Jos, July 17, 2017( NAN) A Jos Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama on Monday remanded in prison a 40-year-old businessman, Rabiu Sulieman, over alleged N3.6 million fraud.

The accused, who resides in Jos, is facing a charge of fraud.

The judge, Mr Yahaya Mohammed, who gave the order, said the accused should remain behind bars pending a bail application
by his lawyer.

Police Prosecutor Shuaibu Tambaya told the court that the case of fraud was reported at the “C” Division Police Station, Jos, by the complainant, Hafsat Mohammed, also of Jos on April 9.

He said the accused collected N3.6 million from the complainant under the guise of supplying her tricycles.

The offence, he noted, contravened the provisions of Section 419 of the Penal Code.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes a prison term of  three years for offenders on conviction.

The accused pleaded not guilty and his lawyer, Mr S.A. Abdul, urged the court to grant him bail, citing Section 36 (1) of the 1999 constitution that an accused person is innocent until proven guilty.

Abdul promised that the accused would not jump bail if granted.
