Refuse

Abuja, Jan. 23, 2017 (NAN) The Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) has started the clearing of refuse heaped on road medians along the Karu, Nyanya and Jikoyi in Abuja.
Mrs Oluwatoyin Olanipekun, Director, AEPB, told newsmen on Monday that the board was intervening in clearing the refuse on the instruction of the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello.
She, however, urged the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), whose duty it is to clear the refuse, to wake up to its responsibilities.
“This kind of ugly situation warranting such an intervention must be prevented in the future.
“AMAC has not woken to its responsibilities of promptly evacuating several tonnes of refuse being generated on daily basis, which has caught the attention of the FCT Administration.
“The intervention has become necessary to prevent any case of avoidable outbreak of epidemic.
“The instruction of the minister this morning is to make the entire place clean and decent and we must achieve this as soon as possible,’’ she said.
The director also advised the residents of the affected areas to assist the authorities by putting their wastes in waste bags and disposing them off properly.
“The waste bags will not only hasten the collection, but will also make the job neater for everybody,” she said. (NAN)
