Port Harcourt, Jan. 23, 2017 (NAN) Rivers state government is putting measures in place to ensure that commercial vehicles operating in the state underwent fitness tests.

The Commissioner of Transport, Mr Akie Fubara, made the announcement on Monday in Port Harcourt in a statement issued to newsmen.

He said that only commercial vehicles that scale through the compulsory fitness test would be allowed to operate in the state.

“Allowing unfit commercial vehicles to operate in the state is dangerous and can lead to accidents and other hazards.

“The ministry is already training Vehicle Inspection Officers on latest testing mechanism to determine the service value and fitness level of commercial vehicles.

“After the training, our team will be out to ensure enforcement so that the dangers associated with unfit vehicles for commercial purposes can be avoided,’’ the statement said.

It urged drivers of commercial drivers to comply with the rules by painting their vehicles with government approved colour for commercial vehicles.

“Commercial buses and taxis are to be painted in blue and white; this takes time and money so we will give a little time before we commence enforcement, ‘’ the statement said. (NAN)
