Dutse, Jan. 11, 2018 (NAN) The Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA) on Thursday said it had started comprehensive waste evacuation in Hadejia Local Government Area as part of efforts to keep the state clean.
Malam Adamu Umar, the acting Managing Director of the agency, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse that 230 tonnes of waste were evacuated and disposed of in a 10-day exercise in the council area.
He said the waste evacuation started on Dec. 27 and ended on Jan. 5.
Umar explained that the exercise was part of comprehensive waste and drain clearance operation, designed to enhance sanitation in rural communities in the state.
The official noted that the agency also sensitised the people on the need to keep the environment clean and promote good sanitation habits.
He said JISEPA would continue to protect the environment through effective waste management.
He added that “as environmental protection agency, we always advise people to take their waste to the appropriate and designated disposal centres.
“People must desist from indiscriminate dumping of waste in residential areas and waterways,” he cautioned. (NAN)
