Apprentice,19, bags 3 years for stabbing siblings with broken bottle

Akure, Feb.15, 2017 (NAN) An Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced a 19-year-old tailor- apprentice, Seun Ugoji, to three years imprisonment after pleading guilty to stabbing two siblings with a broken bottle.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Ayodeji Akinsanya, who handed down the verdict, however, gave the apprentice an option of N50, 000 fine.

The court found the accused guilty on the two-count charge of assault and grievous bodily harm and sentenced him to three years on each count which are to run concurrently.

Akinsanya said available records showed that the accused had earlier been convicted by the court for another offence.

“The accused is hereby sentenced to three years imprisonment on each count and the sentences are to run concurrently; an option of N50,000 fine is hereby granted.

“In the event of payment of the fine, the convict and his parents are to be on bond for the period of six months to be of good behaviour,” he said.

Earlier, the prosecutor, ASP Zakari Ibrahim told the court that the accused assaulted Oluwadare Akintomide and his sister, Oluwadare Olajumoke by stabbing them with broken bottle on the neck and stomach.

Zakari said both Seun and Akintomide were apprentices at No.109, Oke-Aro, Akure.

According to him, the accused committed the offences on  Nov. 25, 2016 at about 4.35 p.m. at No.109, Oke-Aro in Akure in contravention of Section 355 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ondo State 2006.

Counsel to the accused, Mr Oluwabunmi Olorunmoyo, urged the court to temper justice with mercy and be lenient with him. (NAN)
