Lagos, Jan. 20, 2017(NAN) A 26-year-old bricklayer, Olamide Olanrewaju, who alleged stole a shop owner’s handbag on the pretext of shopping to buy assorted drinks valued at N50,000, was on Friday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Olanrewaju, who resides in Ojodu-Berger area on the outskirts of Lagos, is facing a charge of stealing.
The accused committed the offences on Jan. 11 at Shop 23, Corner Shop, Ogba in Ikeja, Prosecutor Clement Okuoimose told the court.
He said the accused entered the shop of the complainant, Mrs Damilola Ojo, that he wanted to buy some assorted drinks worth N50, 000.
“The accused started pointing at different kinds of drinks to the tune of N50, 000 and when the complainant turned to attend to other customers, the accused grabbed her handbag containing some valuables from the table and took to his heels.
“The complainant raised an alarm and he was given a hot chase and was caught when he wanted to scale the fence of a junior secondary school,” he told the court.
The offences contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section prescribes a three-year jail term for offenders.
The accused pleaded innocence of the offence.
The Magistrate, Mrs O.Y. Ekogbule, granted the accused bail in the sum of N40, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to Feb. 8 for mention. (NAN)
