Enugu, Jan. 20, 2017(NAN) The Enugu State Association of Deaf Persons has urged the government to integrate its members into the nation’s mainstream of the economy for them to contribute more to the national economic development.
The Patron of the association, Mr Uzor Chuba, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Friday.
“Government need to adopt and promote policies that will ensure full integration of the deaf persons into the mainstream of the economy of the society.
“With the policies in place, the deaf would be able to feel like normal persons and contribute their quota to the growth of the nation,” he said.
He said that integrating the deaf persons would also give them a true sense of belonging in the society.
Chuba said that the association would sensitise the Nigerians and government on the need for the deaf persons to have equal rights as every other Nigerian.
He advised government to come up with policies that would help to integrate the deaf persons into every sphere of government affairs, saying that the deaf had graduates who were also skilled in various spheres of human calling.
According to him, what every normal person does is what the deaf persons want to do.For example, if every normal person goes to school, they also want go to school.
“They are like every other person, just that their language is different during communication,’’ he said. (NAN)
