Sexagenarian car dealer faces N16.1m fraud charge

Lagos, Jan. 10, 2017(NAN) A car dealer, Emmanuel Ogbonna, was on Tuesday in Lagos arraigned for allegedly obtaining N16.1 million from different people on the pretext of selling a Toyota Hiace bus and cars to them.

Ogbonna, 63, was charged before an Ebute Meta chief Magistrates’ Court on a 20-count charge bordering on conspiracy stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Olajuwon, granted him a bail of N2 million with two sureties in like sum, who must be gainfully employed in a reputable organisation and show proof of tax payment to the state government.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Julius Babatope had told the court that the offences were committed between Feb. 1 and May 30, 2016 at No. 4, Samuel St., Ogudu.

He said the accused along with two others who have been previously arraigned had fraudulently obtained the sum of N16.1 million from various people at various times and also issued a dud cheque.

“The accused had approached the complainants and had offered to help them purchase cars of their choice, but after collecting huge sums from them he absconded.”

Babatope listed the people who were duped as Benedict Olomo, Samuel Abiodun, Bankole Adekoya, Olalekan Jimoh, Musiliu Olaniyi, Adewole Adesodun.

Others are Alimi Ojo, Mufutau Ojo and Prince Dele Olanrewaju.

The offences contravened Sections 285, 312, 319 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Further hearing in the case has been adjourned to Jan. 25 and Jan. 26.(NAN)
