Agency commends Maiadua LG for attaining Open Defecation Free status

Maiadua, (Katsina State) Aug. 10, 2017  (NAN) Mr Farouk Khan, the National Project Manager, National Office of Water Sanitation and Hygiene in Nigeria (SHAWN), has commended Maiadua Local Government of Katsina State for attaining Open Defecation Free status (ODF).

ODF is the termination of faecal-oral transmission, defined by no visible faeces found in the environment/village and every household and public/community institutions using safe technology option for disposal of faeces.

He gave the commendation on Thursday in Maiadua when he presented the open defecation free certificates to the 298 communities in the area.

Khan called on the certified communities to maintain the achieved status by being clean and hygienic always, assuring continuous support to them.

He said SHAWN, in collaboration with the state government, constructed 42 latrines across primary schools and established environmental health clubs in the schools, to promote healthy living among the students.

“We constructed 270 boreholes across the communities to ensure consumption of safe and clean water, ‘he said.

In his remarks, Alhaji Sani Sandamu, the Director, Water Sanitation and Hygiene in the area, commended the efforts of the state government, especially the rural water supply and sanitation agency (RWASA) for their regular support to the project.

He said his office would maintain the projects through constant supervision and monitoring.

The director Agency commends Maiadua LGA in Katsina for attaining defecation free status assured that the agency would not relent in its efforts to ensure improved quality on sanitation and hygiene.

Highlights of the event were the interactive session between officials of UNICEF, DFID and the communities committees on water sanitation and hygiene. (NAN)
