Birnin Kebbi, Jan. 20, 2017 (NAN) The Kebbi State Government says it will continue to cooperate with the Boundary Communities Development Agency in efforts to develop border communities in the state.
Gov. Atiku Bagudu gave the assurance in Birnin Kebbi on Friday when he received officials of the agency who were in the state on an assignment.
He commended the agency for executing development projects in the state’s border communities, pledging that his administration would continue to support such initiatives.
He, however, urged the agency to consult the state government on specific projects for guidance, particularly with regard to the location of the projects.
Bagudu acknowledged the cordial relationship existing between the people of the boarder communities and state government, saying that there had been no instance of friction or misunderstanding.
Earlier, Rep. Nasiru Zangon Daura, Chairman, Committee on Special Duties, the House of Representatives, appealed to the state government to construct access roads in the border communities.
He said that his committee was in the state, as part of its oversight functions to oversee projects executed by the agency and make observations and recommendations on them.
The lawmaker said that the projects would impact positively on the living standards of the residents of the communities.
He, however, urged the state government to provide adequate security in the area.
The Secretary of the agency, Mr Numoipire Wills, called on the state government to provide more social services in the border communities of the state.
He warned that if the government failed to pay adequate attention to the wellbeing of border communities, it could lead to some trespassing by neighbouring communities in other countries.
“We don’t want a repeat of the Bakassi episode,’’ he added. (NAN)
