Lagos, Jan. 13, 2017 (NAN) An environmentalist, Mr Desmond Majekodunmi, on Friday urged the federal and state governments to focus more on environmental protection in 2017.
Majekodunmi, who is also a board member of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
“Protecting the environment is fundamental to human existence.
“The environment is our life and support system as everything that concerns man revolves around it.
“The greens and trees give us the oxygen we breathe to remain alive; so, it is an act of wickedness, if we do not protect the environment,’’ the expert said.
Majekodunmi urged the Federal Ministry of Environment to intensify erosion control and remediation of the Niger Delta oil spillage sites.
He said that Nigeria’s greening project should be implemented with more enthusiasm.

The environmentalist urged that bills on animal protection, forest preservation and conservation should be on the front burner in 2017.
He urged that Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) should be taken more seriously by all tiers of government, adding that  concerns by stakeholders should addressed before mobilising contractors for any project.
He urged the three tiers of government to be determined to tackle environmental issues, warning that havoc caused by their neglect transcended religious, tribal and political boundaries. (NAN)
