Zaria (Kaduna State), Jan. 24, 2017 (NAN) An NGO, Zaria Education Development Association (ZEDA) on Tuesday said it had constructed a 100-seater capacity e-library at its secretariat in Zaria, Kaduna State.
Dr Isa Abbass, ZEDA Secretary-General made the disclosure at a press conference in Zaria on the forthcoming 24th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the association.
He said the e-library, to be inaugurated by Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’i of Kaduna State during the AGM, was to enhance reading culture among students and facilitate research works.
Abbas, who did not disclose the amount spent on the project, also said that the association is constructing a “Model Primary School” to cater for the educational needs of surrounding communities.
According to him, the school, which is almost completed, would set standard and ensure excellence.
The Secretary-General said during the AGM coming up on Friday, Jan. 27, Prof. Kabiru Mato of the University of Abuja would deliver a lecture entitled: “Education and Problem of Democratic Practice in Nigeria.”
He said that the event would be chaired by Prof. Andrew Nok, Kaduna State Commissioner for Education.
“Day II, Saturday, Jan. 28 is the actual AGM and commissioning of Muhammadu Inuwa Jibo Digital Centre by Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’i of Kaduna State, while Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo State is expected to be the Guest of Honour.
“Prof. Adamu Rasheed, the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC) will be the chairman of the occasion while His Excellency, Gov. El-Rufa’i is the Chief Host,” he said.
Abbas listed some achievements of the association to include the award of scholarship to indigent students, organising quiz and essay writing competitions among schools, offering JAMB clinic and vocational training among others.
“We are happy that we have started yielding positive results of our labour as some beneficiaries of ZEDA have started paying back.
“On issue of scholarship, we are restrategising to give some particular students full sponsorship to study specific courses instead of sharing huge amount to many students,” he noted.
The Secretary-General identified inadequate finances as one of the major constraints hindering the association’s zeal to fully accomplish its goals. (NAN)
