such as in inadequate overhead budget, payment of pension to retired staff, provision of boreholes.
Others are the provision of electricity in the newly constructed male and female hostels as well as vandalism of school property.
