Lafia, Sept. 29, 2017 (NAN) Nigeria Academy of Science (NAS) is partnering with the Nasarawa State Government to promote more youth-friendly programmes to address social vices in the state.
Prof. Ekanem Braide, the Nasarawa State Project Liason of NAS said this at a stakeholders meeting on Friday in Lafia.
According to her, youth friendly programmes will go a long way to addressing youth restiveness and unemployment in the State.
She said that the academy was formed to promote development of science and technology in the country, adding that it was currently partnering with the Ekiti and Nasarawa States toward promoting science and technology in the two states.
“The academy will continue to promote science and technology for nation building and intervene in areas that will better the lives of the youths who are very critical to the development of the country.
“NAS has also keyed into the issue of socio-economic development and reproductive health needs of the youths and want government to focus its attention to the welfare of the youths,” she said.
She said that it was better to prepare the youths for the future to curtail social vices rather than trying to “repair’’ them when the damage was already done.
Responding, Gov. Umaru Al-Makura represented by Ahmed Tijjani Commissioer for Education, said the government would reintroduce health clubs and societies in all public schools to educate the youths.
He promised to continually improve the welfare of students through the provision of infrastructure and scholarships to students. (NAN)
