Abuja, Jan 11, 2017 (NAN) The Minister of Communication, Mr Adebayo Shittu, has challenged the board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to ensure that subscribers get quality services from mobile network operators.

Shittu gave this charge while inaugurating the Board of NCC on Wednesday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the nine member board consist of six non-executive members, including the Chairman, Mr Durojaiye Olabiyi and each member representing each of the six geopolitical zones of the country.

The board also has three executive members which are the Executive Chairman/Chief Executive and two Executive Commissioners.

The minister said that complaints by Nigerians about the quality of services rendered by mobile network operators in the country had reached an alarming level.

He said that there had never been a year when the quality of service was a non-issue.

“This prompted me to read a riot act to all service providers during my meeting with them in 2016.

“I hereby challenge you to ensure that with the inauguration of the board, incidences of dropped calls and other related poor service quality will be curtailed.

“I urge you to swing into action to look at the issue of quality of service in its entire ramification and take practical measures that will lead to its improvement.

“I strongly believe that the challenge of poor quality of service in Nigeria’s telecoms industry is not insurmountable.

“There is a greater need for cooperation among stakeholders in resolving this problem,’’ he said.

Shittu told the members of the board that in carrying out the  national assignment, they should selflessly contribute their rich experiences to shape the development of the industry.

He said that the NCC Act (20030) was there to guide their work during the duration of their appointment.

He listed their duties to include the following: Formulating general policies for the regulation and development of the communications industry and ensuring the achievement of the objectives of commission.

He said their duties also include considering and approving the annual budget of the commission as may be presented by its management.

Responding on behalf of other members, the Chairman of the board appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for giving them the opportunity to serve the country.

He assured the minister that members would ensure a level playing ground for all stakeholders in the industry and to ensure better quality services by operators. (NAN)
