Abuja, Jan. 19, 2017 (NAN) The Society for the Promotion of People`s Rights, an NGO, has advised the Federal Government to establish legal framework that will ensure efficient collection and disposal of waste in the country.

The President of the society, Mr Williams Osaze, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.

Osaze said that the call had become necessary in view of the inefficient waste management practice and its impact on the environment.

“It is important that government establish stringent legal and regulatory framework that will ensure efficient and appropriate collection and disposal of waste.

“This will ensure environmentally sound waste management system that prevents damage to the earth’s ecosystem and maintain high quality of life for the citizens.

“Also, government should pump sufficient funds into environmental agencies to enable them to appropriately dispose waste generated since hygiene and the health of the citizens are very essential.

“This is pivotal, because improper storage of waste can cause health, safety and economic problems, which are detrimental to human health.’’

The president also urged government to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to advance the sensitisation of the public on the impact
of climate change on the society.

He also urged for adequate funding to enable the relevant agencies tackle climate activities and other related environmental issues
effectively.

Osaze advised Nigerians to support government to strongly address environmental challenges which were partly responsible for many
terminal diseases in the society.

“The environment is, however, a complex and interactive system consisting of the atmosphere, land surface and bodies of water, as
well as living things.

“The degradation of an element of the environmental system will have positive or negative feedback effects on the others.

“So that is more reason, every citizen must support the government to ensure that we promote a healthy environment,’’ he said. (NAN)
