Certificate
By Mohammed Lawal
Zaria (Kaduna State), Jan. 18, 2017 (NAN) The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of Ameer Shehu Idris College of Advanced Studies, Zaria, Kaduna State, on Wednesday raised an alarm over the credibility of the college certificate.
The student leadership raised the issue in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the college premises, shortly before a meeting with the college management.
Abubakar Muhammad-Saddiq, the SRC President said: “We have some ongoing problems facing students of the college; whoever comes here was studying to gain admission into Ahmadu Bello University (ABU).
“Most of us assumed that Ameer Shehu Idrsis College of Advanced Studies is a short cut to ABU and that’s why we are here but to our greatest dismay, ABU no longer considers the certificate of the college and we don’t know why.
“Problem of affiliation with ABU has been a lingering for quite sometime now. So, we are here in the college without knowing our fate,” he said.
Also in an interview, Aminu Tukur, an Adviser to SRC and former President, decried the fact the management does not paste semester results to enable students to know their scores and grades.
“As I am talking to you, none of us can tell you his GPA; we are just studying, writing exams without knowing our scores.”
On her part, one of the parents, Hajiya Zulaihatu Isa, said that four of her children who had graduated from the college could not gain admission into ABU.
“I spent a lot of money to ensure that these children get education up to tertiary level and obtain the certificate to qualify them for university education but all efforts seem to be in vain.”
She appealed to Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’i of Kaduna State and the Emir of Zazzau to intervene to avoid a situation where the affected young students maight fall victim of social vices.
When contacted, the Acting Provost of the college, Dr Richard Ogunleye, said that there was no problem between the students and the management.
“I don’t think there is any difference between the management and the students.
“It is just a misconception of what they heard outside and that’s why we called for a meeting today; they need to be enlighten about the whole thing.
“On affiliation, ABU gave us an interim affiliation in 2006 and since then, they have been offering our students admission without any problem but this session there are little hitches.
“Actually, they came to the college to access facilities and we were made to understand that there is need for improved facilities but since then, they didn’t tell us anything, we are still waiting for a report from them,” he noted.
On the directive by the National Universities Commission (NUC) concealing all affiliations, Ogunleye gave assurance that the college had already sought ffiliation with National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
“The NBTE is coming here for accreditation of our courses because they are the only body with the mandate to give accreditation for diploma programmes to all, including universities.
“On issue of results, we have already overcome the problem; very soon their results will be pasted for everyone to know his/her grade,” he said. (NAN)
