Abuja, July 5, 2017 (NAN) Air Force Comprehensive Secondary school, Port Harcourt, (AFCSSP) on Wednesday won the second edition of the Chief of Air Staff (CAS) 2017 inter-NAF secondary schools debate.
AFCSSP defeated Air Force Comprehensive Secondary school Ibadan (AFCSSI), having scored 266 points as against 246 points scored by AFCSSI.
The Chief of Air Staff, (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, said debates among schools were to aid language development and enhance particular subject areas of study.
The CAS said it was also aiding the team building process while affording participants the opportunity to make new friends from different schools and backgrounds.
Abubakar said the competition was worthwhile and had achieved the aim it was organised for.
“I must state that all of you are winners and deserved the gift presented to the winner.
“But, however, it is the very best between you that got the prize,” he said.
The CAS said the occasion afforded him the opportunity to reaffirm NAF’s commitment at improving the standard of education in NAF schools and by extension its host communities.
Abubakar said further that educating children, especially girls, had contributed significantly to the development of a stable, prosperous and healthy nation, whose citizens were active, productive and empowered.
“Data indicate that in Nigeria, over 5.5 million girls are out of school, nearly two-third of women in the North-West and North-East regions compared to other parts of the country.
“To enhance our national development, therefore, girls’ education should be one of our best investment, ” he said.
Abubakar said educated women were less likely to die during childbirth and more likely to have a healthy and well nourished children than their uneducated counterparts.
“A child born to a literate mother is more likely to survive past the age of five, and more likely to go to school.
“Therefore, girls’ education spurs exponential positive effects on social and economic development for generations to come,” he said.
The CAS said the difficulties suffered by girl-child, prompted NAF not to only established more NAF schools across the country, but had also established a special school in Abuja for girls , called Air Force Girls Comprehensive School (AFGCS).
Abubakar said further that competition of this nature would ensure quality education, rekindle the spirit of healthy competition among NAF secondary schools and build
confidence which would later translate into excellent performance. (NAN)
