Abuja, Jan. 24, 20117 (NAN) The Global Environmental Facility/Small Grant Programme (GEF/SGP) has spent 50,000 U.S dollars (about N15.3 million) to execute projects in Alore-Ijaiye community in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Mrs Ibironke Olubamise, National Coordinator, (GEF/SGP), made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday.
She said that the projects, which were executed in 2016, were monitored by some non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
She said that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) ensured that all the projects were duly implemented, adding that GEF/SGP was the largest funder of the projects.
Olubamise said that the GEF/SGP supported the execution of Moringa bio-gel project for the production of an alternative fuel for domestic use in Alore-Iyaiye community.
She said that a major thrust of the project was aimed at increasing raw materials for the production of Moringa bio-gel.
“GEF/SGP provided assistance for the building of production centre, where Moringa bio-gel will be produced and ensured the completion of the centre.
“We also provided support for the fabrication of a locally made machine to produce the Moringa gel,’’ she said.
Olubamise said that more than 250,000 Moringa seeds had been planted to increase raw materials for the gel factory and boost the production of ethanol from Moringa stems extract.
She also said that GEF/SGP, in collaboration with one NGO, had embarked on sensitisation of 120 members of the community to the use of Moringa bio-gel, its environmental and health benefits.
She said that a symposium was also organised for school pupils and community members on the same subject.
Olubamise said that members of the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technologists had inspected the Moringa bio-gel production centre and secured two rooms there for laboratory work on the fuel production.
She said that the GEF/SGP would carry out environmental projects in communities across the country, while supporting vulnerable persons in various communities. (NAN)
